Two-dimensional quasineutral description of particles and fields above discrete auroral arcs

    Get PDF
Stationary hot and cool particle distributions in the auroral magnetosphere are modelled using adiabatic assumptions of particle motion in the presence of broad-scale electrostatic potential structure. The study has identified geometrical restrictions on the type of broadscale potential structure which can be supported by a multispecies plasma having specified sources and energies. Without energization of cool thermal ionospheric electrons, a substantial parallel potential drop cannot be supported down to altitudes of 2000 km or less. Observed upward-directed field-aligned currents must be closed by return currents along field lines which support little net potential drop. In such regions the plasma density appears significantly enhanced. Model details agree well with recent broad-scale implications of satellite observations

Efficient quantum computation within a disordered Heisenberg spin-chain

We show that efficient quantum computation is possible using a disordered Heisenberg spin-chain with `always-on' couplings. Such disorder occurs naturally in nanofabricated systems. Considering a simple chain setup, we show that an arbitrary two-qubit gate can be implemented using just three relaxations of a controlled qubit, which amounts to switching the on-site energy terms at most twenty-one times.Comment: To appear in Phys. On the structures and mapping of auroral electrostatic potentials

The mapping of magnetospheric and ionospheric electric fields in a kinetic model of magnetospheric-ionospheric electrodynamic coupling proposed for the aurora is examined. One feature is the generalization of the kinetic current-potential relationship to the return current region (identified as a region where the parallel drop from magnetosphere to ionosphere is positive); such a return current always exists unless the ionosphere is electrically charged to grossly unphysical values. A coherent phenomenological picture of both the low energy return current and the high energy precipitation of an inverted-V is given. The mapping between magnetospheric and ionospheric electric fields is phrased in terms of a Green's function which acts as a filter, emphasizing magnetospheric latitudinal spatial scales of order (when mapped to the ionosphere) 50 to 150 km. This same length, when multiplied by electric fields just above the ionosphere, sets the scale for potential drops between the ionosphere and equatorial magnetosphere

Quenched chiral logarithms in lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry

We examine quenched chiral logarithms in lattice QCD with overlap Dirac quark. For 100 gauge configurations generated with the Wilson gauge action at Ī²=5.8 \beta = 5.8 on the 83Ɨ24 8^3 \times 24 lattice, we compute quenched quark propagators for 12 bare quark masses. The pion decay constant is extracted from the pion propagator, and from which the lattice spacing is determined to be 0.147 fm. The presence of quenched chiral logarithm in the pion mass is confirmed, and its coefficient is determined to be Ī“=0.203Ā±0.014 \delta = 0.203 \pm 0.014 , in agreement with the theoretical estimate in quenched chiral perturbation theory. Further, we obtain the topological susceptibility of these 100 gauge configurations by measuring the index of the overlap Dirac operator. Using a formula due to exact chiral symmetry, we obtain the Ī·ā€² \eta' mass in quenched chiral perturbation theory, mĪ·ā€²=(901Ā±64) m_{\eta'} = (901 \pm 64) Mev, and an estimate of Ī“=0.197Ā±0.027 \delta = 0.197 \pm 0.027 , which is in good agreement with that determined from the pion mass.Comment: 24 pages, 6 EPS figures; v2: some clarifications added, to appear in Physical Review

This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. Copyright @ 2009 Taylor & Francis. An analytical method has been developed and applied to determine the concentrations of the nonionic alkylphenol polyethoxylate surfactants and their metabolites, alkylphenoxy carboxylates and alkyphenols, in sewage sludges. The compounds were extracted with methanol/acetone (1:1 v/v) from sludge, and concentrated extracts were cleaned by silica solidā€phase extraction prior to determination by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The recoveries, determined by spiking sewage sludge at two concentrations, ranged from 51% to 89% with method detection limits from 6 Āµg kgāˆ’1 to 60 Āµg kgāˆ’1. The methodology was subsequently applied to sludge samples obtained from a carbonaceous activated sludge plant, a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant and a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant with phosphorus removal. Concentrations of nonylphenolic compounds were two to three times higher than their octyl analogues. Longā€chain nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NP3ā€“12EO) ranged from 16 Āµg kgāˆ’1 to 11754 Āµg kgāˆ’1. The estrogenic metabolite nonylphenol was present at concentrations ranging from 33 Āµg kgāˆ’1 to 6696 Āµg kgāˆ’1.Public Utilities Board of Singapore, Thames Water and Yorkshire Water

    Ceramic automotive Stirling engine study

    Get PDF
A conceptual design study for a Ceramic Automotive Stirling Engine (CASE) is performed. Year 1990 structural ceramic technology is assumed. Structural and performance analyses of the conceptual design are performed as well as a manufacturing and cost analysis. The general conclusions from this study are that such an engine would be 10-26% more efficient over its performance map than the current metal Automotive Stirling Reference Engine (ASRE). Cost of such a ceramic engine is likely to be somewhat higher than that of the ASRE but engine cost is very sensitive to the ultimate cost of the high purity, ceramic powder raw materials required to fabricate high performance parts. When the design study is projected to the year 2000 technology, substantinal net efficiency improvements, on the order of 25 to 46% over the ASRE, are computed

Influence of retardation effects on 2D magnetoplasmon spectrum

Within dissipationless limit the magnetic field dependence of magnetoplasmon spectrum for unbounded 2DEG system found to intersect the cyclotron resonance line, and, then approaches the frequency given by light dispersion relation. Recent experiments done for macroscopic disc-shape 2DEG systems confirm theory expectations.Comment: 2 pages,2 figure
