Development of a technology adoption and usage prediction tool for assistive technology for people with dementia
This article is available open access through the publisherâs website at the link below. Copyright @ The Authors 2013.In the current work, data gleaned from an assistive technology (reminding technology), which has been evaluated with people with Dementia over a period of several years was retrospectively studied to extract the factors that contributed to successful adoption. The aim was to develop a prediction model with the capability of prospectively assessing whether the assistive technology would be suitable for persons with Dementia (and their carer), based on user characteristics, needs and perceptions. Such a prediction tool has the ability to empower a formal carer to assess, through a very limited amount of questions, whether the technology will be adopted and used.EPSR
Quantum Effects in the Mechanical Properties of Suspended Nanomechanical Systems
We explore the quantum aspects of an elastic bar supported at both ends and
subject to compression. If strain rather than stress is held fixed, the system
remains stable beyond the buckling instability, supporting two potential
minima. The classical equilibrium transverse displacement is analogous to a
Ginsburg-Landau order parameter, with strain playing the role of temperature.
We calculate the quantum fluctuations about the classical value as a function
of strain. Excitation energies and quantum fluctuation amplitudes are compared
for silicon beams and carbon nanotubes.Comment: RevTeX4. 5 pages, 3 eps figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Elastic Wave Transmission at an Abrupt Junction in a Thin Plate, with Application to Heat Transport and Vibrations in Mesoscopic Systems
The transmission coefficient for vibrational waves crossing an abrupt
junction between two thin elastic plates of different widths is calculated.
These calculations are relevant to ballistic phonon thermal transport at low
temperatures in mesoscopic systems and the Q for vibrations in mesoscopic
oscillators. Complete results are calculated in a simple scalar model of the
elastic waves, and results for long wavelength modes are calculated using the
full elasticity theory calculation. We suggest that thin plate elasticty theory
provide a useful and tractable approximation to the full three dimensional
geometry.Comment: 35 pages, including 12 figure
Energy decay and frequency shift of a superconducting qubit from non-equilibrium quasiparticles
Quasiparticles are an important decoherence mechanism in superconducting
qubits, and can be described with a complex admittance that is a generalization
of the Mattis-Bardeen theory. By injecting non-equilibrium quasiparticles with
a tunnel junction, we verify qualitatively the expected change of the decay
rate and frequency in a phase qubit. With their relative change in agreement to
within 4% of prediction, the theory can be reliably used to infer quasiparticle
density. We describe how settling of the decay rate may allow determination of
whether qubit energy relaxation is limited by non-equilibrium quasiparticles.Comment: Main paper: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Supplementary material: 8

Deterministic entanglement of photons in two superconducting microwave resonators
Quantum entanglement, one of the defining features of quantum mechanics, has
been demonstrated in a variety of nonlinear spin-like systems. Quantum
entanglement in linear systems has proven significantly more challenging, as
the intrinsic energy level degeneracy associated with linearity makes quantum
control more difficult. Here we demonstrate the quantum entanglement of photon
states in two independent linear microwave resonators, creating N-photon NOON
states as a benchmark demonstration. We use a superconducting quantum circuit
that includes Josephson qubits to control and measure the two resonators, and
we completely characterize the entangled states with bipartite Wigner
tomography. These results demonstrate a significant advance in the quantum
control of linear resonators in superconducting circuits.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, and 3 tables including supplementary materia

Control of Dephasing and Phonon Emission in Coupled Quantum Dots
We predict that phonon subband quantization can be detected in the non-linear
electron current through double quantum dot qubits embedded into nano-size
semiconductor slabs, acting as phonon cavities. For particular values of the
dot level splitting , piezo-electric or deformation potential
scattering is either drastically reduced as compared to the bulk case, or
strongly enhanced due to phonon van Hove singularities. By tuning via
gate voltages, one can either control dephasing, or strongly increase emission
into phonon modes with characteristic angular distributions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication as Rapid Comm. in Phys.

Electromechanical instability in suspended carbon nanotubes
We have theoretically investigated electromechanical properties of freely
suspended carbon nanotubes when a current is injected into the tubes using a
scanning tunneling microscope. We show that a shuttle-like electromechanical
instability can occur if the bias voltage exceeds a dissipation-dependent
threshold value. An instability results in large amplitude vibrations of the
carbon nanotube bending mode, which modify the current-voltage characteristics
of the system
Quantum process tomography of two-qubit controlled-Z and controlled-NOT gates using superconducting phase qubits
We experimentally demonstrate quantum process tomography of controlled-Z and
controlled-NOT gates using capacitively-coupled superconducting phase qubits.
These gates are realized by using the state of the phase qubit. We
obtain a process fidelity of 0.70 for the controlled-phase and 0.56 for the
controlled-NOT gate, with the loss of fidelity mostly due to single-qubit
decoherence. The controlled-Z gate is also used to demonstrate a two-qubit
Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm with a single function query.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, including supplementary informatio
