    Monomial, Gorenstein and Bass Orders

    In this article we study a class of orders called {\it monomial orders} in a central simple algebra over a non-Archimedean local field. Monomial orders are easily represented and they may be also viewed as a direct generalization of Eichler orders in quaternion algebras. A criterion for monomial orders to be Gorenstein or to be Bass is given. It is shown that a monomial order is Bass if and only if it is either a hereditary or an Eichler order of period two.Comment: 13 pages; fix typos in the proof of Theorem 3.

    Supersingular abelian surfaces and Eichler class number formula

    Let FF be a totally real field with ring of integers OFO_F, and DD be a totally definite quaternion algebra over FF. A well-known formula established by Eichler and then extended by K\"orner computes the class number of any OFO_F-order in DD. In this paper we generalize the Eichler class number formula so that it works for arbitrary Z\mathbb{Z}-orders in DD. The motivation is to count the isomorphism classes of supersingular abelian surfaces in a simple isogeny class over a prime finite field Fp\mathbb{F}_p.     In vitro assay to estimate tea astringency via observing flotation of artificial oil bodies sheltered by caleosin fused with histatin 3

    AbstractAstringency, a sensory characteristic of food and beverages rich in polyphenols, mainly results from the formation of complexes between polyphenols and salivary proteins, causing a reduction of the lubricating properties of saliva. To develop an in vitro assay to estimate the astringency of oolong tea infusion, artificial oil bodies were constituted with sesame oil sheltered by a modified caleosin fused with histatin 3, one of the human salivary small peptides. Aggregation of artificial oil bodies was induced when they were mixed with oolong tea infusion or its major polyphenolic compound, (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) of 100μM as observed in light microscopy. The aggregated artificial oil bodies gradually floated on top of the solution and formed a visible milky layer whose thickness was in proportion to the concentrations of tea infusion. This assay system was applied to test four different oolong tea infusions with sensory astringency corresponding to their EGCG contents. The result showed that relative astringency of the four tea infusions was correlated to the thickness of floated artificial oil bodies, and could be estimated according to the standard curve generated by simultaneously observing a serial dilution of the tea infusion with the highest astringency

    Primary ovary transitional cell carcinoma after renal transplantation

    AbstractTransitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary tract is the most frequent malignancy following renal transplantation reported in Taiwan. A 67-year-old female underwent bilateral nephrouretectomy and bladder cuff excision because of bilateral hydronephrosis 5 years after cadaveric renal transplantation. The pathologic report was only atrophied kidney. Pelvic sonography and abdominal computed tomography showed a pelvic mass 8 years after transplantation. After gynecological surgery, the pathologic report of the left ovarian tumor was TCC, high grade, stage IIA. The patient then underwent four cycles of postoperative chemotherapy with carboplatin and gemcitabine. TCC of the ovary is a rare, recently recognized subtype of ovarian surface epithelial cancer.     Antioxidant Activities and Phytochemical Study of Leaf Extracts from 18 Indigenous Tree Species in Taiwan

    The objective of this study is to assess antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts from the leaves of 18 indigenous tree species in Taiwan. Results revealed that, among 18 species, Acer oliverianum exhibited the best free radical scavenging activities. The IC50 values were 5.8 and 11.8 μg/mL on DPPH radical and superoxide radical scavenging activities, respectively. In addition, A. oliverianum also exhibited the strongest ferrous ion chelating activity. Based on a bioactivity-guided isolation principle, the resulting methanolic crude extracts of A. oliverianum leaves were fractionated to yield soluble fractions of hexane, EtOAc, BuOH, and water. Of these, the EtOAc fraction had the best antioxidant activity. Furthermore, 8 specific phytochemicals were isolated and identified from the EtOAc fraction. Among them, 1,2,3,4,6-O-penta-galloyl-β-D-glucopyranose had the best free radical scavenging activity. These results demonstrate that methanolic extracts and their derived phytochemicals of A. oliverianum leaves have excellent antioxidant activities and thus they have great potential as sources for natural health products
