Monopoles and Knots in Skyrme Theory
We show that the Skyrme theory actually is a theory of monopoles which allows
a new type of solitons, the topological knots made of monopole-anti-monopole
pair, which is different from the well-known skyrmions. Furthermore, we derive a
generalized Skyrme action from the Yang-Mills action of QCD, which we propose
to be an effective action of QCD in the infra-red limit. We discuss the
physical implications of our results.Comment: 4 pages. Phys. Rev. Lett. in pres
Gauge Independent Trace Anomaly for Gravitons
We show that the trace anomaly for gravitons calculated using the usual
effective action formalism depends on the choice of gauge when the background
spacetime is not a solution of the classical equation of motion, that is, when
off-shell. We then use the gauge independent Vilkovisky-DeWitt effective action
to restore gauge independence to the off-shell case. Additionally we explicitly
evaluate trace anomalies for some N-sphere background spacetimes.Comment: 19 pages, additional references and title chang
Motion Deblurring in the Wild
The task of image deblurring is a very ill-posed problem as both the image
and the blur are unknown. Moreover, when pictures are taken in the wild, this
task becomes even more challenging due to the blur varying spatially and the
occlusions between the object. Due to the complexity of the general image model
we propose a novel convolutional network architecture which directly generates
the sharp image. This network is built in three stages, and exploits the
benefits of pyramid schemes often used in blind deconvolution. One of the main
difficulties in training such a network is to design a suitable dataset. While
useful data can be obtained by synthetically blurring a collection of images,
more realistic data must be collected in the wild. To obtain such data we use a
high frame rate video camera and keep one frame as the sharp image and frame
average as the corresponding blurred image. We show that this realistic dataset
is key in achieving state-of-the-art performance and dealing with occlusions
Abelian Dominance in Wilson Loops
It has been conjectured that the Abelian projection of QCD is responsible for
the confinement of color. Using a gauge independent definition of the Abelian
projection which does {\it not} employ any gauge fixing, we provide a strong
evidence for the Abelian dominance in Wilson loop integral. In specific we
prove that the gauge potential which contributes to the Wilson loop integral is
precisely the one restricted by the Abelian projection.Comment: 4 pages, no figure, revtex. Phys. Rev. D in pres
Zeta-Functions for Non-Minimal Operators
We evaluate zeta-functions at for invariant non-minimal
2nd-order vector and tensor operators defined on maximally symmetric even
dimensional spaces. We decompose the operators into their irreducible parts and
obtain their corresponding eigenvalues. Using these eigenvalues, we are able to
explicitly calculate for the cases of Euclidean spaces and
-spheres. In the -sphere case, we make use of the Euler-Maclaurin formula
to develop asymptotic expansions for the required sums. The resulting
values for dimensions 2 to 10 are given in the Appendix.Comment: 26 pages, additional reference
Partially Dual variables in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory
We propose a reformulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in terms of new
variables. These variables are appropriate for describing the theory in its
infrared limit, and indicate that it admits knotlike configurations as stable
solitons. As a consequence we arrive at a dual picture of the Yang-Mills theory
where the short distance limit describes asymptotically free, massless point
gluons and the large distance limit describes extended, massive knotlike
solitons.Comment: 4 pages, revtex twocolum
Wilsonian effective action for SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov decomposition
The Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov decomposition of the SU(2) Yang-Mills field is
employed for the calculation of the corresponding Wilsonian effective action to
one-loop order with covariant gauge fixing. The generation of a mass scale is
observed, and the flow of the marginal couplings is studied. Our results
indicate that higher-derivative terms of the color-unit-vector
field are necessary for the description of topologically stable knotlike
solitons which have been conjectured to be the large-distance degrees of
freedom.Comment: 15 pages, no figures, v2: minor improvements, one reference added,

Purification through Zeno-like Measurements
A series of frequent measurements on a quantum system (Zeno-like
measurements) is shown to result in the ``purification'' of another quantum
system in interaction with the former. Even though the measurements are
performed on the former system, their effect drives the latter into a pure
state, irrespectively of its initial (mixed) state, provided certain conditions
are satisfied.Comment: REVTeX4, 4 pages, 1 figure; to be published in Phys. Rev. Lett.

Scattering of Cosmic Rays by Magnetohydrodynamic Interstellar Turbulence
Recent advances in understanding of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence call
for substantial revisions in our understanding of cosmic ray transport. In this
paper we use gyroresonance recently obtained scaling laws for MHD modes to
calculate the scattering frequency for cosmic rays in the ISM. We consider
gyroresonance with MHD modes (Alfvenic, slow and fast) and transit-time damping
(TTD) by fast modes. We conclude that the gyroresonance with fast modes is the
dominant contribution to cosmic ray scattering for the typical interstellar
conditions. In contrast to earlier studies, we find that Alfvenic and slow
modes are inefficient because they are far from isotropy usually assumed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Phys. Rev. Lett. in press, minor change
