Empirical Study on Conservative and Representative Heuristics of Hong Kong Small Investors Adopting Momentum and Contrarian Trading Strategies
Recently, a new Bayesian approach has been developed to explain some market anomalies. In this paper, we conduct a questionnaire survey to examine whether the theory holds empirically by studying the conservative and representative heuristics by Hong Kong small investors who adopt momentum and/or contrarian trading strategies. In addition, our study provides evidence for the small investors on their time horizon and risk tolerance when facing uncertainty in their investments. Our findings are useful to small investors in their investment decision making and useful to financial advisors in providing service to small investors
Profitability, ownership structure and technical efficiency of enterprises in P.R. China : a case of manufacturing industries in Shanghai
This paper studies the relationship between accounting profits and technical efficiency of manufacturing enterprises in Shanghai during the period of 1989-1992 and examines which factors affect the profitability of manufacturing enterprises. We first estimate the average technical efficiency of four major manufacturing industries in Shanghai. Then, we test for the presence of ownership effects of technical efficiency on profits of those enterprises in these four industries
Intermolecular CT excitons enable nanosecond excited-state lifetimes in NIR-absorbing non-fullerene acceptors for efficient organic solar cells
State-of-the-art Y6-type molecular acceptors exhibit nanosecond excited-state
lifetimes despite their low optical gaps (~1.4 eV), thus allowing organic solar
cells (OSCs) to achieve highly efficient charge generation with extended
near-infrared (NIR) absorption range (up to ~1000 nm). However, the precise
molecular-level mechanism that enables low-energy excited states in Y6-type
acceptors to achieve nanosecond lifetimes has remained elusive. Here, we
demonstrate that the distinct packing of Y6 molecules in film leads to a strong
intermolecular charge-transfer (iCT) character of the lowest excited state in
Y6 aggregates, which is absent in other low-gap acceptors such as ITIC. Due to
strong electronic couplings between the adjacent Y6 molecules, the iCT-exciton
energies are greatly reduced by up to ~0.25 eV with respect to excitons formed
in separated molecules. Importantly, despite their low energies, the iCT
excitons have reduced non-adiabatic electron-vibration couplings with the
electronic ground state, thus suppressing non-radiative recombination and
allowing Y6 to overcome the well-known energy gap law. Our results reveal the
fundamental relationship between molecular packing and nanosecond excited-state
lifetimes in NIR-absorbing Y6-type acceptors underlying the outstanding
performance of Y6-based OSCs
Effect of Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor on Oral Mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer Patients After Cisplatin, Fluorouracil, and Leucovorin Chemotherapy
These beneficial effects continued into the second cycle of PFL chemotherapy after crossover to no GM-CSF. The incidence of severe mucositis was reduced when GM-CSF was given in the second cycle of PFL. Analysis of variance indicated significant direct GM-CSF treatment effects on the mean AUC of gross/functional scores and duration of moderate gross mucositis (grade -2) over both periods. There was a significant period effect in favor of giving GM-CSF in the first cycle of chemotherapy. Conclusion: GM-CSF can significantly reduce the severity and duration of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis after PFL chemotherapy
Association between Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Risk in Chinese Youth Independent of Age and Pubertal Stage
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Childhood and adolescence are critical periods of habit formation with substantial tracking of lifestyle and cardiovascular risk into adulthood. There are various guidelines on recommended levels of physical activity in youth of school-age. Despite the epidemic of obesity and diabetes in China, there is a paucity of data in this regard in Chinese youth. We examined the association of self-reported level of physical activity and cardiovascular risk in Hong Kong Chinese youth of school-age.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2007-8 in a school setting with 2119 Hong Kong Chinese youth aged 6-20 years. Physical activity level was assessed using a validated questionnaire, CUHK-PARCY (The Chinese University of Hong Kong: Physical Activity Rating for Children and Youth). A summary risk score comprising of waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and lipids was constructed to quantify cardiovascular risk.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this cohort, 21.5% reported high level of physical activity with boys being more active than girls (32.1% versus 14.1%, p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed physical activity level, sex and pubertal stage were independently associated with cardiovascular risk score.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Self-reported level of physical activity is associated with cardiovascular risk factors in Chinese youth after adjusting for sex and pubertal stage.</p
