Mandela and excellent African leadership : lessons from an appreciative thematic analysis

    Get PDF
Abstract: Nelson Mandela is highly regarded as an example par excellence of African leadership. In this regard he is praised for the ways in which he united South Africans, ushering in a new national order. Yet little has been done in Communication Study, in South Africa, to describe the key leadership communication traits that make up his leadership. What is more, notwithstanding some claims regarding how Mandela embodied ubuntu in practice, little has been done to locate and theorise his leadership style in relation to African traditions of communication. This paper presents an appreciative thematic analysis of how Mandela’s leadership communication practices were eulogised and remembered in selected South African newspapers in the ten day period between his death and burial. This entails putting into play a methodological innovation that brings insights from appreciative enquiry to bear on established practices of thematic analysis. The aim is to arrive at key lessons for contemporary and future leadership that can be drawn from the praise of Mandela that is found in the extraordinary newspaper coverage of him that one finds in this time of mourning

When winners need help: Mental health in elite sport

What connects these individuals Frank Bruno, Dame Kelly Holmes, Marcus Trescothick and Clarke Carlisle? If you said are all are winners you would be correct, if you said all are elite sports individuals you would also be correct, but there is something else that connects these elitelevel athletes. They have all reported having mental health concerns either whilst performing or shortly after retiring. Boxer Frank Bruno has bipolar disorder and depression and has been admitted to psychiatric wards 3 times in the last 12 years. Dame Kelly Holmes was battling depression in the lead up to the 2004 Olympics. Marcus Trescothick was playing cricket for England when depression forced his retirement. In 2014, Clarke Carlisle attempted to take his own life by jumping in front of an oncoming lorry and was later admitted to a psychiatric unit for depression. These elite sportspeople are not alone, the list could have included Gary Speed, footballer and Manager who took his own life in November 2012 after battling with depression or Terry Newton, Rugby league player, who also sadly took his own life in 2010, after being sacked and being found to have used performance-enhancing drugs

The Development and Validation of the Adolescent Sport Drug Inventory (ASDI) among Athletes from Four Continents

A significant barrier to understanding the psychosocial antecedents of doping use among adolescent athletes is the lack of valid measures. In order to address this issue, the first aim of this paper was to develop and validate the Adolescent Sport Drug Inventory (ASDI) among adolescent athletes from Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. The second aim was to assess the construct validity of the ASDI. As such, this paper is divided into two parts. Part 1 relates to the development of the ASDI and contains two studies: item development (Study 1) and factorial validity (Study 2). Part 2 contains information on how the psychosocial variables measured in the ASDI are associated with situational temptation, and honesty (Study 3), maturation (Study 4), stress and coping (Study 5), and coaching (Study 6). In devising the ASDI, 19 different models were examined, which culminated in a 9-factor, 43-item ASDI. Coping, mastery-approach goals, and cognitive-social maturity were associated with doping attitudes. Caring motivational climates, strong coach-athlete relationships, and positive coach behaviors were associated with athletes being less susceptible toward doping, which provides construct validity for the ASDI. The ASDI is a valid tool to assess the psychosocial factors associated with doping among adolescent athletes. This questionnaire can be used to identify athletes who are the most at risk of doping, assess how the psychosocial factors associated with doping change over time, and to monitor the impact of antidoping interventions for adolescent athletes

Quantum Clock Synchronization Based on Shared Prior Entanglement

We demonstrate that two spatially separated parties (Alice and Bob) can utilize shared prior quantum entanglement, and classical communications, to establish a synchronized pair of atomic clocks. In contrast to classical synchronization schemes, the accuracy of our protocol is independent of Alice or Bob's knowledge of their relative locations or of the properties of the intervening medium.Comment: 4 page

Engineering enzymes with non-canonical active site functionality

The combination of computational enzyme design and laboratory evolution provides an attractive platform for the creation of protein catalysts with new function. To date, designed mechanisms have relied upon Nature’s alphabet of 20 genetically encoded amino acids, which greatly restricts the range of functionality which can be installed into enzyme active sites. Here, we have exploited engineered components of the cellular translation machinery to create a protein catalyst which operates via a non-canonical catalytic nucleophile. We have subsequently shown that powerful laboratory evolution protocols can be readily adapted to allow optimization of enzymes containing non-canonical active site functionality. Crystal structures obtained along the evolutionary trajectory highlight the origins of improved activity. Thus our approach merges beneficial features of organo- and biocatalysis, by combining the intrinsic reactivities and greater versatility of small molecule catalysts with the rate enhancements, reaction selectivities and evolvability of proteins.
