PKCĪµ-mediated ERK1/2 activation involved in radiation-induced cell death in NIH3T3 cells

AbstractProtein kinase C (PKC) isoforms play distinct roles in cellular functions. We have previously shown that ionizing radiation activates PKC isoforms (Ī±, Ī“, Īµ, and Ī¶), however, isoform-specific sensitivities to radiation and its exact mechanisms in radiation mediated signal transduction are not fully understood. In this study, we showed that overexpression of PKC isoforms (Ī±, Ī“, Īµ, and Ī¶) increased radiation-induced cell death in NIH3T3 cells and PKCĪµ overexpression was predominantly responsible. In addition, PKCĪµ overexpression increased ERK1/2 activation without altering other MAP-kinases such as p38 MAPK or JNK. Co-transfection of dominant negative PKCĪµ (PKCĪµ-KR) blocked both PKCĪµ-mediated ERK1/2 activation and radiation-induced cell death, while catalytically active PKCĪµ construction augmented these phenomena. When the PKCĪµ overexpressed cells were pretreated with PD98059, MEK inhibitor, radiation-induced cell death was inhibited. Co-transfection of the cells with a mutant of ERK1 or -2 (ERK1-KR or ERK2-KR) also blocked these phenomena, and co-transfection with dominant negative Ras or Raf cDNA revealed that PKCĪµ-mediated ERK1/2 activation was Rasā€“Raf-dependent. In conclusion, PKCĪµ-mediated ERK1/2 activation was responsible for the radiation-induced cell death

A generalized sub-pixel mapping algorithm for auto-stereoscopic displays using slanted optical plates

Auto-stereoscopic displays using slanted optical plates have inherent subpixel rasterization compared to the normal 2D displays, and mappings between subpixel positions and multi-view indices even vary according to the number of views and angles of slanted optical plates. In this paper, we derive a simple but generalized formula for subpixel mappings from a naĆÆve ray-tracing technique on RGB stripe type panels. To verify the proposed algorithm, our proto-type auto-stereoscopic display using parallax barriers with a slanted angle was used and examined in the experiment. The proposed algorithm is expected to leverage converting multi-view 3D inputs to various types of auto-stereoscopic contents in real time.2nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Information and Communication (ICAIIC 2020), February 19-21, 2020, Fukuoka, Japa

Clinical Characteristics of Radiation Oncology in Korea during Past 10 Years

    Get PDF
To understand trends in the clinical characteristics of radiation oncology over the last 10 yr in Korea, annual survey questionnaires were sent to all of Korean radiation oncology facilities since 1990. Questionnaires addressed basic radiation therapy facilities and the clinical information. Responses were obtained from all facilities, and data collected from 1997 to 2006 was analyzed. The numbers of new patients that have undergone radiation therapy and the numbers of hospitals with a department of radiation oncology have steadily increased over the past 10 yr, and totaled 37,215 patients and 60 hospitals, respectively, in 2006. However, the proportion of patients irradiated among total cancer patients has remained below 30% over the last 10 yr. The numbers of prostate cancer, breast cancer, and hepatoma have increased by more than 3 fold over the past 10 yr. Moreover, the percentage of irradiated patients treated by brachytherapy was 10.3% in 1997, but this gradually fell to only 4.2% in 2006. The information collected described the role played by radiation oncology in Korea. Continuous surveys are required to enable trends to be detected

Mesoscopic Luttinger Liquid Theory in an Aharonov-Bohm Ring

A careful study on the mesoscopic PC in a Luttinger liquid ring is carried out. It is shown that discreteness plays an important role in calculating the PC caused by the magnetic flux. At zero temperature, the current is shown to be independent of the interaction even when g=g2āˆ’g4g=g_2-g_4 is not zero. The current becomes enhanced at finite temperatures comparing to the non-interacting case, when the parameter g is positive.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Version to appear in PR

Spin Fluctuation and Persistent Current in a Mesoscopic Ring Coupled to a Quantum Dot

We investigate the persistent current influenced by the spin fluctuations in a mesoscopic ring weakly coupled to a quantum dot. It is shown that the Kondo effect gives rise to some unusual features of the persistent current in the limit where the charge transfer between two subsystems is suppressed. Various aspects of the crossover from a delocalized to a localized dot limit are discussed in relation with the effect of the coherent response of the Kondo cloud to the Aharonov-Bohm flux.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

BackgroundFood exchange lists are one of the main methods of nutritional education. However, Korean food exchange lists have not been revised since 1994. Therefore, we surveyed the opinions of diabetes educators and patients with diabetes regarding the need for revision of the current food exchange lists.MethodsFor two weeks beginning on 10 March 2008, a 12-item questionnaire regarding the opinion and need for revision of the current food exchange lists was e-mailed to diabetes educators nationwide. Another 15-question survey was administered to patients with diabetes in 13 hospitals located in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions of Korea.ResultsWe obtained survey responses from 101 diabetes educators and 209 patients; 65 (64.3%) of the educators answered that the current food exchange lists should be revised. The items that needed revision were the glycemic index, addition of new foods and reaffirmation of exchange standard amounts. The patients demanded specific education about choosing appropriate foods, a balanced meal plan, proper snacks, and dining intake.ConclusionOur survey results demonstrate the need to revise the Korean food exchange lists. This process should focus on glycemic index, the addition of new foods and reconfirmation of one exchange reference unit
