    Determinants of Cost to Client in Accessing Rural Financial Services ā€“ A Case of Zambia's Chongwe District

    Providing affordable access to appropriate financial services for the low-income population has been an on-going challenge for most developing nations, Zambia included. On this premise, this paper seeks to empirically investigate and quantify costs to clients in accessing financial services in the rural areas of Zambia, based on cross-sectional primary data collected in the Chongwe district from 236 households, documentation and key informant interviews. This study used the Probit and Heckman selection models to analyse cost to the client factors affecting the likelihood of accessing financial services (credit) by rural households in Zambia. Results revealed that householdsā€™ costs incurred by clients in accessing financial services are not limited to financial costs such interest, fees, transport and savings, etc., but equally other hidden costs such regulatory and compliance costs, economic costs, psychological costs, and social and cultural costs. The study recommends that policy formulation in the areas of financial inclusion, rural and agricultural finance should be based on reducing cost-to-client attributes such as the regulatory and compliance costs, economic costs and psychological costs identified above.     Prevention of drug residues in milk is a daily endeavor on dairy farms. There is increasing scrutiny from the public and government when it comes to drug residues in milk. Drug residues can result from simple human errors, disease processes not allowing for normal clearance of a drug, or malicious activity. The testing methodologies used to detect drug residues have become more sensitive with many tests available that can detect drug levels below ten parts per billion (ppb)

    A survey of castration methods and associated livestock management practices performed by bovine veterinarians in the United States

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Castration of male calves destined for beef production is a common management practice performed in the United States amounting to approximately 15 million procedures per year. Societal concern about the moral and ethical treatment of animals is increasing. Therefore, production agriculture is faced with the challenge of formulating animal welfare policies relating to routine management practices such as castration. To enable the livestock industry to effectively respond to these challenges there is a need for more data on management practices that are commonly used in cattle production systems. The objective of this survey was to describe castration methods, adverse events and husbandry procedures performed by U.S. veterinarians at the time of castration. Invitations to participate in the survey were sent to email addresses of 1,669 members of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and 303 members of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After partially completed surveys and missing data were omitted, 189 responses were included in the analysis. Surgical castration with a scalpel followed by testicular removal by twisting (calves <90 kg) or an emasculator (calves >90 kg) was the most common method of castration used. The potential risk of injury to the operator, size of the calf, handling facilities and experience with the technique were the most important considerations used to determine the method of castration used. Swelling, stiffness and increased lying time were the most prevalent adverse events observed following castration. One in five practitioners report using an analgesic or local anesthetic at the time of castration. Approximately 90% of respondents indicated that they vaccinate and dehorn calves at the time of castration. Over half the respondents use disinfectants, prophylactic antimicrobials and tetanus toxoid to reduce complications following castration.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of this survey describe current methods of castration and associated management practices employed by bovine veterinarians in the U.S. Such data are needed to guide future animal well-being research, the outcomes of which can be used to develop industry-relevant welfare guidelines.</p

    Topical Flunixin Meglumine Effects on Pain Associated Biomarkers after Dehorning

    Twenty-four calves were dehorned and treated with either topical flunixin meglumine formulated for systemic absorption or a placebo. Biomarkers associated with pain were evaluated for up to 72 hour after the dehorning procedure. Plasma cortisol concentrations, 90 minutes post-dehorning, and mechanical nociception threshold at the control site were the only tested biomarkers where a significant difference was demonstrated. No other differences of biomarkers between the two dehorned groups were observed for any time points. Although this product is easy to dose and dispense, its effects on pain biomarkers appears to be negligible

    Embedded Micro-Computer Base Force Plate as an Objective Tool to Measure Hoof Lameness Phases in Multiparous Sows

    The objective of this study was to compare differences in weight placed on each hoof from sows in differing lameness phases. Twelve, clinically healthy, mixed-parity, crossbred sows (228.89Ā±19.17 kg) were used. The sow was the experimental unit and a cross-over design with a 2 (hind left and hind right hoof) x 3 (days: D-1, D+1 and D+6) factorial arrangement of treatments were compared. On induction day, 10 mg of amphotericin B were injected in the distal interphalangeal joint space in both claws of one hind hoof. All sows served as their own control and treatment. After completion of the first round, sows were given a 7-day rest period and then the round procedures were repeated with the opposite hind hoof induced. Sows stood individually on an embedded force plate for 15 minutes, and weight on each hoof was measured independently. All data were statistically analyzed using the PROC MIXED procedure in SAS. On the D+1, sows exhibited less weight bearing on the induced lame hoof compared to D-1 (P \u3c 0.0001). Regardless of which hoof was injected, sow weight distribution did not vary between the injected left or right hind hooves (P = 0.99) or between rounds (P = 0.64). Findings from our study indicate that the embedded force plate exhibited differences between sound and most lame phases indicating the potential as an objective tool for detecting differences in weight distribution when sows are sound and lame

    Effects of postpartum treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on milk production and culling risk in dairy cattle

    Dairy Research, 2014 is known as Dairy Day, 2014Inflammation during early lactation is common in dairy cattle, and a high degree of inflammation during this time has recently been associated with both lower productivity and greater risk of disease during that lactation. Early lactation treatments with two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were compared with a placebo treatment to evaluate effects on whole-lactation productivity and retention in the herd. Both meloxicam and sodium salicylate increased whole-lactation milk and milk protein yields by 6 to 9%, despite being administered for only 1 or 3 days in early lactation, respectively. In addition, meloxicam treatment tended to decrease the risk of cows leaving the herd during the lactation. These results indicate that postpartum inflammatory signals have long-lasting effects on lactation in dairy cattle
