    Efficient Semidefinite Spectral Clustering via Lagrange Duality

    We propose an efficient approach to semidefinite spectral clustering (SSC), which addresses the Frobenius normalization with the positive semidefinite (p.s.d.) constraint for spectral clustering. Compared with the original Frobenius norm approximation based algorithm, the proposed algorithm can more accurately find the closest doubly stochastic approximation to the affinity matrix by considering the p.s.d. constraint. In this paper, SSC is formulated as a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In order to solve the high computational complexity of SDP, we present a dual algorithm based on the Lagrange dual formalization. Two versions of the proposed algorithm are proffered: one with less memory usage and the other with faster convergence rate. The proposed algorithm has much lower time complexity than that of the standard interior-point based SDP solvers. Experimental results on both UCI data sets and real-world image data sets demonstrate that 1) compared with the state-of-the-art spectral clustering methods, the proposed algorithm achieves better clustering performance; and 2) our algorithm is much more efficient and can solve larger-scale SSC problems than those standard interior-point SDP solvers.Comment: 13 page

    Developmental differences in the structure of executive function in middle childhood and adolescence

    Although it has been argued that the structure of executive function (EF) may change developmentally, there is little empirical research to examine this view in middle childhood and adolescence. The main objective of this study was to examine developmental changes in the component structure of EF in a large sample (N = 457) of 7–15 year olds. Participants completed batteries of tasks that measured three components of EF: updating working memory (UWM), inhibition, and shifting. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test five alternative models in 7–9 year olds, 10–12 year olds, and 13–15 year olds. The results of CFA showed that a single-factor EF model best explained EF performance in 7–9-year-old and 10–12-year-old groups, namely unitary EF, though this single factor explained different amounts of variance at these two ages. In contrast, a three-factor model that included UWM, inhibition, and shifting best accounted for the data from 13–15 year olds, namely diverse EF. In sum, during middle childhood, putative measures of UWM, inhibition, and shifting may rely on similar underlying cognitive processes. Importantly, our findings suggest that developmental dissociations in these three EF components do not emerge until children transition into adolescence. These findings provided empirical evidence for the development of EF structure which progressed from unity to diversity during middle childhood and adolescence

    The application of fractal dimension on capillary pressure curve to evaluate the tight sandstone

    The rock of gas tight reservoir is more heterogeneous than that of conventional sandstone reservoir and is more prone to water-blockage because of the invasion of operation fluid. This paper presented a new approach for the analysis of the capillary pressure curve for tight gas reservoir. Herein, the saturation equation with fractal dimension proved the previous observation that the log-log plot of capillary pressure against water saturation is a straight line, which is quite different from the popular observation by Corey’s correlation. How to transform the capillary pressure curve to relative permeability curve was also discussed with fractal dimension. The fractal dimension of capillary pressure, which is not only an indication of heterogeneity, can also reveal the potential water blocks in tight gas wells. If the rock has higher fractal dimension, being at the same water saturation, the capillary pressure will be higher and the relative permeability of water will be smaller, which means higher injection pressure is required to displace the trapped water in reservoir. It is suggested that for the tight gas pay zone with higher fractal dimension, more precautions should be taken to prevent the water trapping during drilling or stimulating operation

    From Plots to Endings: A Reinforced Pointer Generator for Story Ending Generation

    We introduce a new task named Story Ending Generation (SEG), whic-h aims at generating a coherent story ending from a sequence of story plot. Wepropose a framework consisting of a Generator and a Reward Manager for thistask. The Generator follows the pointer-generator network with coverage mech-anism to deal with out-of-vocabulary (OOV) and repetitive words. Moreover, amixed loss method is introduced to enable the Generator to produce story endingsof high semantic relevance with story plots. In the Reward Manager, the rewardis computed to fine-tune the Generator with policy-gradient reinforcement learn-ing (PGRL). We conduct experiments on the recently-introduced ROCStoriesCorpus. We evaluate our model in both automatic evaluation and human evalua-tion. Experimental results show that our model exceeds the sequence-to-sequencebaseline model by 15.75% and 13.57% in terms of CIDEr and consistency scorerespectively.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, NLPCC 201
