The future of UAS: standards, regulations, and operational experiences [workshop report]

    Get PDF
This paper presents the outcomes of "The Future of UAS: Standards, Regulations and Operational Experiences" workshop, held on the 7th and 8th of December, 2006 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The goal of the workshop was to identify recent international activities in the Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS) airspace integration problem. The workshop attracted a broad cross-section of the UAS community, including: airspace and safety regulators, developers, operators and researchers. The three themes of discussion were: progress in the development of standards and regulations, lessons learnt from recent operations, and advances in new technologies. This paper summarises the activities of the workshop and explores the important outcomes and trends as perceived by the authors

An Investigation in to the Fecal Shedding of E. Coli O157:H7 from Steers on Rations Containing Corn Co-Products

Fecal shedding of E. coli O157:H7 was investigated in 140 feeder steers in a corn condensed distiller’s soluble (CCDS) feeding trial at a university field station. Steers were fed diets for differing time periods in pasture and feedlot pen conditions. Individual-animal and composite fecal samples were cultured for E. coli O157:H7 using immunomagnetic bead concentration. None of the fecal samples from steers housed in pens were positive. One of the fecal samples collected from the pastured animals was positive. Inclusion of CCDS in steer diets did not result in higher fecal shedding of E. coli O157:H7 in animals being fed diets containing CCDS over those that were not

The Impact of Age on Human Face Matching Performance with Images of Children

This item is only available electronically. The ability to accurately conduct facial comparisons with images of children is instrumental for various applied purposes, such as the prevention of child trafficking. Despite this, previous research has shown that one-to-one face matching is especially challenging on images of young children and those which show significant age-related facial changes. However, limited research has tested performance on more operationally challenging face matching tasks (one-to-eight) using images of children. This study used a one-to-eight task to explore the extent that performance varied across three childhood age groups (0-5, 5-10 and 10-15) with a 5-year age variation between target and comparison images. Participants (N = 42) completed 120 randomised face matching trials and their accuracy and confidence ratings were analysed. Results found the worst performance for the 0-5-year age group (16% accuracy), compared to 5-10 (26%) and 10-15 (30%) groups, suggesting that performance increased with age. Additionally, no significant differences were found between target-present and target-absent trials. The alarmingly high error rates found in all conditions highlights the importance of understanding and improving performance. Future research should continue to build upon these findings by testing generalisability to practitioner populations, exploring individual differences and evaluating ways to improve performance.Thesis (B.PsychSc(Hons)) -- University of Adelaide, School of Psychology, 201

Does Presenting Patients’ BMI Increase Documentation of Obesity?

    Get PDF
Purpose: Despite the associated health consequences, obesity is infrequently documented as a problem in medical charts. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a simple intervention (routine listing of the BMI on the medical chart) will increase physician documentation of obesity in the medical record. Methods: Participants were resident physicians in a family medicine residency program. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group. For experimental group physicians, the Body Mass Index was listed alongside other vital signs of patients seen in an ambulatory setting. Physician documentation of patient obesity was assessed by chart review after patient visits. Documentation was defined as inclusion of obesity on the problem list or in the progress note. Results: The intervention did not significantly increase the rate of documentation of obesity in the medical chart. Several reasons for the lack of change are explored, including the difficulty of treating obesity successfully

A Made Place, An Eternal Place: Robert Duncan's Poetics of Space

This dissertation examines the poetry of Robert Duncan and the dominant role space plays in that poetry. By examining the foundations of Duncan's poetics, particularly his anarchist political views, how those views pertain to the law, and his spiritual belief in immanence, I clarify the nature of the many kinds of spaces found throughout Duncan's work. Focusing on three volumes specifically, The Opening of the Field, Roots and Branches, and Bending the Bow, I argue for a conception of space I call temenos, a conception that allows for a reading of Duncan's poetry in terms of a poetics of space that informs every aspect of his work. I examine three spaces in particular: the body, the dance-ground, and the household, and through this examination argue for a reading of Duncan's work as creating space and as a space created, exemplified by Simon Rodia's Watts Towers, memorialized in Duncan's poem, "Nel Mezzo del Cammin di Nostra Vita." Finally, reading Duncan in terms of temenos allows for a placement of Duncan in postmodern terms and to consider the ways in which temenos can be used as a model for considering other spaces, such as Hakim Bey's Temporary Autonomous Zone and Gilles Delueze's fold
