    Mindful navigation with guiding light : design considerations for projector based indoor navigation assistance system

Research has shown how automated navigation assistance systems lead users to be disengaged from the space through which they are traveling, resulting in poor recollection of the environment and poorer situational decision-making. This disengagement and mindlessness can potentially increase the risk of accidents and lower the quality of user experience. If we can help people become mindfully attentive to the environment and surroundings while carrying out navigation tasks using assistive technologies, I hypothesize that we will have better memory of the space, improved cognitive reconstruction of environment, and better understanding of the immediate situation, all of which will lead to better decision making and more efficient navigation. In this work, I present a new approach for analyzing the problem of navigation assistance for pedestrians, which considers both the physical and psychological constraints of users focused on navigation. I address the physical constraint that eyes should remain "on the street" by providing a new visual interface, named Guiding Light, that offers a mixed reality presentation of guidance information in the environment itself, instead of on a screen. We address the psychological constraint that minds should remain engaged with the environment by applying a framework based on mindfulness and mindlessness theory (Langer 1989) in the design of the system. The theory explains how mindsets affect engagement levels and decision-making in daily activities. In addition, this thesis describes an indoor positioning technology that provides relatively high accuracy localization and heading orientation of a user in indoor environments. The innovation not only involved developing a new sensor but also a software system to collect fingerprint maps and tracking location with the fingerprint maps.     Comparison of Visual Outcomes of Ophthalmic Artery Aneurysms Treated with Microsurgical Clipping and Endovascular Coiling

    Purpose Post-treatment visual deficit is a major concern associated with both microsurgical clipping and endovascular coiling for the treatment of ophthalmic artery (OphA) aneurysms of the internal carotid artery. We aimed to compare the safety and effectiveness of the 2 modalities. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed and compared the baseline characteristics and postoperative visual and angiographic outcomes of OphA aneurysms treated by clipping or coiling between January 2010 and August 2018 at our hospital. In addition, the balloon occlusion test was performed to evaluate the safety of OphA occlusion. Results This study included 56 aneurysms treated by clipping and 82 aneurysms treated by coiling. Both the immediate and follow-up rates of incomplete aneurysm occlusion were comparable between the 2 groups (21.4% vs. 22.0%; 24.4% vs. 23.6%). The incidence of post-treatment visual deficits was higher in the clipping group than in the coiling group (16.1% vs. 2.4%; P=0.010). We observed total ipsilateral OphA occlusion in 6 patients and near occlusion in 3 patients during endovascular coiling; however, only 1 patient with near OphA occlusion showed a post-treatment visual field defect. Conclusion OphA aneurysms treated by endovascular coiling exhibited an aneurysm occlusion rate similar to that of microsurgical clipping with fewer post-treatment visual deficits. The total occlusion of OphA with adequate collaterals did not cause post-treatment visual deficits

    Whole genome sequencing of an ethnic Pathan (Pakhtun) from the north-west of Pakistan.

    BACKGROUND: Pakistan covers a key geographic area in human history, being both part of the Indus River region that acted as one of the cradles of civilization and as a link between Western Eurasia and Eastern Asia. This region is inhabited by a number of distinct ethnic groups, the largest being the Punjabi, Pathan (Pakhtuns), Sindhi, and Baloch. RESULTS: We analyzed the first ethnic male Pathan genome by sequencing it to 29.7-fold coverage using the Illumina HiSeq2000 platform. A total of 3.8 million single nucleotide variations (SNVs) and 0.5 million small indels were identified by comparing with the human reference genome. Among the SNVs, 129,441 were novel, and 10,315 nonsynonymous SNVs were found in 5,344 genes. SNVs were annotated for health consequences and high risk diseases, as well as possible influences on drug efficacy. We confirmed that the Pathan genome presented here is representative of this ethnic group by comparing it to a panel of Central Asians from the HGDP-CEPH panels typed for ~650 k SNPs. The mtDNA (H2) and Y haplogroup (L1) of this individual were also typical of his geographic region of origin. Finally, we reconstruct the demographic history by PSMC, which highlights a recent increase in effective population size compatible with admixture between European and Asian lineages expected in this geographic region. CONCLUSIONS: We present a whole-genome sequence and analyses of an ethnic Pathan from the north-west province of Pakistan. It is a useful resource to understand genetic variation and human migration across the whole Asian continent

    Study on the Effect of Turbine Inlet Temperature and Backpressure Conditions on Reduced Turbine Flow Rate Performance Characteristics and Correction Method for Automotive Turbocharger

    In actual vehicle operation, the turbocharger turbine operates at various temperatures, inlet, and backpressure conditions, unlike compressors. The flow rate characteristics of the turbine are generally evaluated under certain conditions using an assembled turbocharger with a compressor and a turbine and a hot gas bench from the turbocharger manufacturer. Flow rate characteristics are also presented as the reduced mass flow rate to correct the flow rate characteristics according to the turbine inlet temperature and pressure. Therefore, the turbine mass flow rate seen in many engine development cases and studies—including the analysis of the turbine performance and characteristics, engine model configuration, and matching of the engine and turbocharger—is calculated according to the reduced turbine mass flow rate performance and turbine inlet temperature and pressure obtained through hot gas bench experiments under certain conditions. However, the performance of the reduced turbine mass flow rate is influenced by the compressor power conditions, and additional correction of the reduced turbine mass flow rate is required when the turbine inlet temperature and turbine backpressure differ from the reference test conditions, such as the hot gas bench test conditions. In this study, the effect of the turbine inlet temperature and turbine backpressure on the performance of the reduced turbine mass flow rate were examined based on the power balance relationship between the compressor and turbine of an automotive turbocharger.
