Liquid Crystal-Solid Interface Structure at the Antiferroelectric-Ferroelectric Phase Transition
Total Internal Reflection (TIR) is used to probe the molecular organization
at the surface of a tilted chiral smectic liquid crystal at temperatures in the
vicinity of the bulk antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition. Data are
interpreted using an exact analytical solution of a real model for
ferroelectric order at the surface. In the mixture T3, ferroelectric surface
order is expelled with the bulk ferroelectric-antiferroelectric transition. The
conditions for ferroelectric order at the surface of an antiferroelectric bulk
are presented
Non-topological Domain Walls in a Model with Broken Supersymmetry
We study non-topological, charged planar walls (Q-walls) in the context of a
particle physics model with supersymmetry broken by low-energy gauge mediation.
Analytical properties are derived within the flat-potential approximation for
the flat-direction raising potential, while a numerical study is performed
using the full two-loop supersymmetric potential. We analyze the energetics of
finite-size Q-walls and compare them to Q-balls, non-topological solitons
possessing spherical symmetry and arising in the same supersymmetric model.
This allow us to draw a phase diagram in the charge-transverse length plane,
which shows a region where Q-wall solutions are more stable than Q-balls.Comment: Some discussion about the phase diagram added. To appear on the

Fiber optic coherent laser radar 3d vision system
Recent advances in fiber optic component technology and digital processing components have enabled the development of a new 3D vision system based upon a fiber optic FMCW coherent laser radar. The approach includes a compact scanner with no moving parts capable of randomly addressing all pixels. The system maintains the immunity to lighting and surface shading conditions which is characteristic of coherent laser radar. The random pixel addressability allows concentration of scanning and processing on the active areas of a scene, as is done by the human eye-brain system
In medium T matrix for neutron matter
We calculate the equation of state of pure neutron matter, comparing the
G-matrix calculation with the in-medium T-matrix result. At low densities, we
obtain similar energies per nucleon, however some differences appear at higher
densities. We use the self-consistent spectral functions from the T-matrix
approach to calculate the 1S0 superfluid gap including self-energy effects. We
find a reduction of the superfluid gap by 30%
Enabling a High Throughput Real Time Data Pipeline for a Large Radio Telescope Array with GPUs
The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a next-generation radio telescope
currently under construction in the remote Western Australia Outback. Raw data
will be generated continuously at 5GiB/s, grouped into 8s cadences. This high
throughput motivates the development of on-site, real time processing and
reduction in preference to archiving, transport and off-line processing. Each
batch of 8s data must be completely reduced before the next batch arrives.
Maintaining real time operation will require a sustained performance of around
2.5TFLOP/s (including convolutions, FFTs, interpolations and matrix
multiplications). We describe a scalable heterogeneous computing pipeline
implementation, exploiting both the high computing density and FLOP-per-Watt
ratio of modern GPUs. The architecture is highly parallel within and across
nodes, with all major processing elements performed by GPUs. Necessary
scatter-gather operations along the pipeline are loosely synchronized between
the nodes hosting the GPUs. The MWA will be a frontier scientific instrument
and a pathfinder for planned peta- and exascale facilities.Comment: Version accepted by Comp. Phys. Com
Effects of oxytocin on attention to emotional faces in healthy volunteers and highly socially anxious males
Background: Evidence suggests that individuals with social anxiety demonstrate vigilance to social threat, whilst the peptide hormone oxytocin is widely accepted as supporting affiliative behaviour in humans. Methods: This study investigated whether oxytocin can affect attentional bias in social anxiety. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, within-group study design, 26 healthy and 16 highly socially anxious (HSA) male volunteers (within the HSA group, 10 were diagnosed with generalized social anxiety disorder) were administered 24 IU of oxytocin or placebo to investigate attentional processing in social anxiety. Attentional bias was assessed using the dot-probe paradigm with angry, fearful, happy and neutral face stimuli. Results: In the baseline placebo condition, the HSA group showed greater attentional bias for emotional faces than healthy individuals. Oxytocin reduced the difference between HSA and non-socially anxious individuals in attentional bias for emotional faces. Moreover, it appeared to normalize attentional bias in HSA individuals to levels seen in the healthy population in the baseline condition. The biological mechanisms by which oxytocin may be exerting these effects are discussed. Conclusions: These results, coupled with previous research, could indicate a potential therapeutic use of this hormone in treatment for social anxiety
Integrating Communication Skills and Planning Techniques
Practitioners have long stressed the need to teach professional commumcations skills to planning students. This paper describes ten years of experience in teaching a course in which communications skills and techniques of gathering and analyzing information are taught concurrently while investigating a problem of importance in the community.
