    Negotiating public history in the Republic of Ireland: collaborative, applied and usable practices for the profession

    Since the nineteen-seventies public history has emerged as an increasingly coherent discipline in North America, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K. and, latterly, in a wider European context. In all of these places it has had a connected but distinctly different gestation, and the nature of how history is applied, constructed, proffered or sold for public consumption is unique to each society. In Ireland, and within the history profession connected to it, its meaning is yet to be fully explored. Recent talks, symposia and conferences have established the term in the public imagination. As it is presently conceived public history in Ireland either relates specifically to commemorative events and the effect historians might have on official discourse relating to them, or to a series of controversial and contested historiographical debates. This article, by contrast, seeks a wider, more inclusive definition that includes the ‘public’ as an actor in it

    Assessing the ecological impacts of invasive species based on their functional responses and abundances

    Invasive species management requires allocation of limited resources towards the proactive mitigation of those species that could elicit the highest ecological impacts. However, we lack predictive capacity with respect to the identities and degree of ecological impacts of invasive species. Here, we combine the relative per capita effects and relative field abundances of invader as compared to native species into a new metric, “Relative Impact Potential” (RIP), and test whether this metric can reliably predict high impact invaders. This metric tests the impact of invaders relative to the baseline impacts of natives on the broader ecological community. We first derived the functional responses (i.e. per capita effects) of two ecologically damaging invasive fish species in Europe, the Ponto-Caspian round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and Asian topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva), and their native trophic analogues, the bullhead (Cottus gobio; also C. bairdi) and bitterling (Rhodeus amarus), towards several prey species. This establishes the existence and relative strengths of the predator-prey relationships. Then, we derived ecologically comparable field abundance estimates of the invader and native fish from surveys and literature. This establishes the multipliers for the above per capita effects. Despite both predators having known severe detrimental field impacts, their functional responses alone were of modest predictive power in this regard; however, incorporation of their abundances relative to natives into the RIP metric gave high predictive power. We present invader/native RIP biplots that provide an intuitive visualisation of comparisons among the invasive and native species, reflecting the known broad ecological impacts of the invaders. Thus, we provide a mechanistic understanding of invasive species impacts and a predictive tool for use by practitioners, for example, in risk assessments

Se propone discutir la educación irlandesa en el contexto de las tendencias globales en el mundo cosmopolita y de élite formas en la educación. En toda Europa se encuentran a los jesuitas compitiendo por élites y subelites regionales en este período, y los jesuitas irlandeses son parte de este patrón transnacional. Para ello, la investigación se enfoca en las dos fundaciones más importantes del siglo XIX –Tullabeg (1818-86) y Clongowes (1814 -) - como los internados jesuitas ejemplares de «élite» en Irlanda. Luego se discutirán brevemente dos temas menos sociales como las escuelas diurnas ascendentes.ES

    Income inequality in uptake of voluntary versus organised breast cancer screening: evidence from the british household panel survey

    Background: This paper measures income-related inequality in uptake of breast cancer screening among women before and after a policy change to extend the screening programme to women aged 65 to 70. Prior to programme expansion women aged 50 to 64 were invited for screening under the national cancer screening programme in England and Wales whereas women in the 65 to 70 age cohort could elect to be screened by personally organising a screen. This will give a deeper insight into the nature of inequality in screening and the impact of policies aimed at widening the access related to age on inequality of uptake. Methods: Taking advantage of this natural experiment, inequality is quantified across the different age cohorts and time periods with the use of concentration indices (CI). Using data from the British Household Panel Survey, information on screening attendance, equivalised household income and age was taken for the three years prior to the programme expansion and the three years immediately following the policy change. Results: Results show that following the expansion, inequality significantly reduced for the 50-64 age group, prior to the expansion there was a pro-rich inequality in screening uptake. There is also evidence of a reduction in income inequality in screening uptake among those aged 65 to 70 and an increase in the number of women attending screening from this older age cohort. Conclusions: This indicates that an organised breast screening programme is likely to reduce income related inequality over a screening programme where women must organise their own screen. This is important when breast screening is one of the main methods used to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage which improves outcomes for women and reduces treatment costs

    A comparative examination of healthcare use related to hearing impairment in Europe

    Introduction: The economic burden of hearing impairment is an area of increased interest. In this paper we examine the relationship between hearing impairment and service use in 14 European countries. Methods: Based on the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) undertaken in 2013, Poisson regression models are used to analyse the relationship between the number of visits/number of nights in hospital, and hearing impairment controlling for a number of covariates. Results: We find that hearing impairment is generally associated with increased use of primary and secondary healthcare services when other aspects of health have been controlled. Comparative analysis revealed that where access to hearing assistive technology was greatest the additional use of services was least. Conclusions: The comparative analysis suggests that variations exist across countries in respect of the additional healthcare use occasioned by hearing impairment. They may also provide valuable insights into how the burden of illness might be reduced
