Learning the language of school history: the role of linguistics in mapping the writing demands of the secondary school curriculum
This paper reports on a research study which used the tools of functional linguistics to illuminate the writing requirements of the history curriculum in the context of Australian secondary schools. It shows how the resulting linguistic description was integrated into a sequence of teaching and learning activities through collaboration between linguist specialists and content/pedagogic specialists. These activities were designed to facilitate students’ writing skills whilst simultaneously developing their historical knowledge. An independent evaluation of the approach pointed to positive changes in teachers’ attitudes and behaviours regarding the role of language in learning history. Equally, students’ writing improved, particularly in terms of its organisation and structure
Using exchange structure analysis to explore argument in text-based computer conferences
Computer conferencing provides a new site for students to develop and rehearse argumentation skills, but much remains to be learnt about how to encourage and support students in this environment. Asynchronous text-based discussion differs in significant ways from face-to-face discussion, creating a need for specially designed schemes for analysis. This paper discusses some of the problems of analysing asynchronous argumentation, and puts forward an analytical framework based on exchange structure analysis, which brings a linguistic perspective to bear on the interaction. Key features of the framework are attention to both interactive and ideational aspects of the discussion,
and the ability to track the dynamic construction of argument content. The paper outlines the framework itself, and discusses some of the findings afforded by this type of analysis, and its limitations

Properties of Exotic Matter for Heavy Ion Searches
We examine the properties of both forms of strange matter, small lumps of
strange quark matter (strangelets) and of strange hadronic matter (Metastable
Exotic Multihypernuclear Objects: MEMOs) and their relevance for present and
future heavy ion searches. The strong and weak decays are discussed separately
to distinguish between long-lived and short-lived candidates where the former
ones are detectable in present heavy ion experiments while the latter ones in
future heavy ion experiments, respectively. We find some long-lived strangelet
candidates which are highly negatively charged with a mass to charge ratio like
a anti deuteron (M/Z=-2) but masses of A=10 to 16. We predict also many
short-lived candidates, both in quark and in hadronic form, which can be highly
charged. Purely hyperonic nuclei are bound and have a negative charge while
carrying a positive baryon number. We demonstrate also that multiply charmed
exotics (charmlets) might be bound and can be produced at future heavy ion

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD)
The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) completes the three layers of the
Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) to make an inner tracking system located inside
the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This additional fourth layer provides two
dimensional hit position and energy loss measurements for charged particles,
improving the extrapolation of TPC tracks through SVT hits. To match the high
multiplicity of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC the double sided silicon strip
technology was chosen which makes the SSD a half million channels detector.
Dedicated electronics have been designed for both readout and control. Also a
novel technique of bonding, the Tape Automated Bonding (TAB), was used to
fullfill the large number of bounds to be done. All aspects of the SSD are
shortly described here and test performances of produced detection modules as

Understanding the impact and tackling the burden of osteoarthritis for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Objective
The aim of this study was to understand and describe the lived experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with osteoarthritis.
Methods
Qualitative study guided by cultural security, which ensures that research is conducted in a way that will not compromise the cultural values, beliefs, and expectations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Participants were purposively sampled through the networks of project staff. Research yarns (a cultural form of conversation used as a data gathering tool) were conducted with 25 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults with self-reported osteoarthritis in Western Australia and Victoria, Australia. Data were analyzed using a framework approach and presented through composite storytelling (hypothetical stories representing an amalgam of participants’ experiences).
Results
Two composite stories were constructed to reflect themes relating to beliefs and knowledge, impact, coping, and health care experiences. Common beliefs held by participants were that osteoarthritis is caused by previous physically active lifestyles. Many participants feared for their future, increasing disability and needing a wheelchair. Pain associated with osteoarthritis impacted daily activities, sleep, work, family, and social life and cultural activities. Multidimensional impacts were often experienced within complex health or life circumstances and associated with increased anxiety and depression. Most participants reported negative health care experiences, characterized by poor patient–provider communication.
Conclusion
Our findings highlight that osteoarthritis is a multidimensional issue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that permeates all aspects of life and highlights the need for integrated, multidisciplinary care that is culturally informed and individualized to patient need
Is Strangeness still interesting at RHIC ?
With the advent of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven
National Laboratory (BNL), Heavy Ion Physics will enter a new energy regime.
The question is whether the signatures proposed for the discovery of a phase
transition from hadronic matter to a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), that were
established on the basis of collisions at the BEVALAC, the AGS, and the SPS,
respectively, are still useful and detectable at these high incident energies.
In the past two decades, measurements related to strangeness formation in the
collision were advocated as potential signatures and were tested in numerous
fixed target experiments at the AGS and the SPS. In this article I will review
the capabilities of the RHIC detectors to measure various aspects of
strangeness, and I will try to answer the question whether the information

Can Doubly Strange Dibaryon Resonances be Discovered at RHIC?
The baryon-baryon continuum invariant mass spectrum generated from
relativistic nucleus + nucleus collision data may reveal the existence of
doubly-strange dibaryons not stable against strong decay if they lie within a
few MeV of threshold. Furthermore, since the dominant component of these states
is a superposition of two color-octet clusters which can be produced
intermediately in a color-deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP), an enhanced
production of dibaryon resonances could be a signal of QGP formation. A total
of eight, doubly-strange dibaryon states are considered for experimental search
using the STAR detector (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) at the new Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These states may decay to Lambda-Lambda and/or
proton-Cascade-minus, depending on the resonance energy. STAR's large
acceptance, precision tracking and vertex reconstruction capabilities, and
large data volume capacity, make it an ideal instrument to use for such a
search. Detector performance and analysis sensitivity are studied as a function
of resonance production rate and width for one particular dibaryon which can
directly strong decay to proton-Cascade-minus but not Lambda-Lambda. Results
indicate that such resonances may be discovered using STAR if the resonance
production rates are comparable to coalescence model predictions for dibaryon

Underground railroads: citizen entitlements and unauthorized mobility in the antebellum period and today
In recent years, some scholars and prominent political figures have advocated the deepening of North American integration on roughly the European Union model, including the creation of new political institutions and the free movement of workers across borders. The construction of such a North American Union, if it included even a very thin trans-state citizenship regime, could represent the most significant expansion of individual entitlements in the region since citizenship was extended to former slaves in the United States. With such a possibility as its starting point, this article explores some striking parallels between the mass, legally prohibited movement across boundaries by fugitive slaves in the pre-Civil War period, and that by current unauthorized migrants to the United States. Both were, or are, met on their journeys by historically parallel groups of would-be helpers and hinderers. Their unauthorized movements in both periods serve as important signals of incomplete entitlements or institutional protections. Most crucially, moral arguments for extending fuller entitlements to both groups are shown here to be less distinct than may be prima facie evident, reinforcing the case for expanding and deepening the regional membership regime
