Videogame Music: chiptunes byte back?
This chapter explores the sonic subcultures of videogame art and videogame-related fan art. It looks at the work of videogame musicians - not those producing the music for commercial games - but artists and hobbyists who produce musci by hacking and reprogramming videogame hardware, or by sampling in-game sound effects and music for use in their own compositions. This chapter explores some of the areas of intersection between videogames and both digital and non-digital art practice. By looking at examples of art practice drawn from videogames, it outlines some of the categories and so provides an overview of this area, placing it within the wider context of contemporary and historical art practice. The chapter explores the tendency for mucyh of this work to have elements of subversion or "détournement" whilst also identifying areas of tension in the appropriation of videogames as material for art practice
Survey of psychosocial support provided by UK paediatric oncology centres
Aim: To obtain a comprehensive overview of current patterns of psychosocial support provided by National Health Service ( NHS) paediatric oncology treatment centres across the UK. Methods: A postal questionnaire was sent to co-ordinators in the UK Children's Cancer Study Group ( a professional body that is responsible for the organisation of treatment and management of childhood cancer in the UK) in 21 treatment centres and three separate Teenage Cancer Trus units. A range of psychosocial topics were explored, including ratio of staff providing support to patients; facilities provided for children and families; psychosocial support services such as support groups; information provision; and transition support. Results: There were many good areas of support provided by centres, but there was also a lack of standard practices and procedures. All centres employed social workers, play specialists, and paediatric oncology outreach nurses, but patient to staff ratios varied across centres. The poorest staff provision was among psychologists, where patient to staff ratios ranged from 132:1 to 1100:1. Written information was standard practice, while provision of other types of information (audiovisual, online) varied; none of the centres provided audio information specifically for children/young people. Conclusion: This variability in practices among centres frequently occurred, as centres rarely had procedures formally agreed or recorded in writing. British government policy currently seeks to develop standards and guidelines of care throughout the National Health Service. This study further demonstrates the importance of standards and the need to agree guidelines for the provision of psychosocial support for children/young people and their families throughout the course of the illness
Development of a multimodal imaging probe for detecting aggressive prostate cancer
This thesis reports on the synthesis, development and validation of a novel, non-toxic dual modal bio-imaging probe that targets a conformational molecular switch and relocalisation of cell surface Endo180 into endosomes that occurs during the early stages of aggressive prostate cancer.InP/ZnS quantum dots were synthesised using a successive heating methodology following the introduction of a cooling phase between the addition of ‘shelling’ precursors. Photoluminescent quantum yields following the synthesis of InP/ZnS (2) quantum dots are reported at 85.30% in hexane and 57% in water (following phase transfer).An OI/MR dual-modal imaging probe was successfully synthesised following the surface modification of InP/ZnS (2) – TGA with Ln(III) DOTA chelate derivative (Ln = Gd, Eu and Tb). Up to 190 Gd(III) chelates were added to the surface of InP/ZnS (2) – TGA resulting in a combined r1 value of 1609.94 mM-1s-1 (InP/ZnS (2) – Gd.5a) when InP/ZnS (2) is synthesised with InI3. High values of photoluminescent quantum yield were achieved of up to 19.9% (InP/ZnS (2) – Gd.5.b) with no shift in emission properties observed following surface functionalisation when compared to InP/ZnS (2) – TGA.A targeted dual modal OI/MR imaging probe for the early detection of aggressive prostate cancer has been developed, via a two-step surface modification of InP/ZnS (2) – TGA with Endo180 conformational specific antibodies (A5.158, 39.10) and Gd(III) chelate (Gd.5a).Work presented in chapter 2 has formed part of the publication, Clarke, M. The noise policy statement for England : significance, application and implications
The Noise Policy Statement for England, published by Defra in March 2010, describes a ‘policy vision to facilitate decisions regarding what is an acceptable noise burden to place on society’. The publication of the NPSE coincided with the formal adoption and publication of the Noise Action Plans as required by the Environmental Noise (England) Regulations 2006 (as amended) and the Environmental Noise Directive . However, the potential implications of the NPSE go much wider, and as this article shows, it may well turn out to have a considerable impact on the work of many members of the Institute of Acoustics

Clinical features of a novel TIMP-3 mutation causing Sorsby's fundus dystrophy: implications for disease mechanism
AIMS: To describe the phenotype in three family members affected by a novel mutation in the gene coding for the enzyme tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP-3).
METHODS: Three members of the same family were seen with a history of nyctalopia and visual loss due to maculopathy. Clinical features were consistent with Sorsby's fundus dystrophy. Exon 5 of the gene coding for TIMP-3 was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction, single strand conformation polymorphism analysis undertaken and exon 5 amplicons were directly sequenced.
RESULTS: Onset of symptoms was in the third to fourth decade. Five of six eyes had geographic macular atrophy rather than neovascularisation as a cause for central visual loss. Peripheral retinal pigmentary disturbances were present. Scotopic ERGs were abnormal in all three. Mutation analysis showed a GT transversion in all three resulting in a premature termination codon, E139X, deleting most of the carboxy terminal domain of TIMP-3.
CONCLUSIONS: The patients described had a form of Sorsby's fundus dystrophy which fell at the severe end of the spectrum of this disease. Postulated disease mechanisms include deposition of dimerised TIMP-3 protein
A modern approach to the Heckel Equation: The effect of compaction pressure on the yield pressure of ibuprofen and its sodium salt
Despite being heavily criticised in the literature the most widely used and accepted compaction equation is the Heckel equation proposed by Heckel in 1961. Its presence in literature for 55 years is due to the ease in which it can distinguish between plastic and brittle materials. Achieving the correct balance of plastic and brittle materials in a formulation is critical to ensure adequate tablet strength is achieved therefore classifying materials using the Heckel equation is attractive. Despite the importance of this understanding, especially in the design and manufacture of direct compression formulations, there are no set analytical testing standards or materials classification guidelines. Instead many workers have attempted to develop techniques for the measurement and classification of a materials deformation but there is still confusion and contradiction present in this field. In this study we repot on report the effect of compaction pressure on the yield pressure of ibuprofen and its sodium salt. Ibuprofen and its sodium salt were selected as models for study due to the availability of comparative literature yield pressure values. The reported variation in yield pressure can be significant e.g, ibuprofen which has literature values of 21-1139 MPa. This study proposes an approach to determine yield pressure from the Heckel equation using a linear regression method. The full linear regression methodology utilised is described and is used to report the yield pressure of ibuprofen and its sodium salt dihydrate. This technique reveals the most representative compaction pressure in order to derive yield pressure to be 121 MPa. The yield pressure of ibuprofen and its sodium salt have been shown to increase with increasing compaction pressure. The reported values lie between 52-78 MPa for ibuprofen and 48-75 MPa for ibuprofen sodium dihydrate. The slightly lower reported yield pressure values for ibuprofen sodium suggest increased plasticity which could be attributed to the water contained within the structure acting as a plasticiser

High-Speed, Compact, Adaptive Lenses Using In-Line Transparent Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Membranes
Electrically tunable adaptive lenses provide several advantages over traditional lens assemblies in terms of compactness, speed, efficiency, and flexibility. We present an elastomer-liquid lens system which makes use of an in-line, transparent electroactive polymer actuator. The lens has two liquid-filled cavities enclosed within two frames, with two passive outer elastomer membranes and an internal transparent electroactive membrane. Advantages of the lens design over existing systems include large apertures, flexibility in choosing the starting lens curvature, and electrode encapsulation with a dielectric liquid. A lens power change up to 40 diopters, corresponding to focal length variation up to 300%, was recorded during actuation, with a response time on the order of tens of milliseconds.Engineering and Applied Science
