Adapting to the health impacts of climate change in a sustainable manner
The climate is changing is this is posing significant threats to human health. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing Pacific Island countries and territories due to their unique geophysical features, and their social, economic and cultural characteristics. the Pacific region also faces challenges with widely dispersed populations, limited resources and fragmented health systems. Over the past few years, there has been a substantial increase in international aid for health activities aimed at adapting to the threats of climate change. This funding needs to be used strategically to ensure an effective approach to reducing the health risk from climate change. Respecting the principles of development effectiveness will result in more effective and sustainable adaptation, in particular, 1) processes should be owned and driven by local communities, 2) investments should be aligned with existing national priorities and policies, and 3) existing systems must not be ignored, but rather expanded upon and reinforced
Current trends in the structure-activity relationships of sialyltransferases.
International audienceSialyltransferases (STs) represent an important group of enzymes that transfer N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) from cytidine monophosphate-Neu5Ac to various acceptor substrates. In higher animals, sialylated oligosaccharide structures play crucial roles in many biological processes but also in diseases, notably in microbial infection and cancer. Cell surface sialic acids have also been found in a few microorganisms, mainly pathogenic bacteria, and their presence is often associated with virulence. STs are distributed into five different families in the CAZy database (http://www.cazy.org/). On the basis of crystallographic data available for three ST families and fold recognition analysis for the two other families, STs can be grouped into two structural superfamilies that represent variations of the canonical glycosyltransferase (GT-A and GT-B) folds. These two superfamilies differ in the nature of their active site residues, notably the catalytic base (a histidine or an aspartate residue). The observed structural and functional differences strongly suggest that these two structural superfamilies have evolved independently

Nonlinear pulse reshaping with highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber for OCDMA receivers
International audienceWe combine an erbium-doped fiber amplifier with a short segment of highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber to generate a nonlinear transfer function suitable for optical transmission systems based on optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA). Such a functional element based on spectral broadening followed by an off-center narrow optical filtering provides an effective suppression of spurious signals such as multiple-access interferences in OCDMA receivers and can reduce the pulses amplitude jitter
