Spacetime structure of 5D hypercylindrical vacuum solutions with tension

We investigate geometrical properties of 5D cylindrical vacuum solutions with a transverse spherical symmetry. The metric is uniform along the fifth direction and characterized by tension and mass densities. The solutions are classified by the tension-to-mass ratio. One particular example is the well-known Schwarzschild black string which has a curvature singularity enclosed by a horizon. We focus mainly on geometry of other solutions which possess a naked singularity. The light signal emitted by an object approaching the singularity reaches a distant observer with finite time, but is infinitely red-shifted.Comment: revtex4, 5 pages, 2 figures. Private Enforcement of NAFTA Environmental Standards through Transnational Mass Tort Litigation: The Role of United States Courts in the Age of Free Trade Symposium - The Environment and the United States-Mexico Border - Comment.

Maquiladoras are manufacturing facilities along the United States-Mexico border operated by transnational corporations (TNCs). The arrival of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) meant TNCs are free to move capital and operations across the United States-Mexico border at will. Yet, the maquiladora workers are not free to travel or seek employment across the border. The NAFTA debate in the United States raised public awareness of environmental problems in the border region. Nevertheless, maquiladora workers have lived with environmental degradation long before the NAFTA environmental debate began. With the passage of NAFTA, increased trade and the burgeoning industries along the border are likely to exacerbate already serious environmental problems. The question of a foreign plaintiff’s freedom to choose a jurisdiction in which to sue for injuries resulting from environmental pollution is complicated by the questions of public policy and forum non conveniens considerations. Courts must weigh the interests of the United States government and citizens in resolving claims arising from injuries suffered by a Mexican plaintiff in Mexico. When United States courts face environmental tort claims brought by NAFTA nationals, the traditional forum non conveniens doctrine does not seem to fit or serve any meaningful policy goals. A better approach is the abolition of the forum non convenience doctrine. Such an abolition would eliminate any ambiguity regarding the accessibility of the United States courts to exploited workers and residents of a “free trade partner country,” and provide the most effective deterrence to future abuses and exploitation. In an age where national borders are practically removed for TNCs but still remain a solid wall to the citizens of different nations, the “judicial border” of forum non conveniens erected against maquiladora workers not only loses its logical justifications, it also works against the interest of the United States public as well

    LHC Signature of Mirage Mediation

    Get PDF
We study LHC phenomenology of mirage mediation scenario in which anomaly and modulus contributions to soft SUSY breaking terms are comparable to each other. A Monte Carlo study of mirage mediation, with model parameters α=1\alpha=1,M0=500 M_0=500 GeV, nM=1/2n_M=1/2, nH=1n_H=1 and tanÎČ=10\rm{tan}\beta=10, is presented. It is shown that masses of supersymmetric particles can be measured in a model independent way, providing information on SUSY breaking sector. In particular, the mass ratio of gluino to the lightest neutralino for the benchmark scenario is determined to be 1.9 \lesssim m_{\tildeg}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \lesssim 3.1, well reproducing theoretical input value of mg~/mχ~10≃2.5m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \simeq 2.5 which is quite distinctive from the predictions mg~/mχ~10≳6m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tilde\chi_1^0} \gtrsim 6 of other SUSY scenarios in which gaugino masses are unified at the GUT scale. The model parameters of mirage mediation can be also determined from various kinematic distributions

Rgs1 and Gnai2 Regulate the Entrance of B Lymphocytes into Lymph Nodes and B Cell Motility within Lymph Node Follicles

SummarySignaling by G protein-coupled receptors coupled to Gαi assists in triggering lymphocyte movement into and out of lymph nodes. Here, we show that modulating the signaling output from these receptors dramatically alters B cell trafficking. Intravital microscopy of adoptively transferred B cells from wild-type and Rgs1−/− mice revealed that Rgs1−/− B cells stick better to lymph node high endothelial venules, home better to lymph nodes, and move more rapidly within lymph node follicles than do wild-type B cells. In contrast, B cells from Gnai2−/− mice enter lymph nodes poorly and move more slowly than do wild-type B cells. The Gnai2−/− mice often lack multiple peripheral lymph nodes, and their B cells respond poorly to chemokines, indicating that Gαi1 and Gαi3 poorly compensate for the loss of Gαi2. These results demonstrate opposing roles for Rgs1 and Gnai2 in B cell trafficking into and within lymph nodes

One-Parameter Squeezed Gaussian States of Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator and Selection Rule for Vacuum States

By using the invariant method we find one-parameter squeezed Gaussian states for both time-independent and time-dependent oscillators. The squeezing parameter is expressed in terms of energy expectation value for time-independent case and represents the degree of mixing positive and negative frequency solutions for time-dependent case. A {\it minimum uncertainty proposal} is advanced to select uniquely vacuum states at each moment of time. We show that the Gaussian states with minimum uncertainty coincide with the true vacuum state for time-independent oscillator and the Bunch-Davies vacuum for a massive scalar field in a de Sitter spacetime.Comment: 13 Pages, ReVTeX, no figure

Cough persistence in adults with chronic cough: a 4-year retrospective cohort study

    Get PDF
BackgroundThere is very limited evidence regarding long-term prognosis of chronic cough. We examined longitudinal outcomes among patients with chronic cough, and explored predictors of cough persistence.MethodsA retrospective cohort was constructed of adults who had newly visited a specialist cough clinic in 2012–2013. All had undergone systematic investigation for chronic cough. The Hull Airway Reflux Questionnaire (HARQ) was administered to assess reflux cough symptoms. A follow-up survey was conducted in 2016–2017 to assess cough persistence.ResultsFrom 418 candidates, 323 participated in the follow-up study; main analyses focused on patients with chronic persistent cough (n=64; 19.8%) and remitted cough (n=193; 59.8%). Compared with remitted cough, chronic persistent cough group had more family history of chronic cough (17.2% vs. 4.7%, p=0.001) and cold air-sensitive cough (62.5% vs. 44.6%, p=0.013). The total HARQ score did not differ; however, two items (cough with eating and cough with certain foods) scored significantly higher in chronic persistent cough. In multivariate analyses, a family history of chronic cough (adjusted odds ratio 4.27 [95% confidence interval 1.35-9.89]), cold air-sensitive cough (2.01 [1.09-3.73]), and cough with eating (1.22 [1.02–1.45]) were associated with chronic persistent cough at 4 years. Conclusions Cough persists in about 20% of patients after 4 years following systematic assessment and treatments. Several cough characteristics, such as family history, cold air-sensitivity, or reflux cough, may be associated with cough persistence. Larger cohort studies are warranted to further understand long-term prognosis and confirm predictors of persistence in patients with chronic cough
