Countering Eavesdroppers with Meta-learning-based Cooperative Ambient Backscatter Communications
This article introduces a novel lightweight framework using ambient
backscattering communications to counter eavesdroppers. In particular, our
framework divides an original message into two parts: (i) the active-transmit
message transmitted by the transmitter using conventional RF signals and (ii)
the backscatter message transmitted by an ambient backscatter tag that
backscatters upon the active signals emitted by the transmitter. Notably, the
backscatter tag does not generate its own signal, making it difficult for an
eavesdropper to detect the backscattered signals unless they have prior
knowledge of the system. Here, we assume that without decoding/knowing the
backscatter message, the eavesdropper is unable to decode the original message.
Even in scenarios where the eavesdropper can capture both messages,
reconstructing the original message is a complex task without understanding the
intricacies of the message-splitting mechanism. A challenge in our proposed
framework is to effectively decode the backscattered signals at the receiver,
often accomplished using the maximum likelihood (MLK) approach. However, such a
method may require a complex mathematical model together with perfect channel
state information (CSI). To address this issue, we develop a novel deep
meta-learning-based signal detector that can not only effectively decode the
weak backscattered signals without requiring perfect CSI but also quickly adapt
to a new wireless environment with very little knowledge. Simulation results
show that our proposed learning approach, without requiring perfect CSI and
complex mathematical model, can achieve a bit error ratio close to that of the
MLK-based approach. They also clearly show the efficiency of the proposed
approach in dealing with eavesdropping attacks and the lack of training data
for deep learning models in practical scenarios
Commune agroecosystem analysis to support decision making for water allocation for fisheries and agriculture in the Tonle Sap wetland system
The Project on Commune Agroecosystem Analysis to Support Decision Making for Water Allocation
for Fisheries and Agriculture in the Tonle Sap Wetland System was undertaken with the aim of
improving fisheries considerations in the Commune Agroecosystem Analysis (CAEA) process
undertaken in Cambodia, to facilitate better planning at the commune level. Under this project a
number of changes were made to the CAEA tools and process and pilot tested in an adaptive,
iterative manner in four communes – two that had conducted a CAEA previously and two that had
not. Results and analyses indicated that the project had significantly strengthened the manner in
which livelihoods, water resources and fisheries are now addressed by CAEA. The revised CAEA
guidance manual has also shown potential for having wider uptake, and a number of tools have
been used by several other projects within Cambodia
High-Temperature Effective Potential of Noncommutative Scalar Field Theory: Reduction of Degree of Freedom by Noncommutativity
The renormalization of effective potentials for the noncommutative scalar
field theory at high temperature are investigated to the two-loop
approximation. The Feynman diagrams in evaluating the effective potential may
be classified into two types: the planar diagrams and nonplanar diagrams. The
nonplanar diagrams, which depend on the parameter of noncommutativity, do not
appear in the one-loop potential. Despite their appearance in the two-loop
level, they do not have an inclination to restore the symmetry breaking in the
tree level, in contrast to the planar diagrams. This phenomenon is explained as
a consequence of the drastic reduction of the degrees of freedom in the
nonplanar diagrams when the thermal wavelength is smaller than the
noncommutativity scale. Our results show that the nonplanar two-loop
contribution to the effective potential can be neglected in comparsion with

Lower cerebrospinal fluid/plasma fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) ratios and placental FGF21 production in gestational diabetes
Objectives: Circulating Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) levels are increased in insulin resistant states such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). In addition, GDM is associated with serious maternal and fetal complications. We sought to study human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and corresponding circulating FGF21 levels in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and in age and BMI matched control subjects. We also assessed FGF21 secretion from GDM and control human placental explants.
Design: CSF and corresponding plasma FGF21 levels of 24 women were measured by ELISA [12 GDM (age: 26–47 years, BMI: 24.3–36.3 kg/m2) and 12 controls (age: 22–40 years, BMI: 30.1–37.0 kg/m2)]. FGF21 levels in conditioned media were secretion from GDM and control human placental explants were also measured by ELISA.
Results: Glucose, HOMA-IR and circulating NEFA levels were significantly higher in women with GDM compared to control subjects. Plasma FGF21 levels were significantly higher in women with GDM compared to control subjects [234.3 (150.2–352.7) vs. 115.5 (60.5–188.7) pg/ml; P<0.05]. However, there was no significant difference in CSF FGF21 levels in women with GDM compared to control subjects. Interestingly, CSF/Plasma FGF21 ratio was significantly lower in women with GDM compared to control subjects [0.4 (0.3–0.6) vs. 0.8 (0.5–1.6); P<0.05]. FGF21 secretion into conditioned media was significantly lower in human placental explants from women with GDM compared to control subjects (P<0.05).
Conclusions: The central actions of FGF21 in GDM subjects maybe pivotal in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in GDM subjects. The significance of FGF21 produced by the placenta remains uncharted and maybe crucial in our understanding of the patho-physiology of GDM and its associated maternal and fetal complications.
