Andromeda's Parachute: A Bright Quadruply Lensed Quasar at z=2.377
We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager spectroscopy of the four putative images of
the lensed quasar candidate J014709+463037 recently discovered by Berghea et
al. (2017). The data verify the source as a quadruply lensed, broad
absorption-line quasar having z_S = 2.377 +/- 0.007. We detect intervening
absorption in the FeII 2586, 2600, MgII 2796, 2803, and/or CIV 1548, 1550
transitions in eight foreground systems, three of which have redshifts
consistent with the photometric-redshift estimate reported for the lensing
galaxy (z_L ~ 0.57). By virtue of their positions on the sky, the source images
probe these absorbers over transverse physical scales of ~0.3-21 kpc,
permitting assessment of the variation in metal-line equivalent width W_r as a
function of sight-line separation. We measure differences in W_r,2796 of <40%
across all sight-line pairs subtending 7-21 kpc, suggestive of a high degree of
spatial coherence for MgII-absorbing material. W_r,2600 is observed to vary by
>50% over the same scales across the majority of sight-line pairs, while CIV
absorption exhibits a wide range in W_r,1548 differences of ~5-80% within
transverse distances less than ~3 kpc. J014709+463037 is one of only a handful
of z > 2 quadruply lensed systems for which all four source images are very
bright (r = 15.4-17.7 mag) and are easily separated in ground-based seeing
conditions. As such, it is an ideal candidate for higher-resolution
spectroscopy probing the spatial variation in the kinematic structure and

Low-ionization Line Emission from Starburst Galaxies: A New Probe of Galactic-Scale Outflows
We study the kinematically narrow, low-ionization line emission from a
bright, starburst galaxy at z = 0.69 using slit spectroscopy obtained with
Keck/LRIS. The spectrum reveals strong absorption in MgII and FeII resonance
transitions with Doppler shifts of -200 to -300 km/s, indicating a cool gas
outflow. Emission in MgII near and redward of systemic velocity, in concert
with the observed absorption, yields a P Cygni-like line profile similar to
those observed in the Ly alpha transition in Lyman Break Galaxies. Further, the
MgII emission is spatially resolved, and extends significantly beyond the
emission from stars and HII regions within the galaxy. Assuming the emission
has a simple, symmetric surface brightness profile, we find that the gas
extends to distances > ~7 kpc. We also detect several narrow FeII*
fine-structure lines in emission near the systemic velocity, arising from
energy levels which are radiatively excited directly from the ground state. We
suggest that the MgII and FeII* emission is generated by photon scattering in
the observed outflow, and emphasize that this emission is a generic prediction
of outflows. These observations provide the first direct constraints on the
minimum spatial extent and morphology of the wind from a distant galaxy.
Estimates of these parameters are crucial for understanding the impact of

Mining Primary Care Electronic Health Records for Automatic Disease Phenotyping: A Transparent Machine Learning Framework
(1) Background: We aimed to develop a transparent machine-learning (ML) framework to automatically identify patients with a condition from electronic health records (EHRs) via a parsimonious set of features. (2) Methods: We linked multiple sources of EHRs, including 917,496,869 primary care records and 40,656,805 secondary care records and 694,954 records from specialist surgeries between 2002 and 2012, to generate a unique dataset. Then, we treated patient identification as a problem of text classification and proposed a transparent disease-phenotyping framework. This framework comprises a generation of patient representation, feature selection, and optimal phenotyping algorithm development to tackle the imbalanced nature of the data. This framework was extensively evaluated by identifying rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). (3) Results: Being applied to the linked dataset of 9657 patients with 1484 cases of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 204 cases of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), this framework achieved accuracy and positive predictive values of 86.19% and 88.46%, respectively, for RA and 99.23% and 97.75% for AS, comparable with expert knowledge-driven methods. (4) Conclusions: This framework could potentially be used as an efficient tool for identifying patients with a condition of interest from EHRs, helping clinicians in clinical decision-support process

Chickspress: a resource for chicken gene expression
High-throughput sequencing and proteomics technologies are markedly increasing the amount of RNA and peptide data that are available to researchers, which are typically made publicly available via data repositories such as the NCBI Sequence Read Archive and proteome archives, respectively. These data sets contain valuable information about when and where gene products are expressed, but this information is not readily obtainable from archived data sets. Here we report Chickspress (http://geneatlas.arl.arizona.edu), the first publicly available gene expression resource for chicken tissues. Since there is no single source of chicken gene models, Chickspress incorporates both NCBI and Ensembl gene models and links these gene sets with experimental gene expression data and QTL information. By linking gene models from both NCBI and Ensembl gene prediction pipelines, researchers can, for the first time, easily compare gene models from each of these prediction workflows to available experimental data for these products. We use Chickspress data to show the differences between these gene annotation pipelines. Chickspress also provides rapid search, visualization and download capacity for chicken gene sets based upon tissue type, developmental stage and experiment type. This first Chickspress release contains 161 gene expression data sets, including expression of mRNAs, miRNAs, proteins and peptides. Educating novice practitioners to detect elder financial abuse: A randomised controlled trial

An evidence-based educational intervention was developed to advance practitioners’ decision-making in this domain. The objective was to test the effectiveness of a decision-training educational intervention on novices’ ability to detect elder financial abuse. The research was funded by an E.S.R.C. grant reference RES-189-25-0334.
Methods - A parallel-group, randomised controlled trial was conducted using a judgement analysis approach. Each participant used the World Wide Web to judge case sets at pre-test and post-test. The intervention group was provided with training after pre-test testing, whereas the control group were purely given instructions to continue with the task. 154 pre-registration health and social care practitioners were randomly allocated to intervention (n78) or control (n76). The intervention comprised of written and graphical descriptions of an expert consensus standard explaining how case information should be used to identify elder financial abuse. Participants’ ratings of certainty of abuse occurring (detection) were correlated with the experts’ ratings of the same cases at both stages of testing.
Results - At pre-test, no differences were found between control and intervention on rating capacity. Comparison of mean scores for the control and intervention group at pre-test compared to immediate post-test, showed a statistically significant result. The intervention was shown to have had a positive moderate effect; at immediate post-test, the intervention group’s ratings had become more similar to those of the experts, whereas the control’s capacity did not improve. The results of this study indicate that the decision-training intervention had a positive effect on detection ability.
Conclusions - This freely available, web-based decision-training aid is an effective evidence-based educational resource. Health and social care professionals can use the resource to enhance their ability to detect elder financial abuse. It has been embedded in a web resource at http://www.elderfinancialabuse.co.uk.ESR
