Searching High Redshift Large-Scale Structures: Photometry of Four Fields Around Quasar Pairs at z~1
We have studied the photometric properties of four fields around the
high-redshift quasar pairs QP1310+0007, QP1355-0032, QP0110-0219, and
QP0114-3140 at z ~ 1 with the aim of identifying large-scale structures- galaxy
clusters or groups- around them. This sample was observed with GMOS in Gemini
North and South telescopes in the g', r', i', and z' bands, and our photometry
is complete to a limiting magnitude of i' ~ 24 mag (corresponding to ~ M*_i' +
2 at the redshift of the pairs). Our analysis reveals that QP0110-0219 shows
very strong and QP1310+0007 and QP1355-0032 show some evidence for the presence
of rich galaxy clusters in direct vicinity of the pairs. On the other hand,
QP0114-3140 could be an isolated pair in a poor environment. This work suggest
that z ~ 1 quasar pairs are excellent tracers of high density environments and
this same technique may be useful to find clusters at higher redshifts.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted. Added one figure and 3 references.

The properties of highly luminous IRAS galaxies
From a complete sample of 154 galaxies identified with IRAS sources in a 304 sq deg area centered on the South Galactic Pole, a subsample of 58 galaxies with L sub IR/L sub B > 3 was chosen. Low resolution spectra were obtained for 30% of the subsample and redshifts and relative emission line intensities were derived. As a class these galaxies are very luminous with = 2.9 x 10 to the 11th power L sub 0 and (L sub IR) max = 1.3 x 10 to the 12th power L sub 0. CCD images and JHK photometry were obtained for many of the subsample. The galaxies are for the most part newly identified and are optically faint, with a majority showing evidence of a recent interaction. Radio continuum observations of all galaxies of the subsample were recently obtained at 20 cm VLA with about 75% being detected in a typical integration time of about 10 minutes
Melt-quenched porous organic cage glasses
The discrete molecular nature of porous organic cages (POCs) has allowed us to direct the formation of crystalline materials by crystal engineering. It has also been possible to create porous amorphous solids by deliberately disrupting the crystalline packing, either with chemical modification or by processing. More recently, organic cages were used to form isotropic porous liquids. However, the connection between solid and liquid states of POCs, and the glass state, are almost completely unexplored. Here, we investigate the melting and glass-forming behaviour of a range of organic cages, including both shapepersistent POCs formed by imine condensation, and reduced and synthetically post-modified amine POCs that are more flexible and lack shape-persistence. The organic cages exhibited melting and quenching of the resultant liquids provides molecular glasses. One of these molecular glasses exhibited improved gas uptake for both CO2 and CH4 compared to the starting amorphous cage. In addition, foaming of the liquid in one case resulted in a more stable and less soluble glass, which demonstrates the potential for an alternative approach to forming materials such as membranes without solution processing
Systematic identification of IRAS point sources
A large scale program was initiated to identify IRAS point sources. At ROE the ideal facilities are at hand to undertake such a large program, viz. the rapid scanning capabilities of the COSMOS measuring machine to exploit the depth and resolution of the U.K. Schmidt Telescope J survey plates. Sources in 44 Schmidt plate areas were identified including 1300 sources and covering 1100 square degrees. The identification comprise 700 galaxy identifications and 600 stellar identifications. There are also about 40 sources with no obvious identification but which can be most easily explained by cirrus, confusion between two sources or sources just outside the 2 sigma error box. A major aim with the galaxy identification is to provide a data base from which sound statistical analyses can be made. Accurate blue magnitudes and morphological classifications for each identification were produced
A Renormalization Group Approach to Relativistic Cosmology
We discuss the averaging hypothesis tacitly assumed in standard cosmology.
Our approach is implemented in a "3+1" formalism and invokes the coarse
graining arguments, provided and supported by the real-space Renormalization
Group (RG) methods. Block variables are introduced and the recursion relations
written down explicitly enabling us to characterize the corresponding RG flow.
To leading order, the RG flow is provided by the Ricci-Hamilton equations
studied in connection with the geometry of three-manifolds. The properties of
the Ricci-Hamilton flow make it possible to study a critical behaviour of
cosmological models. This criticality is discussed and it is argued that it may
be related to the formation of sheet-like structures in the universe. We
provide an explicit expression for the renormalized Hubble constant and for the
scale dependence of the matter distribution. It is shown that the Hubble
constant is affected by non-trivial scale dependent shear terms, while the
spatial anisotropy of the metric influences significantly the scale-dependence

Enhanced diffusion and bound exciton interactions of high density implanted bismuth donors in silicon
This study reports the effect of an increasing ion dose on both the electrical activation yield and the characteristic properties of implanted bismuth donors in silicon. A strong dependence of implant fluence is observed on both the yield of bismuth donors and the measured impurity diffusion. This is such that higher ion concentrations result in both a decrease in activation and an enhancement in donor migration through interactions with mobile silicon lattice vacancies and interstitials. Furthermore, the effect of implant fluence on the properties of the Si:Bi donor bound exciton, D0X, is also explored using photoluminescence (PL) measurements. In the highest density sample, centers corresponding to the PL of bismuth D0Xs within both the high density region and the lower concentration diffused tail of the implanted donor profile are identifiable
Talking South African fathers: a critical examination of menâs constructions and experiences of fatherhood and fatherlessness
The absence of biological fathers in South Africa has been constructed as a problem for children of both sexes but more so for boy-children. Arguably the dominant discourse in this respect has demonized non-nuclear, female-headed households. Fathers are constructed as either absent or âbadâ. Thus it has become important to explore more closely how male care-givers have been experienced by groups of men in South Africa. This article examines discourses of fatherhood and fatherlessness by drawing on qualitative interviews with a group of 29 men who speak about their reported experiences and understandings of being fathered or growing up without biological fathers. Two major and intertwined subjugated discourses about adult menâs experiences of being fathered that counter- balance the prevailing discourses about meaning of fatherhood and fatherlessness became evident, namely, âbeing always thereâ and âtalking fatherhoodâ. The importance of the experience of fatherhood as âbeing thereâ, which relates to a quality of time and relationship between child and father rather than physical time together, is illustrated. It is not only biological fathers who can âbe thereâ for their sons but also social fathers, other significant male role models and father figures who step in at different times in participantsâ lives when biological fathers are unavailable for whatever reason. Second, many positive experiences of fathers or father figures that resist a traditional role of authority and control and subscribe to more nurturant and non-violent forms of care, represented as âtalkingâ fathers, are underlined. If we are to better understand the impact of colonial and apartheid history and its legacy on family life in contemporary society, there is a need for more historically and contextually informed studies on the meaning of fatherhood and fatherlessness.Web of Scienc
Modeling the impact of ocean circulation on chlorophyll blooms around South Georgia, Southern Ocean.
The northeast periphery of the Scotia Sea hosts one of the largest chlorophyllâa blooms of the Southern Ocean. This bloom peaks to the northwest of the island of South Georgia, extending eastward for hundreds of kilometers. Although the Southern Ocean has many islands of similar size, South Georgia is ecologically one of the most significant: It not only sustains one of the Southern Ocean's largest and most diverse ecosystems but also constitutes its single most important region for biological carbon sequestration. While the exceptional nature of South Georgia's blooms has been recognized widely, both the physical processes that contribute to their fertilization and the reasons why these blooms are larger than those of other similar regions (e.g., Kerguelen or Crozet Islands) are poorly understood. We use the results of a highâresolution ocean model to investigate the physical processes that mediate the entrainment of deep, ironârich waters into the surface layers of the South Georgia region. We show that the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front, the southernmost jet of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), pumps ironâenriched waters from the deep ocean onto the bottom layers of South Georgia's shelf. These waters are upwelled along the northern coast of the island and are then exported into the Georgia Basin, where topographically steered circulation shields them from the dispersive effects of local currents and eddies, thus allowing the bloom development
Masculinity, sexuality and vulnerability in 'working' with young men in South African contexts: 'you feel like a fool and an idiot...a loser'
South Africa has seen a rapid increase in scholarship and programmatic interventions
focusing on gender and sexuality, and more recently on boys, men and masculinities.
In this paper, we argue that a deterministic discourse on men's sexuality and masculinity
in general is inherent in many current understandings of adolescent male sexuality,
which tend to assume that young women are vulnerable and powerless and
young men are sexually powerful and inevitably also the perpetrators of sexual violence.
Framed within a feminist, social constructionist the oretical perspective, the
current research looked at how the masculinity and sexuality of South African young
men is constructed, challenged or maintained. Focus groups were conducted with
young men between the ages of 15 and 20 years from five different schools in two
regions of South Africa, the Western and Eastern Cape. Data were analysed using
Gilligan's listening guide method. Findings suggest that participants in this study
have internalised the notion of themselves as dangerous, but were also exploring
other possible ways of being male and being sexual, demonstrating more complex
experiences of manhood. We argue for the importance of documenting and highlighting
the precariousness, vulnerability and uncertainty of young men in scholarly and
programmatic work on masculinities.IBS
The cognitive integration of scientific instruments: Information, situated cognition, and scientific practice
Researchers in the biological and biomedical sciences, particularly those working in laboratories, use a variety of artifacts to help them perform their cognitive tasks. This paper analyses the relationship between researchers and cognitive artifacts in terms of integration. It first distinguishes different categories of cognitive artifacts used in biological practice on the basis of their informational properties. This results in a novel classification of scientific instruments, conducive to an analysis of the cognitive interactions between researchers and artifacts. It then uses a multidimensional framework in line with complementarity-based extended and distributed cognition theory to conceptualize how deeply instruments in different informational categories are integrated into the cognitive systems of their users. The paper concludes that the degree of integration depends on various factors, including the amount of informational malleability, the intensity and kind of information flow between agent and artifact, the trustworthiness of the information, the procedural and informational transparency, and the degree of individualisation
