    COMPARISON BETWEEN EMG-ASSISTED AND EMG-ASSISTED OPTIMIZATION MODELS IN TERMS OF ESTIMATING LUMBAR SPINAL LOADS DURING A GOLF SWING

    This study compared two different models that were required for the computation of the lumbar spinal loads during a golf swing. Simple scaling and optimization techniques were used to modify the initial muscle forces obtained by the EMG-based model such that the condition for moment equilibrium was met. The results indicated that the discrepancies occurred in lumbar spinal loads estimated by the EMG-assisted (EMGA) and EMG-assisted optimization (EMGAO) models due to the differences in gain values obtained by these models. Unlike the EMGA model, the EMGAO model attempted to find optimized gain values for individual muscles. The EMGAO model not only satisfied the moment equilibrium conditions but also determined final muscle forces within a realistic range. Therefore, the EMGAO model would be superior to the EMGA model in terms of muscle force prediction or lumbar spinal loads estimation

    Attitude and Phase Synchronization of Formation Flying Spacecraft: Lagrangian Approach

    This article presents a unified synchronization framework with application to precision formation flying spacecraft. Central to the proposed innovation, in applying synchroniza- tion to both translational and rotational dynamics in the Lagrangian form, is the use of the distributed stability and performance analysis tool, called contraction analysis that yields exact nonlinear stability proofs. The proposed decentralized tracking control law synchronizes the attitude of an arbitrary number of spacecraft into a common time-varying trajectory with global exponential convergence. Moreover, a decentralized translational tracking control law based on phase synchronization is presented, thus enabling coupled translational and rotational maneuvers. While the translational dynamics can be adequately controlled by linear control laws, the proposed method permits highly nonlinear systems with nonlinearly coupled inertia matrices such as the attitude dynamics of space-craft whose large and rapid slew maneuvers justify the nonlinear control approach. The proposed method integrates both the trajectory tracking and synchronization problems in a single control framework

    Relative Yields and Nutritive Value of Whole Crop Rice Harvested on Four Successive Dates for Forage in Korea

    About four million tons of forages are fed to ruminants in Korea, but half of them rely on rice straw as roughage and 0.6 million tons of forage was imported. The lack of forage results in increased imports of concentrate feeds and increased production cost. Now, Korea has about 1.1 million ha of rice fields, but as a consequence of world trade negotiation, Korea will open the rice market from next year. It is expected that due to aging farmers and lower rice price, about 0.2 million ha of paddy field will not be cultivated for grain rice. Therefore, we suggest that whole-crop rice cultivation for feeding beef and dairy cattle.     Changes in neuropsychological functioning following temporal lobectomy in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy

    Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the changes in neuropsychological functioning in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) after temporal lobe resection. Methods: Fifty-four TLE patients were evaluated before and after surgery using comprehensive neuropsychological tests to assess general intelligence, executive functioning, language, verbal and visual memory, working memory, visuo-spatial ability, attention and motor function. Results: The patients with left TLE showed no impairment of neuropsychological functioning after surgery, with the exception of auditory immediate memory. Furthermore, they showed significant improvement in performance IQ, executive function, working memory, visual memory, attention and psychomotor speed. The patients with right TLE did not show any significant impairment in post-operative neuropsychological functioning. They showed improvements in intellectual and executive functions, language, visual memory, visuo-spatial ability, attention and motor function post-operatively. The patients with hippocampal sclerosis showed greater post-operative improvements than the patients without hippocampal sclerosis regardless of the side. Patients with better pre-operative neuropsychological function had a higher chance of successfully discontinuing all seizure medications after surgery. Discussion: The results of this study suggest that temporal lobectomy does not harm the neuropsychological functioning of patients with intractable TLE and that it improves cognitive functions of the contralateral hemisphere. © 2009 W.     Expression of MUC5AC and MUC5B mucins in normal and cystic fibrosis lung

    AbstractHypersecretion of airway mucus is a characteristic feature of chronic airway diseases like cystic fibrosis (CF) and leads via impairment of the muco-ciliary clearance and bacterial superinfection to respiratory failure. The major components of the mucus matrix forming family of mucins in the airways are MUC5AC and MUC5B. To investigate the expression of these glycoproteins in CF, immunohistochemistry was carried out on trachea, bronchi and peripheral lung obtained from CF patients and compared to normal lung tissues. MUC5AC immunohistochemistry demonstrated signals in goblet cells of the epithelial lining. Also, goblet cells inside glandular secretory ducts revealed MUC5AC-positive staining. In comparison to those from normal subjects, CF sections were characterized by inflammatory changes and goblet cell hyperplasia, resulting in increased numbers of MUC5AC-positive cells. Immunohistochemical staining for MUC5B showed abundant staining of submucosal glands and epithelial goblet cells. Inside the glands, the immunoreactivity was restricted to glandular mucous cells. MUC5AC and MUC5B are expressed in the same histological pattern in CF compared to normal tissues with an increase of MUC5AC-positive cells due to goblet cell hyper- and metaplasia

    Miniaturised all-optical ultrasound probe for thrombus imaging

    All-Optical Ultrasound (OpUS) has emerged as an imaging paradigm well-suited for minimally invasive procedures. In particular, OpUS has demonstrated potential in endovascular imaging due to its high degree of miniaturization and mechanical flexibility, high imaging resolution and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Here, we present the first human thrombus imaging using an OpUS device, which was performed on an extracted clot. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using OpUS for thrombus imaging, with the ultimate goal of guiding minimally invasive endovascular clot retrieval procedures

    Diode Like Attributes in Magnetic Domain Wall Devices via Geometrical Pinning for Neuromorphic Computing

    Neuromorphic computing (NC) is considered as a potential vehicle for implementing energy-efficient artificial intelligence (AI). To realize NC, several materials systems are being investigated. Among them, the spin-orbit torque (SOT) -driven domain wall (DW) devices are one of the potential candidates. To implement these devices as neurons and synapses, the building blocks of NC, researchers have proposed different device designs. However, the experimental realization of DW device-based NC is only at the primeval stage. In this study, we have proposed and investigated pine-tree-shaped DW devices, based on the Laplace force on the elastic DWs, for achieving the synaptic functionalities. We have successfully observed multiple magnetization states when the DW was driven by the SOT current. The key observation is the asymmetric pinning strength of the device when DW moves in two opposite directions (defined as, xhard and xeasy). This shows the potential of these DW devices as DW diodes. We have used micromagnetic simulations to understand the experimental findings and to estimate the Laplace pressure for various design parameters. The study leads to the path of device fabrication, where synaptic properties are achieved with asymmetric pinning potential
