Self-stresses and Crack Formation by Particle Swelling in Cohesive Granular Media
We present a molecular dynamics study of force patterns, tensile strength and
crack formation in a cohesive granular model where the particles are subjected
to swelling or shrinkage gradients. Non-uniform particle size change generates
self-equilibrated forces that lead to crack initiation as soon as strongest
tensile contacts begin to fail. We find that the coarse-grained stresses are
correctly predicted by an elastic model that incorporates particle size change
as metric evolution. The tensile strength is found to be well below the
theoretical strength as a result of inhomogeneous force transmission in
granular media. The cracks propagate either inward from the edge upon shrinkage
and outward from the center upon swelling

Privatization in Denmark, 1980-2002
Denmark is one of the most developed welfare states, but also a rather capitalistic state with little public ownership outside the traditional fields of the public sector and the natural monopolies of the network industries. The low level of public ownership corresponds to peoples’ attitude in polls. Nevertheless, 12 privatizations of state companies have been made along with everybody else. No statistics on privatization have been previously published in Denmark. Most of the 12 privatizations are small, and the telephone company provides 76 percent of the total revenue. In the municipal sector, however, most privatization activity appears to be outsourcing.Privatization, outsourcing, capitalist values

Investors Do Respond to Poor Mutual Fund Performance: Evidence from Inflows and Outflows
Abstract
We examine the relation between mutual fund performance and gross flows for a large sample of actively managed U.S. mutual funds. Unlike previous studies that have only examined periods of generally increasing net flows, our sample includes periods of both increasing and decreasing net flows. We find that outflows are related to performance, with investors withdrawing money from poor performers. We also find that outflows and inflows respond asymmetrically to performance, outflows increase more aggressively following poor performance, and inflows increase more aggressively following good performance. Additionally, we find a symmetric performance net flow relation

Utilizing Highway Rest Areas for Electric Vehicle Charging: Economics and Impacts on Renewable Energy Penetration in California
California policy is incentivizing rapid adoption of zero emission electric vehicles for light-duty and freight applications. This project explored how locating charging facilities at California’s highway rest stops might impact electricity demand, grid operation, and integration of renewables like solar and wind into California’s energy mix. Assuming a growing population of electric vehicles to meet state goals, state-wide growth of electricity demand was estimated, and the most attractive rest stop locations for siting chargers identified. Using a California-specific electricity dispatch model developed at UC Davis, the project estimated how charging vehicles at these stations would impact renewable energy curtailment in California. It estimated the impacts of charging infrastructures on California’s electricity system and how they can be utilized to decrease the duck curve effect resulting from a large amount of solar energy penetration by 2050.View the NCST Project Webpag
