    Forepaw Sensorimotor Deprivation in Early Life Leads to the Impairments on Spatial Memory and Synaptic Plasticity in Rats

    To investigate the influence of forepaw sensorimotor deprivation on memory and synaptic plasticity, Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: a sham-operated group and a group deprived of forepaw sensorimotor function by microsurgical operation at postnatal day 13 (PN13). Behavioral and electrophysiological studies were performed at PN25, PN35, PN45, and PN60. Open field test was used to assess the spontaneous locomotor activity. Morris water maze was used to evaluate spatial reference learning and memory. The long-term potentiation (LTP) in the medial perforant pathā€”dentate gyrus (MPP-DG) pathway was examined with hippocampal slices. We found that forepaw sensorimotor deprivation did not affect spontaneous activity of the rats. However, spatial reference learning and memory were significantly impaired in their early life (PN25, PN35, and PN45). In accordance with the behavior results, LTP in MPP-DG pathway was significantly suppressed in their early life. These data demonstrated that forepaw sensorimotor deprivation led to the impairments on spatial memory via inducing pronounced deficits in the MPP-DG pathway to exhibit LTP, one of the major cellular mechanisms underlying learning and memory

    Blood arsenic exposure levels of preschool children and dietary factors analysis

    Objective To explore the blood arsenic exposure levels of preschool children and analyze the factors of blood arsenic. Methods By the multi-stage cluster and simple randomized method, six districts of Shanghai City was chosen and the preschool children in the selected village were asked to fill in the questionnaire and have blood sampling. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to detect blood arsenic, of which the data was analyzed by multiple linear regression models. Marine fish, freshwater fish, freshwater shrimp and shellfish were grouped as follows: ā‰¤3 times per month, 1-3 times per week, and 4-6 times per week. Rice, noodles and milk were grouped as <50, 50-100, and ā‰„100 g/d. Results 2 263 preschool children were recruited. The range of blood arsenic was 0.12-27.94 Ī¼g/L. The median (P25, P75) were 2.26 (1.63, 3.09) Ī¼g/L. Statistical analysis showed that the more intake of rice, wheaten food, and sea fish and shrimp, the more arsenic in childrenā€™s blood (P<0.05). Whereas highter intake of freshwater fish and shrimp group showed decreased blood arsenic (P<0.05). Conclusion Most preschool childrenā€™s blood arsenic levels (92.4%, 2 091/2 263) were at normal level (<5 Ī¼g/L). There was a positive correlation between blood arsenic concentration and the intake of rice, wheaten food, and sea fish and shrimp, while negative correlation with high freshwater fish and shrimp consumption

    Risk of malignancy following exposure to Epstein-Barr Virus associated infectious mononucleosis: A nationwide population-based cohort study

    PurposeEpstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been shown to contribute to oncogenesis and often causes acute clinical manifestation of Infectious mononucleosis (IM). It is unknown whether IM could increase the risk of subsequent malignancies. We aimed to evaluate the association of IM caused by EBV (EBV-IM) with overall and subtypes of malignancy in a large population-based cohort study.MethodsThis study included 1,419,407 individuals born in Denmark between 1973 and 2016 identified from national registers and 23,057 individuals had IM. The 5,394 of them had confirmed EBV-IM and they were birth date- and sex- matched (1:63) to 1,396,350 non-IM individuals. Cox regression was used to examine the associations of EBV-IM with malignancy.ResultsIndividuals with a history of confirmed EBV-IM had an 88% increased overall risk of malignancy (hazard ratio [HR]:1Ā·88, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1Ā·42ā€“2Ā·49) and a five-fold risk of hematologic malignancies (HR 5Ā·04, 95% CI: 3Ā·07ā€“8Ā·25), compared to those without IM. Similar estimates were observed in the sibling analysis. The overall risk of malignancy was greater for EBV-IM with complications (HR 8Ā·93, 95% CI: 3Ā·35ā€“23Ā·81) than that for EBV-IM without complications (HR 1Ā·35, 95% CI: 1Ā·20ā€“1Ā·53). EBV-IM duration was related to increased risk of malignancy in a dose-response way. Notably, the significant elevated risk of overall malignancy was observed in the first two years after EBV-IM onset (rate ratio [RR] 4Ā·44, 95% CI: 2Ā·75ā€“7Ā·17) and attenuated thereafter.ConclusionEBV-IM was associated with an increased risk in malignancy, particularly hematologic malignancies and in the first two years following IM exposure. Our findings suggest an important time-window for early screening of the EBV-attributed malignancy

    Prevalence and risk factors of childhood allergic diseases in eight metropolitan cities in China: A multicenter study

    Background Several studies conducted during the past two decades suggested increasing trend of childhood allergic diseases in China. However, few studies have provided detailed description of geographic variation and explored risk factors of these diseases. This study investigated the pattern and risk factors of asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema in eight metropolitan cities in China. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey during November-December 2005 in eight metropolitan cities in China. A total of 23791 children aged 6-13 years participated in this survey. Questions from the standard questionnaire of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) were used to examine the pattern of current asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the risk factors for childhood allergies. Results The average prevalence of childhood asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema across the eight cities was 3āˆ™3% (95% Confidence interval (CI): 3āˆ™1%, 3āˆ™6%), 9āˆ™8% (95% CI: 9āˆ™4%, 10āˆ™2%) and 5āˆ™5% (95% CI: 5āˆ™2%, 5āˆ™8%), respectively. Factors related to lifestyle, mental health and socio-economic status were found to be associated with the prevalence of childhood allergies. These risk factors were unevenly distributed across cities and disproportionately affected the local prevalence. Conclusions There was apparent geographic variation of childhood allergies in China. Socio-environmental factors had strong impacts on the prevalence of childhood allergies; but these impacts differed across regions. Thus public health policies should specifically target at the local risk factors for each individual area

    Regular breakfast and blood lead levels among preschool children

    Background: Previous studies have shown that fasting increases lead absorption in the gastrointestinal tract of adults. Regular meals/snacks are recommended as a nutritional intervention for lead poisoning in children, but epidemiological evidence of links between fasting and blood lead levels (B-Pb) is rare. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between eating a regular breakfast and B-Pb among children using data from the China Jintan Child Cohort Study. Methods. Parents completed a questionnaire regarding children's breakfast-eating habit (regular or not), demographics, and food frequency. Whole blood samples were collected from 1,344 children for the measurements of B-Pb and micronutrients (iron, copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium). B-Pb and other measures were compared between children with and without regular breakfast. Linear regression modeling was used to evaluate the association between regular breakfast and log-transformed B-Pb. The association between regular breakfast and risk of lead poisoning (B-Pb10 g/dL) was examined using logistic regression modeling. Results: Median B-Pb among children who ate breakfast regularly and those who did not eat breakfast regularly were 6.1 g/dL and 7.2 g/dL, respectively. Eating breakfast was also associated with greater zinc blood levels. Adjusting for other relevant factors, the linear regression model revealed that eating breakfast regularly was significantly associated with lower B-Pb (beta = -0.10 units of log-transformed B-Pb compared with children who did not eat breakfast regularly, p = 0.02). Conclusion: The present study provides some initial human data supporting the notion that eating a regular breakfast might reduce B-Pb in young children.     Blood Lead Levels and Risk Factors among Preschool Children in a Lead Polluted Area in Taizhou, China

    Objective. To determine the blood lead levels and identify related risk factors among preschool children in a lead polluted area (Taizhou, China) and provide theoretical support for prevention of lead pollution. Methods. A stratified-clustered-random sampling method was used to determine the survey sample. Blood lead levels were determined by the tungsten atomizer absorption spectrophotometer. Results. A total of 2,018 subjects (average age of 59 months; 1,087 boys and 931 girls) were included. The arithmetic mean, geometric mean, and median blood lead levels of the preschool children were 56.4ā€‰Ī¼g/L, 48.9ā€‰Ī¼g/L, and 46ā€‰Ī¼g/L. A total of 8.8% children had blood lead levels >100ā€‰Ī¼g/L and 43.9% had blood lead levels >50ā€‰Ī¼g/L. Motherā€™s education level, fatherā€™s occupation, decorative tableware, exposure to makeup, and the residential floor were all risk factors for elevated blood lead levels (odds ratios of 1.42, 1.21, 1.11, 1.19, and 1.27, resp.), while hand washing before eating food was a protective factor (odds ratio of 0.88). Conclusions. The blood lead levels of preschool children in Taizhou were higher than in other areas in China and in developed countries. Therefore, policies ensuring lead-based industries are not placed in close proximity to residential areas are required

    Environmental lead exposure among preschool children in Shanghai, China: blood lead levels and risk factors.

    OBJECTIVE: To determine blood lead levels and to identify related risk factors among children in Shanghai; to explore the lead change trend of children after industrial transformation and to provide data for policy development to control environmental lead pollution in Shanghai. METHODS: A stratified-clustered-random sampling method was used. A tungsten atomizer absorption spectrophotometer was employed to determine blood lead levels. RESULTS: The arithmetic mean, geometric mean and median of blood lead levels of 0- to 6-year-old children from Shanghai were 22.49 Āµg/L, 19.65 Āµg/L and 19.5 Āµg/L, including 0.26% (6/2291) with concentrations ā‰„100 Āµg/L and 2.7% (61/2291) with concentrations ā‰„50 Āµg/L. Boys' levels (23.57 Āµg/L) were greater than those of girls (21.2 Āµg/L). The blood lead levels increased with age. This survey showed that the Chongming district was the highest and Yangpu district was the lowest, this result is completely opposite with the earlier survey in Shanghai. Risk factors for lead contamination included housing environment, parents' education levels, social status, hobbies, and children's nutritional status. CONCLUSIONS: The blood lead levels of children in Shanghai were lower than the earlier data of Shanghai and those of published studies in China, but higher than the blood lead levels of developed countries. The blood lead levels of urban districts are higher than the central districts with the industrial transformation. Society and the government should take an active interest in childhood lead poisoning of urban areas
