We extend a model of the economic and ecological systems in coastal New England by incorporating an aquaculture sector in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and by examining the forage fish and aquaculture link in a marine food web. We show that aquaculture and commercial fisheries interact in a complex way throughout the economic and ecological systems. This work was supported by the NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program (Award No. NA09NMF4270097), the MIT Sea Grant College Program (NOAA Award No. NA10OAR4170086, Subaward No. 5710002974), and the Johnson Endowment of the WHOI Marine Policy Center.2013-06-0

    Null Deformed Domain Wall

We study null 1/4 BPS deformations of flat domain wall solutions (NDDW) in N=2, d=5 gauged supergravity with hypermultiplets and vector multiplets coupled. These are uncharged time-dependent configurations and contain as special case, 1/2 supersymmetric flat domain walls (DW), as well as 1/2 BPS null solutions of the ungauged supergravity. Combining our analysis with the classification method initiated by Gauntlett et al., we prove that all the possible deformations of the DW have origin in the hypermultiplet sector or/and are null. Here, we classify all the null deformations: we show that they naturally organize themselves into "gauging" (v-deformation) and "non gauging" (u-deformation). They have different properties: only in presence of v-deformation is the solution supported by a time-dependent scalar potential. Furthermore we show that the number of possible deformations equals the number of matter multiplets coupled. We discuss the general procedure for constructing explicit solutions, stressing the crucial role taken by the integrability conditions of the scalars as spacetime functions. Two analytical solutions are presented. Finally, we comment on the holographic applications of the NDDW, in relation to the recently proposed time-dependent AdS/CFT.Comment: 38 pages; minor changes, references added; text revised, minor changes, final version published in JHE

Serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein and clinical signs and symptoms of potential pre-radiographic hip and knee pathology

OBJECTIVE: To examine the cross-sectional relationship between serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) and hip and knee clinical signs and symptoms in a sample of adults without radiographic hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). DESIGN: A total of 145 persons with available sera and no evidence of radiographic hip or knee OA (Kellgren-Lawrence grade 0) were randomly selected from the Caucasian participants of the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project. COMP was quantified by a competitive ELISA assay with a monoclonal antibody 17-C10. Hip and knee clinical signs and symptoms were assessed by physical examination and interview, and their associations with Ln COMP analysed with general linear models. RESULTS: After adjustment for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and other symptomatic joints, mean Ln COMP was statistically significantly higher among persons with hip-related clinical signs (P=0.018), among those with hip-related symptoms (P=0.046), and among individuals meeting American College of Rheumatology clinical criteria for hip OA (P=0.021). There were no statistically significant associations between any of the knee-related clinical signs and symptoms and Ln COMP. CONCLUSION: Serum COMP may be useful as a biomarker of pre-radiographic hip joint pathology; its utility as a biomarker of pre-radiographic knee joint pathology is unclear

Extracting Spatial Information from Noise Measurements of Multi-Spatial-Mode Quantum States

We show that it is possible to use the spatial quantum correlations present in twin beams to extract information about the shape of a mask in the path of one of the beams. The scheme, based on noise measurements through homodyne detection, is useful in the regime where the number of photons is low enough that direct detection with a photodiode is difficult but high enough that photon counting is not an option. We find that under some conditions the use of quantum states of light leads to an enhancement of the sensitivity in the estimation of the shape of the mask over what can be achieved with a classical state with equivalent properties (mean photon flux and noise properties). In addition, we show that the level of enhancement that is obtained is a result of the quantum correlations and cannot be explained with only classical correlations

B-1a cells acquire their unique characteristics by bypassing the pre-BCR selection stage

B-1a cells are long-lived, self-renewing innate-like B cells that predominantly inhabit the peritoneal and pleural cavities. In contrast to conventional B-2 cells, B-1a cells have a receptor repertoire that is biased towards bacterial and self-antigens, promoting a rapid response to infection and clearing of apoptotic cells. Although B-1a cells are known to primarily originate from fetal tissues, the mechanisms by which they arise has been a topic of debate for many years. Here we show that in the fetal liver versus bone marrow environment, reduced IL-7R/STAT5 levels promote immunoglobulin kappa gene recombination at the early pro-B cell stage. As a result, differentiating B cells can directly generate a mature B cell receptor (BCR) and bypass the requirement for a pre-BCR and pairing with surrogate light chain. This 'alternate pathway' of development enables the production of B cells with self-reactive, skewed specificity receptors that are peculiar to the B-1a compartment. Together our findings connect seemingly opposing lineage and selection models of B-1a cell development and explain how these cells acquire their unique properties

V.I. Vernadsky and the noosphere concept: Russian understandings of society-nature interaction

    Get PDF
Recent Russian legislative and policy documentation concerning national progress towards sustainable development has suggested that the attainment of such a state would represent the first stage in the development of the noosphere as outlined by the Russian scientist Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky (1863–1945). This paper explores Vernadsky’s model of evolutionary change through a focus on his work on the biosphere and noosphere in an attempt to further understanding of the way in which Russia is approaching the concept of sustainable development in the contemporary period. It is argued that the official Russian interpretation of the noosphere idea tends to obscure the evolutionary and materialist foundations of Vernadsky’s biosphere–noosphere conceptualisation. At the same time, the concluding section of the paper suggests that the scope of Vernadsky’s work can be used to stimulate the search for a more coherent approach to work in areas of sustainable development and sustainability across the span of the social and physical sciences

Does Media Affect Learning: Where Are We Now?

It is time to extinguish the argument as to whether or not the media of 1983 could, should or would affect learning outcomes. The technological advances that have occurred in the 20 years since Clark sparked the debate and Kozma fanned the flames have made the question irrelevant. High-speed, portable, reasonably priced computers, the Internet, and the World Wide Web have changed the face of how, when, and where learning occurs. The media of 2004 does affect learning. The question is no longer if; the question is how
