In the crystal structure of the title compound, [Co(C8H3NO6)(C10H8N2)(H2O)]n, there are two symmetry-independent one-dimensional coordination polymers, which are approximately related by noncrystallographic inversion symmetry. Each zigzag chain is constructed from one CoII ion, one O-monodentate 5-nitroisophthalate (ndc) dianion, one N,N′-bidentate 2,2′-bipyridyl ligand and one water molecule. A symmetry-generated O,O′-bidentate ndc dianion completes the cobalt coordination environment, which could be described as very distorted cis-CoN2O4 octahedral. The bridging ndc ligands result in parallel chains running along the a direction, and O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds arising from the water molecules complete the structure

White matter microstructure alterations in idiopathic restless legs syndrome: a study combining crossing fiber-based and tensor-based approaches

IntroductionRestless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensorimotor disorder characterized by an irrepressible urge to move the legs and frequently accompanied by unpleasant sensations in the legs. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying RLS remain unclear, and RLS is hypothesized to be associated with alterations in white matter tracts.MethodsDiffusion MRI is a unique noninvasive method widely used to study white matter tracts in the human brain. Thus, diffusion-weighted images were acquired from 18 idiopathic RLS patients and 31 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). Whole brain tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and atlas-based analyzes combining crossing fiber-based metrics and tensor-based metrics were performed to investigate the white matter patterns in individuals with RLS.ResultsTBSS analysis revealed significantly higher fractional anisotropy (FA) and partial volume fraction of primary (F1) fiber populations in multiple tracts associated with the sensorimotor network in patients with RLS than in HCs. In the atlas based analysis, the bilateral anterior thalamus radiation, bilateral corticospinal tract, bilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, left hippocampal cingulum, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, and left uncinate fasciculus showed significantl increased F1, but only the left hippocampal cingulum showed significantly higher FA.DiscussionThe results demonstrated that F1 identified extensive alterations in white matter tracts compared with FA and confirmed the hypothesis that crossing fiber-based metrics are more sensitive than tensor-based metrics in detecting white matter abnormalities in RLS. The present findings provide evidence that the increased F1 metric observed in sensorimotor tracts may be a critical neural substrate of RLS, enhancing our understanding of the underlying pathological changes

In the title compound, [Ni(C8H3NO6)(C10H8N2)(H2O)3]·H2O, the NiII cation is six-coordinated by a chelating 2,2′-bipyridine ligand, one carboxylate O atom from a 5-nitroisophthalate dianion and three water molecules, with a slightly distorted cis-NiN2O4 octahedral geometry. The neutral complex is isolated, in contrast to coordination polymers formed by MnII, CoII and CuII with the same ligand set, but forms an extensive network of O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the coordinated and uncoordinated water molecules and carboxylate groups of the 5-nitroisophthalate ions

ObjectiveThe safety results of different recommended doses of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remain uncertain. This study aims to comprehensively estimate and rank the relative safety outcomes with different doses of SGLT-2i for T2DM.MethodsPubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ClinicalTrials.gov, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang database, and SinoMed database were searched from the inception to 31 May 2023. We included double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SGLT-2i with placebo or another antihyperglycemic as oral monotherapy in the adults with a diagnosis of T2DM.ResultsTwenty-five RCTs with 12,990 patients randomly assigned to 10 pharmacological interventions and placebo were included. Regarding genital infections (GI), all SGLT-2i, except for ertugliflozin and ipragliflozin, were associated with a higher risk of GI compared to placebo. Empagliflozin 10mg/d (88.2%, odds ratio [OR] 7.90, 95% credible interval [CrI] 3.39 to 22.08) may be the riskiest, followed by empagliflozin 25mg/d (83.4%, OR 7.22, 95%CrI 3.11 to 20.04)) and canagliflozin 300mg/d (70.8%, OR 5.33, 95%CrI 2.25 to 13.83) based on probability rankings. Additionally, dapagliflozin 10mg/d ranked highest for urinary tract infections (UTI, OR 2.11, 95%CrI 1.20 to 3.79, 87.2%), renal impairment (80.7%), and nasopharyngitis (81.6%) when compared to placebo and other treatments. No increased risk of harm was observed with different doses of SGLT-2i regarding hypoglycemia, acute kidney injury, diabetic ketoacidosis, or fracture. Further subgroup analysis by gender revealed no significantly increased risk of UTI. Dapagliflozin 10mg/d (91.9%) and canagliflozin 300mg/d (88.8%) ranked first in the female and male subgroups, respectively, according to the probability rankings for GI.ConclusionCurrent evidence indicated that SGLT-2i did not significantly increase the risk of harm when comparing different doses, except for dapagliflozin 10mg/d, which showed an increased risk of UTI and may be associated with a higher risk of renal impairment and nasopharyngitis. Additionally, compared with placebo and metformin, the risk of GI was notably elevated for empagliflozin 10mg/d, canagliflozin 300mg/d, and dapagliflozin 10mg/d. However, it is important to note that further well-designed RCTs with larger sample sizes are necessary to verify and optimize the current body of evidence.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/, identifier CRD42023396023

Protective effects of ferulic acid against ionizing radiation-induced oxidative damage in rat lens through activating Nrf2 signal pathway

AIM: To examine the protection of ferulic acid (FA) against ionizing radiation (IR)-induced lens injury in rats, as well as the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: FA (50 mg/kg) was administered to rats for 4 consecutive days before they were given 10 Gy γ-radiation, as well as for 3 consecutive days afterward. Two weeks after radiation, the eye tissues were collected. Histological alterations were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was utilized to assess the activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as the levels of glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the lenses. The protein and mRNA levels of Bcl-2, caspase-3, Bax, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) were quantified using Western blot and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, respectively. With nuclear extracts, the nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor (Nrf2) protein expressions in the nuclei were also measured. RESULTS: Rats exposed to IR showed lens histological alterations which could be alleviated by FA. FA treatment reversed apoptosis-related markers in IR-induced lens, as evidenced by lower levels of Bax and caspase-3 and higher level of Bcl-2. Furthermore, IR induced oxidative damage manifested by decreased GSH level, increased MDA level, and decreased SOD and GR activities. FA boosted nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and increased the expressions of HO-1 and GCLC to inhibit oxidative stress, as evidenced by an increase in GSH, a decrease in MDA, and an increase in GR and SOD activities. CONCLUSION: FA may work well in preventing and treating IR-induced cataract through promoting the Nrf2 signal pathway to attenuate oxidative damage and cell apoptosis

The model results suggest that isolated low salinity water lens detected west of Cheju Island can be formed by (1) a large-scale adjustment of the flow field to the Changjiang discharge and (2) the detachment of anticyclonic eddies as a result of baroclinic instability of the CDW front. Adding the Changjiang discharge intensifies the clockwise vorticity of the subsurface current (originating from the Taiwan Warm Current) flowing along the 50-m isobath and thus drives the low-salinity water in the northern coastal area of the Changjiang mouth offshore over a submerged plateau that extends toward Cheju Island. Given a model horizontal resolution of less than 1.0 km, the CDW front becomes baroclinically unstable and forms a chain of anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies. The offshore detachment of anticyclonic eddies can carry the CDW offshore. This process is enhanced under northward winds as a result of the spatially nonuniform interaction of wind-induced Ekman flow and eddy-generated frontal density currents. Characteristics of the model-predicted eddy field are consistent with previous theoretical studies of baroclinic instability of buoyancy-driven coastal density currents and existing satellite imagery. The plume stability is controlled by the horizontal Ekman number. In the Changjiang, this number is much smaller than the criterion suggested by a theoretical analysis. The development of FVCOM is supported by the Massachusetts Fisheries Institute through NOAA grants DOC/ NOAA/NA04NMF4720332 and DOC/NOAA/NA05NMF4721131 and also the U.S. GLOBEC Northwest Atlantic/Georges Bank program through NSF grants OCE-0234545 and OCE-0227679, NOAA grant NA160P2323 and ONR subcontract grant from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
