    Stability Analysis of a Population Model with Maturation Delay and Ricker Birth Function

    A single species population model is investigated, where the discrete maturation delay and the Ricker birth function are incorporated. The threshold determining the global stability of the trivial equilibrium and the existence of the positive equilibrium is obtained. The necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring the local asymptotical stability of the positive equilibrium are given by applying the Pontryagin's method. The effect of all the parameter values on the local stability of the positive equilibrium is analyzed. The obtained results show the existence of stability switch and provide a method of computing maturation times at which the stability switch occurs. Numerical simulations illustrate that chaos may occur for the model, and the associated parameter bifurcation diagrams are given for certain values of the parameters

    Room-Temperature Pressure Synthesis of Layered Black Phosphorus–Graphene Composite for Sodium-Ion Battery Anodes

    Sodium-ion batteries offer an attractive option for grid-level energy storage due to the high natural abundance of sodium and low material cost of sodium compounds. Phosphorus (P) is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries, with a theoretical capacity of 2596 mAh/g. The red phosphorus (RP) form has worse electronic conductivity and lower initial Coulombic efficiency than black phosphorus (BP), but high material cost and limited production capacity have slowed the development of BP anodes. To address these challenges, we have developed a simple and scalable method to synthesize layered BP/graphene composite (BP/rGO) by pressurization at room temperature. A carbon-black-free and binder-free BP/rGO anode prepared with this method achieved specific charge capacities of 1460.1, 1401.2, 1377.6, 1339.7, 1277.8, 1123.78, and 720.8 mAh/g in a rate capability test at charge and discharge current densities of 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20, and 40 A/g, respectively. In a cycling performance test, after 500 deep cycles, the capacity of BP/rGO anodes stabilized at 1250 and 640 mAh/g at 1 and 40 A/g, respectively, which marks a significant performance improvement for sodium-ion battery anodes

    Does corporate hedging affect firm valuation? Evidence from the IPO market

    Focusing on the IPO market, we examine the influence of corporate hedging on firm valuation. Consistent with the argument that hedging reduces information asymmetry, we find that hedging IPO firms are associated with lower price revisions and underwriting fees. More important, hedging reduces IPO underpricing, especially for informationally opaque firms. This provides strong evidence that corporate hedging increases firm valuation. We also show that corporate hedging lowers aftermarket idiosyncratic volatility, enhances aftermarket liquidity, and improves the long-term performance of IPO firms. We use both an instrumental variable approach and a regulation change on derivatives supply to address endogeneity concerns

    By using the singular perturbation theory on canard cycles, we investigate the canard phenomenon for the Holling-Tanner model with the intrinsic growth rate of the predator small enough.
