Medical, Racist, and Colonial Constructions of Power in Anne Fadiman\u27s The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
This essay looks at the values attributed or denied to culture (medical culture, history, Southeast Asian refugees, Asian American cultural citizenship) in the care surrounding a Hmong child diagnosed with spirit loss, according to Hmong interpretation, or epilepsy, as defined by Western medicine. In my reading of Anne Fadiman\u27s The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures, medical, colonial, and authorial knowledge often converge in devastating ways, linking the seemingly disparate discourses of war, refugee medicine, and the model minority through colonial representations. I also look at the book\u27s lacuna in its investigation of cultural collisions, finding that its approaches to reporting the medical-cultural conflict from a seemingly neutral position-one balancing the reported views of the epileptic child\u27s parents and the views of her medical practitioners-often reinscribe the Hmong subjects into the very colonial parameters from which the book attempts to extract them
Quenched chiral logarithms in lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry
We examine quenched chiral logarithms in lattice QCD with overlap Dirac
quark. For 100 gauge configurations generated with the Wilson gauge action at on the lattice, we compute quenched quark
propagators for 12 bare quark masses. The pion decay constant is extracted from
the pion propagator, and from which the lattice spacing is determined to be
0.147 fm. The presence of quenched chiral logarithm in the pion mass is
confirmed, and its coefficient is determined to be , in agreement with the theoretical estimate in quenched chiral perturbation
theory. Further, we obtain the topological susceptibility of these 100 gauge
configurations by measuring the index of the overlap Dirac operator. Using a
formula due to exact chiral symmetry, we obtain the mass in quenched
chiral perturbation theory, Mev, and an estimate
of , which is in good agreement with that

Fate and occurrence of alkylphenolic compounds in sewage sludges determined by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Copyright @ 2009 Taylor & Francis.An analytical method has been developed and applied to determine the concentrations of the nonionic alkylphenol polyethoxylate surfactants and their metabolites, alkylphenoxy carboxylates and alkyphenols, in sewage sludges. The compounds were extracted with methanol/acetone (1:1 v/v) from sludge, and concentrated extracts were cleaned by silica solid‐phase extraction prior to determination by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The recoveries, determined by spiking sewage sludge at two concentrations, ranged from 51% to 89% with method detection limits from 6 µg kg−1 to 60 µg kg−1. The methodology was subsequently applied to sludge samples obtained from a carbonaceous activated sludge plant, a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant and a nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge plant with phosphorus removal. Concentrations of nonylphenolic compounds were two to three times higher than their octyl analogues. Long‐chain nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NP3–12EO) ranged from 16 µg kg−1 to 11754 µg kg−1. Treatment and removal strategies for estrogens from wastewater
Natural and synthetic steroidal estrogens (estrone, 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol) are endocrine disrupters, that are discharged consistently from the sewage treatment works into surface waters, thereby causing endocrine disrupting effects to aquatic organisms at trace concentrations (nanogram per litre). Several years of research have been focused on their fate, behaviour and removal in the environment but primarily in the sewage treatment works which acts as a sink for these compounds. This review attempts to summarize the factors involved in the removal of these chemicals from the sewage treatment works. Biological processes, and to a limited extent physio-chemical properties, play a vital role in the endocrinal deactivation of which these compounds. The efficiency of these processes is highly dependent on operating parameters (such as sludge retention time, redox potential, etc) that govern the secondary treatment process of a functional sewage treatment works. Although advanced treatment technologies are available, cost and operational considerations do not make them a sustainable solution
A note on Zolotarev optimal rational approximation for the overlap Dirac operator
We discuss the salient features of Zolotarev optimal rational approximation
for the inverse square root function, in particular, for its applications in
lattice QCD with overlap Dirac quark. The theoretical error bound for the
matrix-vector multiplication is derived. We check that
the error bound is always satisfied amply, for any QCD gauge configurations we
have tested. An empirical formula for the error bound is determined, together
with its numerical values (by evaluating elliptic functions) listed in Table 2
as well as plotted in Figure 3. Our results suggest that with Zolotarev
approximation to , one can practically preserve the exact
chiral symmetry of the overlap Dirac operator to very high precision, for any

Limits on MeV Dark Matter from the Effective Number of Neutrinos
Thermal dark matter that couples more strongly to electrons and photons than
to neutrinos will heat the electron-photon plasma relative to the neutrino
background if it becomes nonrelativistic after the neutrinos decouple from the
thermal background. This results in a reduction in N_eff below the
standard-model value, a result strongly disfavored by current CMB observations.
Taking conservative lower bounds on N_eff and on the decoupling temperature of
the neutrinos, we derive a bound on the dark matter particle mass of m_\chi >
3-9 MeV, depending on the spin and statistics of the particle. For p-wave
annihilation, our limit on the dark matter particle mass is stronger than the
limit derived from distortions to the CMB fluctuation spectrum produced by

Displacing and Disrupting: A Dialogue on Hmong Studies and Asian American Studies
This article summarizes a roundtable discussion of scholars that took place at the Association for Asian American Studies Conference in San Francisco, 2014. Hailing from various academic disciplines, the participants explored the relationship between the emerging field of Hmong/Hmong American Studies and Asian American Studies. Questions of interest included: In what ways has Asian American Studies informed Hmong/Hmong American Studies, or failed to do so? In what ways does Hmong/Hmong American Studies enrich/challenge Asian American Studies? What are the tensions between these two fields and other related fields? How do/should the new programs in Hmong/Hmong American Studies relate to the existing Asian American Studies programs regarding curriculum, activism and/or resource allocation
Analysis Tools for Discovering Strong Parity Violation at Hadron Colliders
Several arguments suggest parity violation may be observable in high energy
strong interactions. We introduce new analysis tools for describing the
azimuthal dependence of multi-particle distributions, or "azimuthal flow."
Analysis uses the representations of the orthogonal group O(2) and dihedral
groups necessary to define parity correctly in two dimensions.
Classification finds that collective angles used in event-by-event statistics
represent inequivalent tensor observables that cannot generally be represented
by a single "reaction plane". Many new parity-violating observables exist that
have never been measured, while many new parity-conserving observables formerly
lumped together are now distinguished. We use the concept of "event shape
sorting" to suggest separating right- and left-handed events, and we discuss
the effects of transverse and longitudinal spin. The analysis tools are
statistically robust, and can be applied equally to low or high multiplicity
