Applications of sensitivity analysis for probit stochastic network equilibrium
Network equilibrium models are widely used by traffic practitioners to aid them in making decisions concerning the operation and management of traffic networks. The common practice is to test a prescribed range of hypothetical changes or policy measures through adjustments to the input data, namely the trip demands, the arc performance (travel time) functions, and policy variables such as tolls or signal timings. Relatively little use is, however, made of the full implicit relationship between model inputs and outputs inherent in these models. By exploiting the representation of such models as an equivalent optimisation problem, classical results on the sensitivity analysis of non-linear programs may be applied, to produce linear relationships between input data perturbations and model outputs. We specifically focus on recent results relating to the probit Stochastic User Equilibrium (PSUE) model, which has the advantage of greater behavioural realism and flexibility relative to the conventional Wardrop user equilibrium and logit SUE models. The paper goes on to explore four applications of these sensitivity expressions in gaining insight into the operation of road traffic networks. These applications are namely: identification of sensitive, ‘critical’ parameters; computation of approximate, re-equilibrated solutions following a change (post-optimisation); robustness analysis of model forecasts to input data errors, in the form of confidence interval estimation; and the solution of problems of the bi-level, optimal network design variety. Finally, numerical experiments applying these methods are reported
Spatial Analysis of Rural Economic Development Using a Locally Weighted Regression Model
This study uses locally weighted regression to identify county-level characteristics that serve as drivers of creative employment throughout the southern United States. We found that higher per capita income, greater infrastructure investments, and the rural nature of a county tended to promote creative employment density, while higher scores on a natural amenity index had the opposite effect. We were also able to identify and map clusters of rural counties where the marginal effects of these variables on creative employment density were greatest. An experimental study of sound radiation from hyperboloidal inlet ducts
Sound radiation from hyperboloidal inlet ducts which include a circular cylinder with plane baffle as a limiting case was investigated. Results include the polar angle variation of the pressure level and the phase of the radiated field for various frequencies and various modes incident which were produced using an electronically operated mode synthesizer. Good agreement with a rigorous theoretical prediction was found
Modelling network travel time reliability under stochastic demand
A technique is proposed for estimating the probability distribution of total network travel time, in the light of normal day-to-day variations in the travel demand matrix over a road traffic network. A solution method is proposed, based on a single run of a standard traffic assignment model, which operates in two stages. In stage one, moments of the total travel time distribution are computed by an analytic method, based on the multivariate moments of the link flow vector. In stage two, a flexible family of density functions is fitted to these moments. It is discussed how the resulting distribution may in practice be used to characterise unreliability. Illustrative numerical tests are reported on a simple network, where the method is seen to provide a means for identifying sensitive or vulnerable links, and for examining the impact on network reliability of changes to link capacities. Numerical simulations of stellar SiO maser variability. Investigation of the effect of shocks
A stellar hydrodynamic pulsation model has been combined with a SiO maser
model in an attempt to calculate the temporal variability of SiO maser emission
in the circumstellar envelope (CE) of a model AGB star. This study investigates
whether the variations in local physical conditions brought about by shocks are
the predominant contributing factor to SiO maser variability because, in this
work, the radiative part of the pump is constant. We find that some aspects of
the variability are not consistent with a pump provided by shock-enhanced
collisions alone. In these simulations, gas parcels of relatively enhanced SiO
abundance are distributed in a model CE by a Monte Carlo method, at a single
epoch of the stellar cycle. From this epoch on, Lagrangian motions of
individual parcels are calculated according to the velocity fields encountered
in the model CE during the stellar pulsation cycle. The potentially masing gas
parcels therefore experience different densities and temperatures, and have
varying line-of-sight velocity gradients throughout the stellar cycle, which
may or may not be suitable to produce maser emission. At each epoch (separated
by 16.6 days), emission lines from the parcels are combined to produce
synthetic spectra and VLBI-type images. We report here the results for v=1,

Peer assessment as collaborative learning
Peer assessment is an important component of a more participatory culture of learning. The articles collected in this special issue constitute a representative kaleidoscope of current research on peer assessment. In this commentary, we argue that research on peer assessment is currently in a stage of adolescence, grappling with the developmental tasks of identity formation and affiliation. Identity formation may be achieved by efforts towards a shared terminology and joint theory building, whereas affiliation may be reached by a more systematic consideration of research in related fields. To reach identity formation and affiliation, preliminary ideas for a cognitively toned, process-related model of peer assessment and links to related research fields, especially to research on collaborative learning, are presented
Resistivity peak values at transition between fractional quantum Hall states
Experimental data available in the literature for peak values of the diagonal
resistivity in the transitions between fractional quantum Hall states are
compared with the theoretical predictions. It is found that the majority of the
peak values are close to the theoretical values for two-dimensional systems

Decay and Scattering
Using chiral low energy theorems and elastic unitarity assumption, the
decay is investigated. The vector and scalar form
factors are calculated. It is found that the spectrum is dominated by
the resonance. By measuring the forward-backward asymmetry, it is shown
that the S wave phase shift can be determined near the
resonance region. The calculated branching ratio and resonance parameters are
