Get PDF
With currently over one billion monthly active users, the Chinese social media and multipurpose application WeChat (, Wēixìn, micro-message) has become one of the world’s most popular social media platforms. Despite its enormous number of users in Asia, WeChat is still not well known in Western countries. Against this background, the present review aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview on the functionality of this application, comparison with other popular applications such as Facebook/WhatsApp and previous research. Although WeChat has become an integral part of everyday life for many users, research has only recently begun to examine the impact of this development on the societal and individual levels. The present review summarizes the literature on this topic with a focus on the motives to engage in using the app and potential detrimental effects of excessive use. In the context of the growing popularity and increasing usage times of the app – in particular in Asian countries – future research seems warranted to examine systematically how social media platforms such as WeChat will affect interpersonal communication behavior, well-being, and mental health. The direct comparison of WeChat’s influence on the mentioned variables compared with its competitors Facebook and WhatsApp often used in Western countries will also be of high importance

Tooth loss and the risk of cognitive decline and dementia: A meta-analysis of cohort studies

IntroductionEpidemiological studies have shown that tooth loss may be associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. However, some results do not show a significant association. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate this association.MethodsRelevant cohort studies were searched in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (up to May 2022), and the reference lists of retrieved articles. The pooled relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals were computed using a random-effects model (CI). Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic. Publication bias was evaluated using the Begg's and Egger's tests.ResultsEighteen cohort studies met the inclusion criteria. Original studies with 356,297 participants with an average follow-up of 8.6 years (ranging from 2 to 20 years) were included in this study. The pooled RRs of tooth loss on dementia and cognitive decline were 1.15 (95% CI: 1.10–1.20; P < 0.01, I2 = 67.4%) and 1.20 (95% CI: 1.14–1.26; P = 0.04, I2 = 42.3%), respectively. The results of the subgroup analysis showed an increased association between tooth loss and Alzheimer's disease (AD) (RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02–1.23) and vascular dementia (VaD) (RR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.06–1.47). The results of the subgroup analysis also showed that pooled RRs varied by geographic location, sex, use of dentures, number of teeth or edentulous status, dental assessment, and follow-up duration. None of the Begg's and Egger's tests or funnel plots showed evidence of publication bias.DiscussionTooth loss is associated with a significantly increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia, suggesting that adequate natural teeth are important for cognitive function in older adults. The likely mechanisms mostly suggested include nutrition, inflammation, and neural feedback, especially deficiency of several nutrients like vitamin D

Enhanced sensitivity of neutralizing antibody detection for different AAV serotypes using HeLa cells with overexpressed AAVR

A cell-based transduction inhibition assay (TI) is widely used in clinical trials to detect neutralizing antibody (NAb) titers against recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV), one of the most important criteria to exclude patients in gene therapy. Different cell lines are used in cell-based TI because the rAAV transduction efficiencies vary largely among serotypes. A cell line suitable for TI for most serotypes is highly desirable, especially for those with very low transduction efficiencies in vitro such as rAAV8 and rAAV9. Herein, we report an AAVR-HeLa, a stable cell line with overexpressed AAVR, a newly identified receptor for rAAVs, was established for cell-based TIs. The AAVR expression level in AAVR-HeLa cells was approximately 10-fold higher than in HeLa cells, and was stably transfected after twenty three passages. For all AAV serotypes (AAV1-10), except for AAV4, the transduction efficiencies increased significantly in AAVR-HeLa cells. It was demonstrated that the AAVR enhancement of transduction efficiency was only for rAAV and not for lentiviral and adenoviral vectors. According to the minimal multiplicity of infection (MOIs) for the assay, the NAb detection sensitivity increased at least 10 and 20 fold for AAV8 and AAV9, respectively. The seroprevalence of NAbs were investigated at the 1:30 level as a cutoff value using AAVR-HeLa cells. It was shown that the seropositive rate for AAV2 was 87% in serum samples from 99 adults, followed by lower seropositive rates for AAV5 (7%), AAV8 (7%) and AAV9 (1%). Venn diagram analysis showed the presence of cross-reactivity of NAbs to two or three serotypes in 13 samples (13.1%). However, no patient was found to possess NAbs for all the four serotypes. These results demonstrated that the AAVR-HeLa cell line may be utilized to detect the NAbs through cell-based TI assays for most of AAV serotypes

The Impact of Use Context on Mobile Payment User Adoption: An Empirical Study in China

    Get PDF
The study aims to investigate the factors that affect users’ intention to adopt mobile payment services. Drawing upon the Technology Acceptance Model, the study integrates use context and subjective norm to put forward a theoretical model. 375 valid survey responses were collected. The results show that use context is the strongest predictor of intention to adopt mobile payment services. It has both direct and indirect effects on behavioral intention, and the indirect effects are mediated by perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Subjective norm and perceived ease of use significantly influence perceived usefulness. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed

Purpose: This study aims to explore factors affecting continuance intention of mobile reading.

Design/methodology/approach: Drawing on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), and integrating perceived enjoyment, we put forward a theoretical research model of factors affecting continuance intention of mobile reading. Using 186 valid data collected through a questionnaire survey, we conducted data analysis with the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings: The results show that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and perceived enjoyment all have positive impacts on continuance intention. Among them, perceived enjoyment has the most significant effect on continuance intention, followed by performance expectancy. In addition, effort expectancy significantly influences perceived enjoyment. Contrary to our expectation, facilitating conditions have no impact on continuance intention.

Practical implications: This study could help mobile data service providers to foster users' continuous usage of mobile reading.

Research limitations: This study focused only on the effect of perceived enjoyment as an internal motivation on continuance intention of mobile reading, and other possible factors were not considered. Also, continuance intention may be different from the actual behavior. Furthermore, data of student users was collected from one university in China, and was cross-sectional, while working samples were not considered.

Originality value: This study considers the effects of both external and internal motivation on continuance intention of mobile reading. The results highlight the role of perceived enjoyment in building users' continuance intention of mobile reading.Purpose: This study aims to explore factors affecting continuance intention of mobile reading.

Design/methodology/approach: Drawing on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), and integrating perceived enjoyment, we put forward a theoretical research model of factors affecting continuance intention of mobile reading.
