On two problems of arithmetic degree theory : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Mathematics at Massey University

    Get PDF
The reader of this thesis should already have a basic understanding of ideal theory. For this reason it is recommended that a good introduction to this subject would be gained from reading D. G. Northcott's book "Ideal Theory", paying special attention to chapters one and three. This thesis consists of three chapters, with chapter one providing the definitions and theorems which will be used throughout. Then I will be considering two problems on the arithmetic degree of an ideal, one posed by Sturmfels, Trung and Vogel and the other by Renschuch. These problems will be described in the introductions to chapters two and three

Reviewing the field of technology education in New Zealand

    Get PDF
In this chapter we discuss the development of technology as a field of study within compulsory education in New Zealand. We argue that technology education has found a place in the national curriculum, research, and teacher education, resulting in technology classroom practice to some degree in all New Zealand schools

The incorporation of technology into the school curriculum is part of a worldwide trend in education. The way in which technology is incorporated depends on which country the reform is initiated in. The New Zealand Curriculum Framework (Ministry of Education, 1993a) includes science and technology as distinct learning areas. This chapter considers the view of technology expressed in both science in the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 1993b) and in Technology in the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 1995). The chapter is divided into four sections. Firstly, the concept of technology in the science curriculum is identified and discussed; secondly, the use of some types of technological application to enhance the learning of science outcomes is considered; thirdly, the technology curriculum itself is discussed in order to highlight the concept of technology underpinning this statement so that comparisons can be made with the concept employed in the science curriculum, and finally the introduction of technology outcomes by science teachers in a science environment is explored

Evaluation of a standard test method for total hemispherical emittance of surfaces from 293K to 1673K

Emittance tests were made on samples of Rene' 41, Haynes 188, and Inconel 625 superalloy metals in an evaluation of a standard test method for determining total hemispherical emittances of surfaces from 293 K to 1673 K. The intent of this evaluation was to address any problems encountered, check repeatability of measured emittances, and gain experience in use of the test procedure. Five test specimens were fabricated to prescribe test dimensions and surfaces cleaned of oil and residue. Three of these specimens were without oxidized surfaces and two with oxidized surfaces. The oxidized specimens were Rene' 41 and Haynes 188. The tests were conducted in a vacuum where the samples were resistance-heated to various temperature levels ranging from 503 K to 1293 K. The calculated results for emittance, in the worst case, were repeatable to a maximum spread to + or - 4% from the mean of five sets of plotted data for each specimen
