How does technology startups increase innovative performance? The study of technology startups on innovation focusing on employment change in Korea
As the fourth industrial revolution has been emerging, there are concerns of labor forces being replaced by technology, recent interest on the work-life balance, and the quality of employment has received attention. This study investigates the role of technology startups on employment and innovative performance. Using empirical data from workplace panel data provided by the Korea Labor Institute, this study reveals that technology startups impact the employment quality and innovative performance by the action of technological innovation. The results highlight the quality of employment as a driver for innovative performance in technology startups. The results of this study will provide practical implications for enhancing technology entrepreneurship
Quantum carpet interferometry for trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose an ``interferometric'' scheme for Bose-Einstein condensates using
near-field diffraction. The scheme is based on the phenomenon of intermode
traces or quantum carpets; we show how it may be used in the detection of weak
forces.Comment: 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
In vitro selection of salt-tolerant Ailanthus altissimaSwingle
Salt-tolerant cell lines of Ailanthus altissima were selected from callus derived protoplasts. Murashige–Skoog (MS) liquid medium incorporated with various concentrations of NaCl was employed to enrich salt-tolerant A. altissima cell lines. Salt-resistant A. altissima cells were transferred on MS solid medium supplemented with 2.5 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), 0.5 μM benzyl adenine (BA) and various NaCl concentrations. The callus was cultured on MS medium containing NaCl for 5 months, to determine the survival rate as an index of salt tolerance. The measurement of growth parameters for salt-tolerant cells showed that the selected plant cell lines grew better than the unselected ones at all levels of NaCl tested. The salt-tolerant callus accumulated proline in correlation to the concentration of salts. Media supplemented with BA induced shoot differentiation of salt-resistant A. altissima cells
Granular discharge and clogging for tilted hoppers
We measure the flux of spherical glass beads through a hole as a systematic
function of both tilt angle and hole diameter, for two different size beads.
The discharge increases with hole diameter in accord with the Beverloo relation
for both horizontal and vertical holes, but in the latter case with a larger
small-hole cutoff. For large holes the flux decreases linearly in cosine of the
tilt angle, vanishing smoothly somewhat below the angle of repose. For small
holes it vanishes abruptly at a smaller angle. The conditions for zero flux are
discussed in the context of a {\it clogging phase diagram} of flow state vs
tilt angle and ratio of hole to grain size

Conductance of tubular nanowires with disorder
We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many
potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the
scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory
of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big
enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from
the localized to the metallic regimes. Nevertheless, a conspicuous drop in
conductance is predicted whenever a new transverse channel is open. Comparison
with the semiclassical calculation leading to purely ohmic behavior is made.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Enhanced production of tropane alkaloids in transgenic Scopolia parviflora hairy root cultures over-expressing putrescine N-methyl transferase (PMT) and hyoscyamine-6β-hydroxylase (H6H)
Scopolia parviflora adventitious roots were metabolically engineered by co-expression of the two gene putrescine N-methyl transferase (PMT) and hyoscyamine-6β-hydroxylase (H6H) cDNAs with the aid of Agrobacterium rhizogenes. The transformed roots developed into morphologically distinct S. parviflora PMT1 (SpPMT1), S. parviflora PMT1 (SpPMT2), and S. parviflora H6H (SpH6H) transgenic hairy root lines. Consequent to the introduction of these key enzyme genes, the production of the alkaloids hyoscyamine and scopolamine was enhanced. Among the transgenic hairy root lines, SpPMT2 line possessed the highest growth index. The treatment of transgenic hairy roots with growth regulators further enhanced the production of scopolamine. Thus, the results suggest that PMT1, PMT2, and H6H genes may not only be involved in the metabolic regulation of alkaloid production but also that these genes may play a role in the root development
Effect of supplementing terpenoid biosynthetic precursors on the accumulation of bilobalide and ginkgolides in Ginkgo biloba cell cultures
The effect of precursor feeding on the production of bilobalide and ginkgolides was studied with suspension cell cultures of Ginkgo biloba. The precursors greatly influenced the productivity of bilobalide and ginkgolides. Precursor supplementation increased the accumulation of both bilobalide and ginkgolides, and with positive effect on cell growth. The GA accumulation by cell cultures was influenced by precursors upstream in the metabolism, whereas the BB accumulation was under the influence of downstream precursors of the terpenoid biosynthetic pathway. Furthermore, precursor feeding modified the ratios of the BB, GA and GB in cells and cell cultures of G. biloba. The studies also aid in understanding effect of precursor feeding on the bilobalide and ginkgolides biosynthetic pathway. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
A Multilevel Product Model for Simulation-Based Design of Mechanical Systems
This paper presents a multilevel product model that supports Simulation-Based Design (SBD) of mechanical systems, from pre liminary to detailed design stages The pnmary goal of the SBD is to achieve product designs featuring better performance and greater du rability and reliability through computer-based modeling, engineering analysis, and design trade-off. A Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model combined with engineering parameters and mathematical equations that simulate physical behavior of the mechanical system constitute its product model for SBD. For preliminary design, improvement of system performance, including dynamics and human factors, is usually the primary focus A CAD model with reasonably accurate physical parameters, such as mass properties of major components or assemblies, is defined as the base definition of the product model for SBD. A number of simulation models are derived from the base definition to sup port simulation of the mechanical system performance A parametric study can be conducted to search for design alternatives using dimen sion parameters created in the parameterized CAD model. The CAD model and base definition are then refined from the preliminary design stage to support intermediate designs. Intermediate designs will primarily focus on product subsystem performance. A product model is evolved by refining geometric representation of mechanical components in CAD, and expanding product assembly into parts and sub assemblies for further engineering analysis Component designs for performance, such as fatigue, mechanical reliability, and structural per formance, as well as maintainability are the primary focus in the detailed design stage. A detailed product model evolved from that of the previous design is needed In the detailed design stage, a systematic design trade-off method supports design improvement. A High Mobil ity Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) is employed to illustrate and demonstrate the proposed product model.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
