Accelerator performance analysis of the Fermilab Muon Campus
Fermilab is dedicated to hosting world-class experiments in search of new
physics that will operate in the coming years. The Muon g-2 Experiment is one
such experiment that will determine with unprecedented precision the muon
anomalous magnetic moment, which offers an important test of the Standard
Model. We describe in this study the accelerator facility that will deliver a
muon beam to this experiment. We first present the lattice design that allows
for efficient capture, transport, and delivery of polarized muon beams. We then
numerically examine its performance by simulating pion production in the
target, muon collection by the downstream beam line optics, as well as
transport of muon polarization. We finally establish the conditions required
for the safe removal of unwanted secondary particles that minimizes
contamination of the final beam.Comment: 10 p
Novel instructionless eye tracking tasks identify emotion recognition deficits in frontotemporal dementia
BACKGROUND: Current tasks measuring social cognition are usually 'pen and paper' tasks, have ceiling effects and include complicated test instructions that may be difficult to understand for those with cognitive impairment. We therefore aimed to develop a set of simple, instructionless, quantitative, tasks of emotion recognition using the methodology of eye tracking, with the subsequent aim of assessing their utility in individuals with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). METHODS: Using the Eyelink 1000 Plus eye tracker, 18 bvFTD and 22 controls completed tasks of simple and complex emotion recognition that involved viewing four images (one target face (simple) or pair of eyes (complex) and the others non-target) followed by a target emotion word and lastly the original four images alongside the emotion word. A dwell time change score was then calculated as the main outcome measure by subtracting the percentage dwell time for the target image before the emotion word appeared away from the percentage dwell time for the target image after the emotion word appeared. All participants also underwent a standard cognitive battery and volumetric T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Analysis using a mixed effects model showed that the average (standard deviation) mean dwell time change score in the target interest area was 35 (27)% for the control group compared with only 4 (18)% for the bvFTD group (p < 0.05) for the simple emotion recognition task, and 15 (26)% for the control group compared with only 2 (18)% for the bvFTD group (p < 0.05) for the complex emotion recognition task. Worse performance in the bvFTD group correlated with atrophy in the right ventromedial prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices, brain regions previously implicated in social cognition. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, eye tracking is a viable tool for assessing social cognition in individuals with bvFTD, being well-tolerated and able to overcome some of the problems associated with standard psychometric tasks
Zeroing in on more photons and gluons
We discuss radiation zeros that are found in gauge tree amplitudes for
processes involving multi-photon emission. Previous results are clarified by
examples and by further elaboration. The conditions under which such amplitude
zeros occur are identical in form to those for the single-photon zeros, and all
radiated photons must travel parallel to each other. Any other neutral particle
likewise must be massless (e.g. gluon) and travel in that common direction. The
relevance to questions like gluon jet identification and computational checks
is considered. We use examples to show how certain multi-photon amplitudes
evade the zeros, and to demonstrate the connection to a more general result,
the decoupling of an external electromagnetic plane wave in the ``null zone".

Robotic milking technologies and renegotiating situated ethical relationships on UK dairy farms
Robotic or automatic milking systems (AMS) are novel technologies that take over the labor of dairy farming and reduce the need for human-animal interactions. Because robotic milking involves the replacement of 'conventional' twice-a-day milking managed by people with a system that supposedly allows cows the freedom to be milked automatically whenever they choose, some claim robotic milking has health and welfare benefits for cows, increases productivity, and has lifestyle advantages for dairy farmers. This paper examines how established ethical relations on dairy farms are unsettled by the intervention of a radically different technology such as AMS. The renegotiation of ethical relationships is thus an important dimension of how the actors involved are re-assembled around a new technology. The paper draws on in-depth research on UK dairy farms comparing those using conventional milking technologies with those using AMS. We explore the situated ethical relations that are negotiated in practice, focusing on the contingent and complex nature of human-animal-technology interactions. We show that ethical relations are situated and emergent, and that as the identities, roles, and subjectivities of humans and animals are unsettled through the intervention of a new technology, the ethical relations also shift. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht
The Lore of Low Methane Livestock:Co-Producing Technology and Animals for Reduced Climate Change Impact
Methane emissions from sheep and cattle production have gained increasing profile in the context of climate change. Policy and scientific research communities have suggested a number of technological approaches to mitigate these emissions. This paper uses the concept of co-production as an analytical framework to understand farmers’ evaluation of a 'good animal’. It examines how technology and sheep and beef cattle are co-produced in the context of concerns about the climate change impact of methane. Drawing on 42 semi-structured interviews, this paper demonstrates that methane emissions are viewed as a natural and integral part of sheep and beef cattle by farmers, rather than as a pollutant. Sheep and beef cattle farmers in the UK are found to be an extremely heterogeneous group that need to be understood in their specific social, environmental and consumer contexts. Some are more amenable to appropriating methane reducing measures than others, but largely because animals are already co-constructed from the natural and the technical for reasons of increased production efficiency
