CVD of CrO2 Thin Films: Influence of the Deposition Parameters on their Structural and Magnetic Properties
This work reports on the synthesis of CrO2 thin films by atmospheric pressure
CVD using chromium trioxide (CrO3) and oxygen. Highly oriented (100) CrO2 films
containing highly oriented (0001) Cr2O3 were grown onto Al2O3(0001) substrates.
Films display a sharp magnetic transition at 375 K and a saturation
magnetization of 1.92 Bohr magnetons per f.u., close to the bulk value of 2
Bohr magnetons per f.u. for the CrO2.

A deficiência de factor XI é uma doença hematológica rara na população em geral.
Pode manifestar-se apenas como complicação hemorrágica no doente submetido a cirurgia electiva. Os autores descrevem o caso clínico de uma mulher de 59 anos, que
apresenta um quadro de hemorragia vaginal abundante 10 dias após ter sido submetida
a histerectomia vaginal com McCall, plastia anterior e posterior. Salientam a importância
da avaliação analítica pré-operatória, em especial o estudo da coagulação, e descrevem
a abordagem e o tratamento da deficiência de factor XI
Obliterative Surgery for Pelvic Organ Prolapse - an Option that Remains Valid?
Objective: To investigate the results of vaginal obliterate surgery in elderly women with pelvic organ prolapse.
Design: observational retrospective study.
Material and Methods: a total of 69 women with the diagnosis of pelvic prolapse were submitted to obliterative surgery in the urogynecology unit of a tertiary care hospital centre over the course of 8 years (2001 to 2008). The following data were collected from their clinical records: age, number of vaginal births, body mass index (BMI), hormone therapy, other existing diseases, type of prolapse and stage, anaesthetic risk score, duration of surgery, length of hospital stay, and short-term complications.
Results: Of the 69 women studied, 31 were submitted to colpocleisis and the remaining 38 were managed by the LeFort technique. Mean age was 74.8 years with a standard deviation (sd) of 7.14 years. Average BMI was 26.2 (sd =3.76). Vaginal births were recorded in all patients. Only three patients were taking hormone therapy at the time of surgery. Sixty-three women were classified as having and anesthetic risk of II or III and 55 underwent local-regional anesthesia. Complications were reported in five cases, four of which in the first days after surgery. Nearly all were mild and resolved within the first 6 weeks.
Conclusion: Complication rates appear to be low after obliterative surgery for pelvic organ prolapse in elderly women
Photoluminescence Stokes shift and exciton fine structure in CdTe nanocrystals
The photoluminescence spectra of spherical CdTe nanocrystals with zincblende
structure are studied by size-selective spectroscopic techniques. We observe a
resonant Stokes shift of 15 meV when the excitation laser energy is tuned to
the red side of the absorption band at 2.236 eV. The experimental data are
analyzed within a symmetry-based tight-binding theory of the exciton spectrum,
which is first shown to account for the size dependence of the fundamental gap
reported previously in the literature. The theoretical Stokes shift presented
as a function of the gap shows a good agreement with the experimental data,
indicating that the measured Stokes shift indeed arises from the electron-hole

CVD of CrO2: towards a lower temperature deposition process
We report on the synthesis of highly oriented a-axis CrO2 films onto (0001)
sapphire by atmospheric pressure CVD from CrO3 precursor, at growth
temperatures down to 330 degree Celsius, i.e. close to 70 degrees lower than in
published data for the same chemical system. The films keep the high quality
magnetic behaviour as those deposited at higher temperature, which can be
looked as a promising result in view of their use with thermally sensitive
materials, e.g. narrow band gap semiconductors.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Hints of the existence of Axion-Like-Particles from the gamma-ray spectra of cosmological sources
Axion Like Particles (ALPs) are predicted to couple with photons in the
presence of magnetic fields. This effect may lead to a significant change in
the observed spectra of gamma-ray sources such as AGNs. Here we carry out a
detailed study that for the first time simultaneously considers in the same
framework both the photon/axion mixing that takes place in the gamma-ray source
and that one expected to occur in the intergalactic magnetic fields. An
efficient photon/axion mixing in the source always means an attenuation in the
photon flux, whereas the mixing in the intergalactic medium may result in a
decrement and/or enhancement of the photon flux, depending on the distance of
the source and the energy considered. Interestingly, we find that decreasing
the value of the intergalactic magnetic field strength, which decreases the
probability for photon/axion mixing, could result in an increase of the
expected photon flux at Earth if the source is far enough. We also find a 30%
attenuation in the intensity spectrum of distant sources, which occurs at an
energy that only depends on the properties of the ALPs and the intensity of the
intergalactic magnetic field, and thus independent of the AGN source being
observed. Moreover, we show that this mechanism can easily explain recent
puzzles in the spectra of distant gamma-ray sources... [ABRIDGED] The
consequences that come from this work are testable with the current generation
of gamma-ray instruments, namely Fermi (formerly known as GLAST) and imaging
