Oneâpot synthesis of [2+2]âhelicateâlike macrocycle and 2+4âÎź4âoxo tetranuclear open frame complexes : Chiroptical properties and asymmetric oxidative coupling of 2ânaphthols
Synthesis of binuclear Cu(II) terminally closed [2+2]â doubleâstranded helicateâlike macrocycles 1, 1â˛,1âł, 2, 2â˛, 2âł and 2+4âÎź4âoxo tetranuclear open frame complexes 3, 3â˛, 3âł, 4, 4â˛, 4âł are established. Adapting oneâpot selfâassembly technique from simple three components systems: 1,1â˛âbinaphthylâ2,2â˛âdiamine, 4âmethylâ2,6âdiformyl phenol and cupric salts, the helicateâlike [2+2]â macrocyclic complexes 1â1âł, 2â2âł and 2+4âÎź4âoxo tetranuclear complexes 3â3âł, 4â4âł were obtained by appropriately altering the reaction condition such as temperature and subcomponent ratio. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were carried out for understanding the structural geometries, intermediates involved in the diverse formation of [2+2] and 2+4 frameworks. The single crystal Xâray structures obtained for 1â˛, 2 and 3 confirms the selfâassembly process in line with DFT. This detailed analysis tempted us to derive a plausible mechanism for this long standing challenge in the synthesis of such macrocycles using 1,1â˛âbinaphthylâ2,2â˛âdiamine (BNDA) and aromatic aldehyde. The chiroptical properties of enantiopure complexes and their catalytic applications in asymmetric oxidative coupling of 2ânaphthol to chiral 1,1ââBiâ2ânaphthol (BINOL) achieved in good yield and ee were discussed.peerReviewe
