Fostering university-public administration links through local case studies in executive education

The gap between public managers and academics has long been a topic of discussion in the field of public affairs. This article presents a successful strategy to bridge this gap: the creation and use of local case studies in executive education for Portuguese public managers. We found that the creation process, which included interviews with practitioners, allowed them to reflect on their work from the framework of academic theories. As for the use of cases in the classroom, the local aspect of the case studies - set in Portuguese institutions, and shaped by the local values, mores, and norms - fostered the appropriation of the subject matter and enhanced the sharing of experiences and ideas, combining academic theory with tacit knowledge from the field. We discuss examples of the observed benefits, as well as the challenges and possibilities of replicating the strategy in other contexts.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Soil organic matter fractions as a short-term indicator of carbon turnover under agricultural systems.

Integrated crop-livestock-forest (ICLF) systems has been considered as an important strategy to enhance C sequestration. However, changes in soil C due to agricultural management practices, in general, are observed in long-term experiments. Our objective was to investigate short-term impacts on soil organic matter under different management systems in the Cerrado/Amazonia region. Treatments corresponded to ICLF, No-tillage, Pasture and Eucalyptus plantation. Soil was sampled in 2014, in the 0-5, 5-10 and 10-30 cm layers for quantification of light- and heavy-fraction C stocks as well as their C isotopic composition (DELTA 13C). After three years established, all evaluated treatments showed similar values of light- and heavy-fraction C stocks to those observed under Native Forest in the 0-30 cm layer. Under Pasture and ILCF treatments, we observed that most of C of the light-fraction was substituted by pasturederived C in the uppermost soil layer (0-5 cm). Despite no differences in heavyand light-fraction C, the application of 13C stable isotope technique seems to be an important tool to evaluate short-term C turnover under agricultural systems

Neuroimaging Findings in Paediatric Patients with Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an autosomal recessive haemoglobinopathy, which manifests as multisystem ischaemia and infarction, as well as haemolytic anaemia. The morphological changes of red blood cells (RBCs) that promote ischaemia/infarction as the main multi-systemic manifestation, with associated vasculopathy, may also lead to haemorrhage and fat embolisation. Bone infarctions, whether of the skull or spine, are relatively common with subsequent increased infectious susceptibility. We present a broad spectrum of brain and spine imaging findings of SCD from a level III paediatric hospital in Lisbon, between 2010 and 2022. Our aim is to highlight brain and spine imaging findings from a serial review of multiple patients with SCD and respective neuroimaging characterisation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
