    Periodic and solitary waves in systems of coherently coupled nonlinear envelope equations

    Exact solutions for two classes of coherently coupled nonlinear envelope equations are derived in terms of products of Jacobi elliptic functions. Physical applications are illustrated in the context of nonlinear optics, namely, polarization of light beams and quadratic (or parametric) solitons. Stabilities of these double-humped solitary pulses are studied by direct numerical simulations. The use of computer is crucial, both in terms of symbolic manipulation in the derivation process and in the implementation of numerical schemes in stability consideration. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.postprin

    The pathology of bone marrow transplantation in Hong Kong Chinese

    The pathological lesions found in 68 successfully engrafted patients with human leucocyte antigen-matched sibling-related bone marrow transplants werereviewed retrospectively. Twenty-six (38%) patients had acute graft-versus-host disease, which was slightly less than that reported in Caucasians. Skin was a constant site of involvement (100%), followed by the gastrointestinal tract (74%) and liver (59%). There was a 74% correlation between the clinical and histological grading of cutaneous graft-versus-host disease, while that of the gastrointestinal tract was lower at 60%. Cytomegalovirus colitis was found on histological examination of two patients clinically thought to have graft-versus-host disease. Histological evidence of infection, which included viral hepatitis (n=5), disseminated cytomegalovirus infection (n=3), disseminated aspergillosis (n=2), systemic candidiasis (n=2), Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (n=1), and bacterial pneumonia (n=1), was present in 14 patients. In addition to graft-versus-host disease and infections, there was a case of veno-occlusive disease of the liver. Histological examination is important in distinguishing graft-versus-host disease from infection and other complications in bone marrow transplantation.published_or_final_versio

    Human coronavirus NL63 infection and other coronavirus infections in children hospitalized with acute respiratory disease in Hong Kong, China

    Background. Human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63) is a recently discovered human coronavirus found to cause respiratory illness in children and adults that is distinct from the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus and human coronaviruses 229E (HCoV-229E) and OC43 (HCoV-OC43). Methods. We investigated the role that HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43, and HCoV-229E played in children hospitalized with fever and acute respiratory symptoms in Hong Kong during the period from August 2001 through August 2002. Results. Coronavirus infections were detected in 26 (4.4%) of 587 children studied; 15 (2.6%) were positive for HCoV-NL63, 9 (1.5%) were positive for HCoV-OC43, and 2 (0.3%) were positive for HCoV-229E. In addition to causing upper respiratory disease, we found that HCoV-NL63 can present as croup, asthma exacerbation, febrile seizures, and high fever. The mean age (± standard deviation [SD]) of the infected children was 30.7 ± 19.8 months (range, 6-57 months). The mean maximum temperature (± SD) for the 12 children who were febrile was 39.3°C ± 0.9°C, and the mean total duration of fever (± SD) for all children was 2.6 ± 1.2 days (range, 1-5 days). HCoV-NL63 infections were noted in the spring and summer months of 2002, whereas HCoV-OC43 infection mainly occurred in the fall and winter months of 2001. HCoV-NL63 viruses appeared to cluster into 2 evolutionary lineages, and viruses from both lineages cocirculated in the same season. Conclusions. HCoV-NL63 is a significant pathogen that contributes to the hospitalization of children, and it was estimated to have caused 224 hospital admissions per 100,000 population aged 6 years each year in Hong Kong. © 2005 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America.     A novel patient with an attenuated Costello syndrome phenotype due to an HRAS mutation affecting codon 146-Literature review and update

    De novo germline mutations in HRAS cause Costello syndrome, with >95% of the mutations causing Costello syndrome affecting amino acid position 12 (p.Gly12) or 13 (p.Gly13). We report on a patient with de novo missense mutation causing an amino acid change at codon 146 of HRAS, c.436G > C:p.Ala146Pro, who presented with subtle dysmorphic features, failure to thrive, global developmental delay, and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Mutations affecting codon 146 are observed in <1% of patients with Costello syndrome. From literature search, there were only two other patients reported with mutations involving the same location. We summarized and updated their findings, and discussed evidence to show that these patients with less obvious signs of Costello syndrome may not necessarily run a more benign clinical course.postprin

    Dementia and risk of visual impairment in Chinese older adults

    We had previously identified visual impairment increasing risk of incident dementia. While a bi-directional vision-cognition association has subsequently been proposed, no study has specifically examined the longitudinal association between dementia and incidence of clinically defined visual impairment. In this territory-wide community cohort study of 10,806 visually unimpaired older adults, we examined their visual acuity annually for 6 years and tested if dementia at baseline was independently associated with higher risk of incident visual impairment (LogMAR ≥ 0.50 in the better eye despite best correction, which is equivalent to moderate visual impairment according to the World Health Organization definition). By the end of Year 6, a total of 3151 (29.2%) participants developed visual impairment. However, we did not find baseline dementia associating with higher risk of incident visual impairment, after controlling for baseline visual acuity, cataract, glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, heart diseases, stroke, Parkinson's disease, depression, hearing and physical impairments, physical, intellectual and social activities, diet, smoking, age, sex, educational level, and socioeconomic status. Among different covariables, baseline visual acuity appears to be more important than dementia in contributing to the development of visual impairment. Our present findings highlight the need for re-evaluating whether dementia is indeed a risk factor for visual impairment
