Unusual ferrimagnetism in CaFe2O4
Incomplete cancellation of collinear antiparallel spins gives rise to
ferrimagnetism. Even if the oppositely polarized spins are owing to the equal
number of a single magnetic element having the same valence state, in
principle, a ferrimagnetic state can still arise from the crystallographic
inequivalence of the host ions. However, experimental identification of such a
state as ferrimagnetic is not straightforward because of the tiny magnitude
expected for M and the requirement for a sophisticated technique to
differentiate similar magnetic sites. We report a synchrotron-based resonant
x-ray investigation at the Fe L2,3 edges on an epitaxial film of CaFe2O4, which
exhibits two magnetic phases with similar energies. We find that while one
phase of CaFe2O4 is antiferromagnetic, the other one is ferrimagnetic with an
antiparallel arrangement of an equal number of spins between two distinct
crystallographic sites with very similar local coordination environments. Our
results further indicate two distinct origins of an overall minute M; one is
intrinsic, from distinct Fe3+ sites, and the other one is extrinsic, arising
from defective Fe2+ likely forming weakly-coupled ferrimagnetic clusters. These
two origins are uncorrelated and have very different coercive fields. Hence,
this work provides a direct experimental demonstration of ferrimagnetism solely
due to crystallographic inequivalence of the Fe3+ as the origin of the weak M
of CaFe2O4.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
Ion-polaron interaction in modified tellurite glasses
Glasses formed by different oxides are of uppermost importance because they aredeveloped for many applications in electronics, optics, biology, etc. Oxide glasses are built by a three-dimensional network of corner connected oxygen polyhedral that can be modified by the inclusion of other oxides such as transition metal oxides. In this work, the polaron conductivity due to the presence of transition metal oxides in tellurite glasses is analyzed in systems containing alkaline (AO) and alkaline earth oxides (AEO). It is explained how the presence of metal cations (AO or AEO) affects the displacement of the polaron through the network due to the ion-polaron interaction.Fil: Hernandez Garcia, Luis Ancizar. Intracellular Streptococcus pneumoniae develops enhanced fluoroquinolone persistence during influenza A coinfection
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major pathogen responsible for severe complications in patients with prior influenza A virus (IAV) infection. We have previously demonstrated that S. pneumoniae exhibits increased intracellular survival within IAV-infected cells. Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are widely used to treat pneumococcal infections. However, our prior work has shown that S. pneumoniae can develop intracellular FQ persistence, a phenomenon triggered by oxidative stress within host cells. This persistence allows the bacteria to withstand high FQ concentrations. In this study, we show that IAV infection enhances pneumococcal FQ persistence during intracellular survival within pneumocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. This enhancement is partly due to increased oxidative stress induced by the viral infection. We find that this phenotype is particularly pronounced in autophagy-proficient host cells, potentially resulting from IAV-induced blockage of autophagosome-lysosome fusion. Moreover, we identified several S. pneumoniae genes involved in oxidative stress response that contribute to FQ persistence, including sodA (superoxide dismutase), clpL (chaperone), nrdH (glutaredoxin), and psaB (Mn+2 transporter component). Our findings reveal a novel mechanism of antibiotic persistence promoted by viral infection within host cells. This underscores the importance of considering this phenomenon when using FQs to treat pneumococcal infections, especially in patients with concurrent influenza A infection

Stages of change: Strategies to promote use of a Pediatric Early Warning System in resource-limited pediatric oncology centers.
BackgroundPediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) assist early detection of clinical deterioration in hospitalized children with cancer. Relevant to successful PEWS implementation, the stages of change model characterizes stakeholder support for PEWS based on willingness and effort to adopt the new practice.MethodsAt five resource-limited pediatric oncology centers in Latin America, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 71 hospital staff involved in PEWS implementation. Purposive sampling was used to select centers requiring variable time to complete PEWS implementation, with low-barrier centers (3-4 months) and high-barrier centers (10-11 months). Interviews were conducted in Spanish, professionally transcribed, and translated into English. Thematic content analysis explored stage of change with constant comparative analysis across stakeholder types and study sites.ResultsParticipants identified six interventions (training, incentives, participation, evidence, persuasion, and modeling) and two policies (environmental planning and mandates) as effective strategies used by implementation leaders to promote stakeholder progression through stages of change. Key approaches involved presentation of evidence demonstrating PEWS effectiveness, persuasion and incentives addressing specific stakeholder interests, enthusiastic individuals serving as models for others, and policies enforced by hospital directors facilitating habitual PEWS use. Effective engagement targeted hospital directors during early implementation phases to provide programmatic legitimacy for clinical staff.ConclusionThis study identifies strategies to promote adoption and maintained use of PEWS, highlighting the importance of tailoring implementation strategies to the motivations of each stakeholder type. These findings can guide efforts to implement PEWS and other evidence-based practices that improve childhood cancer outcomes in resource-limited hospitals
Impact of hospital characteristics on implementation of a Pediatric Early Warning System in resource-limited cancer hospitals
BackgroundPediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) aid in identification of deterioration in hospitalized children with cancer but are underutilized in resource-limited settings. Proyecto EVAT is a multicenter quality improvement (QI) collaborative in Latin America to implement PEWS. This study investigates the relationship between hospital characteristics and time required for PEWS implementation.MethodsThis convergent mixed-methods study included 23 Proyecto EVAT childhood cancer centers; 5 hospitals representing quick and slow implementers were selected for qualitative analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 71 stakeholders involved in PEWS implementation. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and translated to English, then coded using a priori and novel codes. Thematic content analysis explored the impact of hospital characteristics and QI experience on time required for PEWS implementation and was supplemented by quantitative analysis exploring the relationship between hospital characteristics and implementation time.ResultsIn both quantitative and qualitative analysis, material and human resources to support PEWS significantly impacted time to implementation. Lack of resources produced various obstacles that extended time necessary for centers to achieve successful implementation. Hospital characteristics, such as funding structure and type, influenced PEWS implementation time by determining their resource-availability. Prior hospital or implementation leader experience with QI, however, helped facilitate implementation by assisting implementers predict and overcome resource-related challenges.ConclusionsHospital characteristics impact time required to implement PEWS in resource-limited childhood cancer centers; however, prior QI experience helps anticipate and adapt to resource challenges and more quickly implement PEWS. QI training should be a component of strategies to scale-up use of evidence-based interventions like PEWS in resource-limited settings
