    Professional desire, competence and engagement in IS context

    This paper attempts to address the failings of a predominant paradigm in IS research and practice that emphasises technological determinism. This paradigm makes use of a false belief in the power of rationality in organizational decision-making, and a mythology in which organizational actors can be viewed as passive ‘users’ of technology. We wish to create a discussion of the nature and role of professionalism as an expression of more than technical competence. Both system analysts and organizational stakeholders (e.g. ‘users’) are to be viewed as professionals. We discuss desire, exercise of will and their role in professional judgment in relation to transcendent values espoused within communities of practice. We go on to relate this to the environments of Information Systems research and practice. It is pointed out that many researchers, over a number of years, have dealt with these issues in relation to effective management of technological development and organizational change. The paper attempts to encourage renewed attention to interpretivist perspectives on IS development and organizational change, including recognition of the importance of contextual dependencies

    Lattice QCD meets experiment in hadron physics

    We review recent results in lattice QCD from numerical simulations that allow for a much more realistic QCD vacuum than has been possible before. Comparison with experiment for a variety of hadronic quantities gives agreement to within statistical and systematic errors of 3%. We discuss the implications of this for future calculations in lattice QCD, particularly those which will provide input for B factory experiments.Comment: Review talk at HADRON2003, Aschaffenberg, Germany, September 200

    Crisis! what crisis?

    Abstract There is a crisis discussed in the discipline of Information Systems. Those who perceive such a crisis to exist are by no means agreed, as to its nature and origins. Our inquiry shows that there are a three distinct “crises” being debated. The first of these relates to the Substance and boundaries of the discipline itself and if it is even a discipline at all. Another “crisis” relates to higher education and a fall in demand for IS courses from new students. Commentators perceive this to threaten the existence of IS departments in Universities, and to have potentially serious consequences for both research strategies and career paths of academics. Thirdly, there is perception of a crisis in the wider world, characterised by fewer vacancies in IS-relevant occupations whilst, at the same time, employers complain of a shortage of suitably skilled applicants for the vacancies available.     Improving pupil group work interaction and dialogue in primary classrooms : Results from a year-long intervention study

    Findings are reported from a year-long evaluation of the effectiveness of the SPRinG programme relative to a control group. SPRinG aimed to address the wide gap between the potential of group interaction to promote learning and its limited use in schools. The project involved working with teachers to develop strategies for enhancing pupil group-work and dialogue, and to implement a pupil relational and group skills training programme. Video observations were conducted of a sub-sample of pupil groups (31 SPRinG; 29 Control groups) working on a specially designed group decision-making activity undertaken in everyday classroom settings. SPRinG groups displayed higher levels of participation, engagement, active and sustained discussion, high level inferential joint reasoning and lower levels of group disruptive blocking behaviours. We argue that group-work can be successfully implemented into everyday school classrooms, and improve pupil interactions and high level discussion, provided teachers take time to train pupils in relational and group-working skills

    Automatic Annotation of Images from the Practitioner Perspective

    This paper describes an ongoing project which seeks to contribute to a wider understanding of the realities of bridging the semantic gap in visual image retrieval. A comprehensive survey of the means by which real image retrieval transactions are realised is being undertaken. An image taxonomy has been developed, in order to provide a framework within which account may be taken of the plurality of image types, user needs and forms of textual metadata. Significant limitations exhibited by current automatic annotation techniques are discussed, and a possible way forward using ontologically supported automatic content annotation is briefly considered as a potential means of mitigating these limitations

    Electrochemical Behavior of Magnetron-Sputtered Al–Cu Alloy Films in Sulfate Solutions

    Model alloys, generated by magnetron sputtering, have been employed to understand the role of copper on the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys. Binary Al–Cu alloys, with copper contents between 0 and 100 atom %, were synthesized with well-controlled compositions, embracing single-phase alpha and theta alloys together with multiphase alloys. Electrochemical measurements confirmed the stability of the thin alloy films and revealed that the corrosion behavior of the alpha, theta, and eta2 phases differed strongly in the cathodic region. Further, in the anodic region, phases of high copper content suffered pitting in sulfate solutions, while the alpha phase remained passive
