Incompressible Limit of a Compressible Liquid Crystals System

This article is devoted to the study of the so-called incompressible limit for solutions of the compressible liquid crystals system. We consider the problem in the whole space RN\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}} and a bounded domain of RN\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}} with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here the number of dimension N=2\mathbb{N}=2 or 3

    Video-Helpful Multimodal Machine Translation

Existing multimodal machine translation (MMT) datasets consist of images and video captions or instructional video subtitles, which rarely contain linguistic ambiguity, making visual information ineffective in generating appropriate translations. Recent work has constructed an ambiguous subtitles dataset to alleviate this problem but is still limited to the problem that videos do not necessarily contribute to disambiguation. We introduce EVA (Extensive training set and Video-helpful evaluation set for Ambiguous subtitles translation), an MMT dataset containing 852k Japanese-English (Ja-En) parallel subtitle pairs, 520k Chinese-English (Zh-En) parallel subtitle pairs, and corresponding video clips collected from movies and TV episodes. In addition to the extensive training set, EVA contains a video-helpful evaluation set in which subtitles are ambiguous, and videos are guaranteed helpful for disambiguation. Furthermore, we propose SAFA, an MMT model based on the Selective Attention model with two novel methods: Frame attention loss and Ambiguity augmentation, aiming to use videos in EVA for disambiguation fully. Experiments on EVA show that visual information and the proposed methods can boost translation performance, and our model performs significantly better than existing MMT models. The EVA dataset and the SAFA model are available at: https://github.com/ku-nlp/video-helpful-MMT.git.Comment: Accepted by EMNLP 2023 Main Conference (long paper

CBISI-LSTM Deep Learning Model for Short-term Cross-border Capital Flow Prediction

    Get PDF
With the drastic fluctuation of the international financial market in recent years, the cross-border capital flow between Shanghai and Hong Kong has become increasingly active. The lack of effective and timely tracking monitoring and scientific management of cross-border capital flow in the capital market will seriously affect the overall financial security of China\u27s economy. This paper constructs the cross-border investor sentiment index CBISI based on principal component analysis and analyzes the impact of cross-border investor sentiment and cross-border capital flows by constructing the VAR model. In addition, CBISI is used as part of the input variable of LSTM to forecast the cross-border capital flow (NF). The findings of the study indicate that changes in cross-border investor sentiment will have a significant short-term impact on cross-border capital flows, and the addition of CBISI will improve the accuracy of cross-border flow estimates

We prove the global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the general liquid crystals system. The problem is studied in bounded domain of R3R^3 with Dirichlet boundary conditions and the whole space R3R^3

Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data

VISA: An Ambiguous Subtitles Dataset for Visual Scene-Aware Machine Translation

Existing multimodal machine translation (MMT) datasets consist of images and video captions or general subtitles, which rarely contain linguistic ambiguity, making visual information not so effective to generate appropriate translations. We introduce VISA, a new dataset that consists of 40k Japanese-English parallel sentence pairs and corresponding video clips with the following key features: (1) the parallel sentences are subtitles from movies and TV episodes; (2) the source subtitles are ambiguous, which means they have multiple possible translations with different meanings; (3) we divide the dataset into Polysemy and Omission according to the cause of ambiguity. We show that VISA is challenging for the latest MMT system, and we hope that the dataset can facilitate MMT research. The VISA dataset is available at: https://github.com/ku-nlp/VISA.Comment: Accepted by LREC202

Modification of Frictional Properties of Hydrogel Surface via Laser Ablated Topographical Micro-Textures

    No full text
Hydrogels and biological cartilage tissues are highly similar in structure and composition due to their unique characteristics such as high-water content and low friction coefficients. The introduction of hydrogel cartilage can effectively reduce the friction coefficient and wear coefficient of the original bone joint and the implanted metal bone joint (generally titanium alloy or stainless steel), which is considered as a perfect replacement material for artificial articular cartilage. How to accurately regulate the local tribological characteristics of hydrogel artificial cartilage according to patient weight and bone shape is one of the important challenges in the current clinical application field of medical hydrogels. In this study, the mechanism by which micro-pits improve the surface friction properties was studied. Ultraviolet lasers were used to efficiently construct micro-pits with different shapes on a polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel in one step. It was shown that by using such a maskless laser processing, the performance of each part of the artificial cartilage can be customized flexibly and effectively. We envision that the approach demonstrated in this article will provide an important idea for the development of a high-performance, continuous and accurate method for controlling surface friction properties of artificial cartilage

Deep learning bird song recognition based on MFF-ScSEnet

    No full text
Bird diversity plays an important role in ecological balance, and bird song identification is of great practical significance. The spectrum generated by feature extraction shows good performance on classification. However, the information extracted by the filter in the process of spectrogram generation can cause information loss, which limits the learning ability of birdsong recognition. This study proposes a feature fusion network (MFF-ScSEnet) to solve this problem. The audios of the birdsong extracted the Mel-spectrogram with low-frequency feature advantage by the Mel-filter, and the Sinc-spectrogram with timbral feature advantage by the Sincnet-filter, respectively, and perform the early fusion strategy. The ScSEnet attention module is introduced into the backbone network ResNet18 to enhance the sound ripple information of the spectrogram, reduce the influence of spectrogram noise information on the recognition and improve the recognition performance of the network. Based on the feature fusion network MFF-ScSEnet in this paper, the accuracy of the experimental results on the self-built birdsong dataset (Huabei_dataset), the public datasets of Urbansound8K and Birdsdata reached 96.28%, 98.34%, and 96.66%, respectively. The results indicated that the method proposed in this paper is superior to the recent and latest birdsong recognition method
