Fourteen Years of Education and Public Outreach for the Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer Mission
The Sonoma State University (SSU) Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) group
leads the Swift Education and Public Outreach program. For Swift, we have
previously implemented broad efforts that have contributed to NASA's Science
Mission Directorate E/PO portfolio across many outcome areas. Our current focus
is on highly-leveraged and demonstrably successful activities, including the
wide-reaching Astrophysics Educator Ambassador program, and our popular
websites: Epo's Chronicles and the Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) Skymap. We also make
major contributions working collaboratively through the Astrophysics Science
Education and Public Outreach Forum (SEPOF) on activities such as the on-line
educator professional development course NASA's Multiwavelength Universe. Past
activities have included the development of many successful education units
including the GEMS Invisible Universe guide, the Gamma-ray Burst Educator's
guide, and the Newton's Laws Poster set; informal activities including support
for the International Year of Astronomy, the development of a toolkit about
supernovae for the amateur astronomers in the Night Sky Network, and the Swift

Manufacturing development of DC-10 advanced rudder
The design, manufacture, and ground test activities during development of production methods for an advanced composite rudder for the DC-10 transport aircraft are described. The advanced composite aft rudder is satisfactory for airline service and a cost saving in a full production manufacturing mode is anticipated
Studies of highly variable galactic X-ray sources with HEAO-1
Analysis HEAO-Al data on MXB1659-29 revealed a 7.1 hour period from this X-ray burst source. The erratic dips seen in both SAS-3 and HEAO-Al data were concentrated within 1.5 hours (about 25%) of the orbital cycle. There appeared to be a stable dip at the end of the 1.5 h of erratic varibility. It was established that the stable dip was a true eclipse of the central X-ray emitting object. MXB1659-29 is the first X-ray burster to show eclipses and a precise orbital clock
Study of aircraft crashworthiness for fire protection
Impact-survivable postcrash fire accidents were surveyed. The data base developed includes foreign and domestic accidents involving airlines and jet aircraft. The emphasis was placed on domestic accidents, airlines, and jet aircraft due principally to availability of information. Only transport category aircraft in commercial service designed under FAR Part 25 were considered. A matrix was prepared to show the relationships between the accident characteristics and the fire fatalities. Typical postcrash fire scenaries were identified. Safety concepts were developed for three engineering categories: cabin interiors - cabin subsystems; power plant - engines and fuel systems; and structural mechanics - primary and secondary structures. The parameters identified for concept evaluation are cost, effectiveness, and societal concerns. Three concepts were selected for design definition and cost and effectiveness analysis: improved fire-resistant seat materials; anti-misting kerosene; and additional cabin emergency exits
Transport aircraft accident dynamics
A study was carried out of 112 impact survivable jet transport aircraft accidents (world wide) of 27,700 kg (60,000 lb.) aircraft and up extending over the last 20 years. This study centered on the effect of impact and the follow-on events on aircraft structures and was confined to the approach, landing and takeoff segments of the flight. The significant characteristics, frequency of occurrence and the effect on the occupants of the above data base were studied and categorized with a view to establishing typical impact scenarios for use as a basis of verifying the effectiveness of potential safety concepts. Studies were also carried out of related subjects such as: (1) assessment of advanced materials; (2) human tolerance to impact; (3) merit functions for safety concepts; and (4) impact analysis and test methods
