High-energy-low-temperature technologies for the synthesis of nanoparticles: Microwaves and high pressure
Microwave Solvothermal Synthesis (MSS) is a chemical technology, where apart from possible effects of microwaves on the chemical reaction paths, microwave heating allows the precise planning of a time-temperature schedule, as well as to achieve high super-saturation of the reagents uniformly in the reactor vessel. Thus, MSS is suitable for production of nanoparticles with small grain size distribution and a high degree of crystallinity. A further advantage of the technology is a much lower synthesis temperature than for gas phase, plasma or sol-gel technologies. New reactors have been developed to exploit these advantages of the MSS technology of nanoparticles synthesis and to scale up the production rate. Reactor design and realization has been shown to be decisive and critical for the control of the MSS technology. Examples of oxidic and phosphatic nanoparticles synthesis have been reported
Effect of Pressure on Synthesis of Pr-Doped Zirconia Powders Produced by Microwave-Driven Hydrothermal Reaction
A high-pressure microwave reactor was used to study the hydrothermal synthesis of
zirconia powders doped with 1 mol % Pr. The synthesis was performed in the pressure range
from 2 to 8 MPa corresponding to a temperature range from 215C∘ to 305C∘. This technology
permits a synthesis of nanopowders in short time not limited by thermal inertia of the vessel.
Microwave heating permits to avoid contact of the reactants with heating elements, and is thus
particularly well suited for synthesis of doped nanopowders in high purity conditions.
A mixture of ZrO2 particles with tetragonal and monoclinic crystalline phases, about 15 nm in size, was obtained.
The p/T threshold of about 5-6 MPa/265–280C∘ was necessary to obtain good quality of
zirconia powder. A new method for quantitative description of grain-size distribution was applied, which is
based on analysis of the fine structure of the X-ray diffraction line profiles. It permitted to
follow separately the effect of synthesis conditions on the grain-size distribution of the
monoclinic and tetragonal phases
ATLAS Data Transfer Functional Test (October 2006)
Data transfer function test was conducted in October 2006. DDM software components were used to transmit, control and monitor data movement. Spectroscopy of Na: Bridging the two-proton radioactivity of Mg
The unbound nucleus Na, the intermediate nucleus in the two-proton
radioactivity of Mg, was studied by the measurement of the resonant
elastic scattering reaction Ne(p,Ne)p performed at 4 A.MeV.
Spectroscopic properties of the low-lying states were obtained in a R-matrix
analysis of the excitation function. Using these new results, we show that the
lifetime of the Mg radioactivity can be understood assuming a sequential
emission of two protons via low energy tails of Na resonances

Identifying and harmonizing the priorities of stakeholders in the Chesapeake Bay environmental monitoring community
Research collaborations between volunteer monitoring groups and environmental scientists and managers are instrumental for understanding and managing complex socioecological systems. In the Chesapeake region, the Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative (CMC) helps coordinate volunteer monitoring efforts throughout the watershed, and facilitates collaboration between environmental stakeholders. However, stakeholders perceive their environment and their own role in different ways, and these perceptions affect how they prioritize problems and respective solutions. We conducted a survey to explore the extent to which cultural knowledge about environmental monitoring was shared across the CMC community, pinpoint key similarities and differences in how stakeholder groups prioritized various environmental monitoring goals, and understand stakeholders' perspectives of the CMC's resources. We learned that stakeholders drew from a shared system of cultural knowledge surrounding environmental monitoring and prioritized goals related to collecting actionable data and improving environmental conditions. There were also compelling differences in how stakeholder groups prioritized increasing knowledge and building a sense of community. Furthermore, stakeholders especially valued CMC resources associated with increasing the quality, quantity, and accessibility of volunteer-collected data. Based on our results, we developed recommendations to inform the design and coordination of other collaborative environmental monitoring programs. We argue that cultural consensus can provide a foundation for collaboration, and stakeholders' highest-priority monitoring goals can inform organizational priorities and strategic outreach. Furthermore, efforts to build social capital and understand stakeholders' changing priorities over time will be important for ensuring the continued success of the research partnership.</p
