    Supporting efficient authorization in delegation with supervision

However, most existing delegation schemes do not support supervision, which allows the delegators to retain control over how the delegated permission can be exercised.     Memory is relevant in the symmetric phase of the minority game

    Minority game is a simple-mined econophysical model capturing the cooperative behavior among selfish players. Previous investigations, which were based on numerical simulations up to about 100 players for a certain parameter Î in the range 0.1â‰Îâ‰1, suggested that memory is irrelevant to the cooperative behavior of the minority game in the so-called symmetric phase. Here using a large scale numerical simulation up to about 3000 players in the parameter range 0. 01â‰Îâ‰1, we show that the mean variance of the attendance in the minority game actually depends on the memory in the symmetric phase. We explain such dependence in the framework of crowd-anticrowd theory. Our findings conclude that one should not overlook the feedback mechanism buried under the correlation in the history time series in the study of minority game. © 2005 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    A method for accurate detection of genomic microdeletions using real-time quantitative PCR

    BACKGROUND: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) is a well-established method for quantifying levels of gene expression, but has not been routinely applied to the detection of constitutional copy number alterations of human genomic DNA. Microdeletions or microduplications of the human genome are associated with a variety of genetic disorders. Although, clinical laboratories routinely use fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to identify such cryptic genomic alterations, there remains a significant number of individuals in which constitutional genomic imbalance is suspected, based on clinical parameters, but cannot be readily detected using current cytogenetic techniques. RESULTS: In this study, a novel application for real-time qPCR is presented that can be used to reproducibly detect chromosomal microdeletions and microduplications. This approach was applied to DNA from a series of patient samples and controls to validate genomic copy number alteration at cytoband 22q11. The study group comprised 12 patients with clinical symptoms of chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), 1 patient trisomic for 22q11 and 4 normal controls. 6 of the patients (group 1) had known hemizygous deletions, as detected by standard diagnostic FISH, whilst the remaining 6 patients (group 2) were classified as 22q11DS negative using the clinical FISH assay. Screening of the patients and controls with a set of 10 real time qPCR primers, spanning the 22q11.2-deleted region and flanking sequence, confirmed the FISH assay results for all patients with 100% concordance. Moreover, this qPCR enabled a refinement of the region of deletion at 22q11. Analysis of DNA from chromosome 22 trisomic sample demonstrated genomic duplication within 22q11. CONCLUSION: In this paper we present a qPCR approach for the detection of chromosomal microdeletions and microduplications. The strategic use of in silico modelling for qPCR primer design to avoid regions of repetitive DNA, whilst providing a level of genomic resolution greater than standard cytogenetic assays. The implementation of qPCR detection in clinical laboratories will address the need to replace complex, expensive and time consuming FISH screening to detect genomic microdeletions or duplications of clinical importance

    Predominance of pHK01-like incompatibility group FII plasmids encoding CTX-M-14 among extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in Hong Kong, 1996-2008

    This study assessed the temporal changes in the molecular epidemiology of bacteremic Escherichia coli isolates producing CTX-M-14 in Hong Kong. Blood isolates from 1996 to 1998 (period 1, n = 50) and 2007 to 2008 (period 2, n = 117) were investigated by molecular methods. CTX-M-type ESBL was carried by 98.2% (164/167) of the isolates. In both periods, the CTX-M-9 group and CTX-M-14 allele were the predominant ESBL type. The major clones were found to change from ST68 and ST405 in period 1 to ST131, ST69, and ST12 in period 2. Among 65 CTX-M-14-producing plasmids investigated further, 54 had the FII replicon. Replicon sequence typing and plasmid polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism showed that 79.6% (43/54) of the FII plasmid subset was similar to the completely sequenced plasmid, pHK01 (human urine, Hong Kong, 2004). These pHK01-like plasmids were found to have spread to the major clones (ST68, ST405, and ST131) and multiple singleton isolates of all 4 phylogenetic groups. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.postprin

    Computational fluid dynamics study of bifurcation aneurysms treated with pipeline embolization device: side branch diameter study

    An intracranial aneurysm, abnormal swelling of the cerebral artery, may lead to undesirable rates of mortality and morbidity upon rupture. Endovascular treatment involves the deployment of a flow-diverting stent that covers the aneurysm orifice, thereby reducing the blood flow into the aneurysm and mitigating the risk of rupture. In this study, computational fluid dynamics analysis is performed on a bifurcation model to investigate the change in hemodynamics with various side branch diameters. The condition after the deployment of a pipeline embolization device is also simulated. Hemodynamic factors such as flow velocity, pressure, and wall shear stress are studied. Aneurysms with a larger side branch vessel might have greater risk after treatment in terms of hemodynamics. Although a stent could lead to flow reduction entering the aneurysm, it would drastically alter the flow rate inside the side branch vessel. This may result in side-branch hypoperfusion subsequent to stenting. In addition, two patient-specific bifurcation aneurysms are tested, and the results show good agreement with the idealized models. Furthermore, the peripheral resistance of downstream vessels is investigated by varying the outlet pressure conditions. This quantitative analysis can assist in treatment planning and therapeutic decision-making.published_or_final_versio
