Tracking Control of Vertical Pneumatic Artificial Muscle System Using PID
The advantages of pneumatic system such as compactness, high power to weight ratio, ease of maintenance, cleanliness and inherent safety led to the development of McKibben muscle and pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM). However, the air compressibility and the lack of damping ability of PAM bring dynamic delay to the pressure response and causes oscillatory motion to occur. It is not easy to realize the motion with high accuracy and high speed due to all the non-linear characteristics of pneumatic system. In this paper, we present a vertical PAM system with a simple PID controller to control the motion of the PAM. The experiment setup is explained and Ziegler Nichols tuning method is used in getting the approximation PID parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is demonstrated through experiments
Effects of a portion design plate on food group guideline adherence among hospital staff
Food group guideline adherence is vital to prevent obesity and diabetes. Various studies have demonstrated that environmental variables influence food intake behaviour. In the present study we examined the effect of a portion design plate with food group portion guidelines demarcated by coloured lines (ETE Plate™).
A two-group quasi-experimental design was used to measure proportions of carbohydrate, vegetable and protein portions and user experience in a hospital staff lounge setting in Singapore. Lunch was served on the portion design plate before 12.15 hours. For comparison, a normal plate (without markings) was used after 12.15 hours. Changes in proportions of food groups from 2 months before the introduction of the design plate were analysed in a stratified sample at baseline (859 subjects, all on normal plates) to 1, 3 and 6 months after (in all 1016 subjects on the design plate, 968 subjects on the control plate).
A total of 151 participants were asked about their experiences and opinions. Between-group comparisons were performed using ___t___ tests. Among those served on the portion design plate at 6 months after its introduction, the proportion of vegetables was 4·71 % (P < 0·001) higher and that of carbohydrates 2·83 % (P < 0·001) lower relative to the baseline. No significant change was found for proteins (−1·85 %).
Over 6 months, we observed different change patterns between the different food group proportions. While participants were positive about the portion design plate, they did not think it would influence their personal behaviour. A portion design plate might stimulate food group guideline adherence among hospital staff and beyond
Increasing rates of fluoroquinolone resistance in escherichia coli isolated from the blood and urine of patients with hematologic malignancies and stem cell transplant recipients
Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics have been shown to reduce mortality and the number of febrile episodes when used as prophylaxis during neutropenia. Prior studies suggest that prophylaxis may result in increasing rates of FQ resistance. Fluoroquinolone non-susceptibility trends in Escherichia coli isolated from blood and urine cultures were evaluated over a 16-year period during which prophylaxis was initiated in patients with hematologic malignancies and stem cell transplants. Non-susceptibility rates increased after the introduction of prophylaxis, with yearly non-susceptibility rates rising from 30%–33% to 40%–88% in blood isolates. The high rates of non-susceptibility now observed raise concerns about the continued efficacy of FQ prophylaxis. This concern exists particularly in those patients undergoing stem cell transplants where the total FQ non-susceptibility rates over the study period were 82.3%. Further evaluation of the effect of FQ prophylaxis on antibiotic resistance and its efficacy in the setting of increased rates of resistance is warranted
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcal Bloodstream Infections in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients and Patients with Hematologic Malignancies: Impact of Daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L
Purpose Case reports of treatment failure with standard-dose daptomycin (6 mg/kg) have recently surfaced in vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) bloodstream infection (BSI) episodes with daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L. The clinical implications of daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L in VRE BSIs have not been elucidated. Methods We performed a single institutional retrospective analysis of adult stem cell transplant recipients and patients with hematologic malignancies diagnosed with VRE BSI from 2006 to 2014 and compared outcomes between those with daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L those with 2 mg/L, as determined by Etest. Findings Forty-two daptomycin-treated VRE BSI episodes, all due to Enterococcus faecium were identified; 19 episodes with daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L and 23 episodes with a daptomycin MIC of 2 mg/L. Patients in the higher daptomycin MIC group were more likely to be male, to be stem cell transplant recipients, and to have received high-dose daptomycin treatment (>6 mg/kg). In unadjusted analyses, microbiological failure in the daptomycin MICs 3 to 4 mg/L versus 2 mg/L groups (odds ratio = 1.79, 95% CI, 0.52–6.11; P = 0.35), the median duration of bacteremia (4 days in daptomycin MICs 3–4 mg/L vs 3 days in daptomycin MIC 2 mg/L; P = 0.18) and all-cause 30-day mortality (21% in daptomycin MICs 3–4 mg/L vs 35% in daptomycin MIC 2 mg/L group; P = 0.49) were not different. In adjusted analyses, the association between higher Pitt bacteremia scores and all-cause 30-day mortality was statistically significant (P = 0.0006), whereas the association between daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L and all-cause 30-day mortality approached statistical significance (P = 0.06). Implications Duration of bacteremia and microbiological failure rates did not differ by daptomycin MICs in VRE BSI episodes in our patients, composed of adult stem cell transplant recipients and patients with hematologic malignancies. There was a nonsignificant trend in multivariable analysis suggesting that all-cause 30-day mortality was lower in patients whose VRE bloodstream isolates were with daptomycin MICs of 3 to 4 mg/L
Top Quark Decays into Heavy Quark Mesons
For top quark decays into heavy quark mesons and , a
complete calculation to the leading order both in QCD coupling constant
and in , the typical velocity of the heavy quarks inside the
mesons, is performed. Relatons between the top quark mass and the decay
branching ratios are studied. Comparion with the results which are obtained by
using the quark frangmentation functions is also discussed. The branching
ratios are consistent (within a factor of ) with that obtained using
fragmentation functions at GeV.Comment: 15 pages in LaTex form, 4 figures include
Exome sequencing of family trios from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study: Tapping into a rich resource of genetic and environmental data
Background: The National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) is a multisite, population-based, case–control study of genetic and nongenetic risk factors for major structural birth defects. Eligible women had a pregnancy affected by a birth defect or a liveborn child without a birth defect between 1997 and 2011. They were invited to complete a telephone interview to collect pregnancy exposure data and were mailed buccal cell collection kits to collect specimens from themselves, their child (if living), and their child's father. Over 23,000 families representing more than 30 major structural birth defects provided DNA specimens. Methods: To evaluate their utility for exome sequencing (ES), specimens from 20 children with colonic atresia were studied. Evaluations were conducted on specimens collected using cytobrushes stored and transported in open versus closed packaging, on native genomic DNA (gDNA) versus whole genome amplified (WGA) products and on a library preparation protocol adapted to low amounts of DNA. Results: The DNA extracted from brushes in open packaging yielded higher quality sequence data than DNA from brushes in closed packaging. Quality metrics of sequenced gDNA were consistently higher than metrics from corresponding WGA products and were consistently high when using a low input protocol. Conclusions: This proof-of-principle study established conditions under which ES can be applied to NBDPS specimens. Successful sequencing of exomes from well-characterized NBDPS families indicated that this unique collection can be used to investigate the roles of genetic variation and gene–environment interaction effects in birth defect etiologies, providing a valuable resource for birth defect researchers
