Microscopic Description of Band Structure at Very Extended Shapes in the A ~ 110 Mass Region

Recent experiments have confirmed the existence of rotational bands in the A \~ 110 mass region with very extended shapes lying between super- and hyper-deformation. Using the projected shell model, we make a first attempt to describe quantitatively such a band structure in 108Cd. Excellent agreement is achieved in the dynamic moment of inertia J(2) calculation. This allows us to suggest the spin values for the energy levels, which are experimentally unknown. It is found that at this large deformation, the sharply down-sloping orbitals in the proton i_{13/2} subshell are responsible for the irregularity in the experimental J(2), and the wave functions of the observed states have a dominant component of two-quasiparticles from these orbitals. Measurement of transition quadrupole moments and g-factors will test these findings, and thus can provide a deeper understanding of the band structure at very extended shapes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, final version accepted by Phys. Paper presented at the 6th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, South Africa, 30 June - 2 July, 2008.Experiments are carried to investigate the interfacial morphologies of a thin film of micro magnetic drops under a constant perpendicular field. Strong dependences of the drop breakup patterns on their initial sizes and wetting conditions are observed. Three modes of well-ordered breakup instability patterns are identified for drop sizes ranged from D≈800μm to 2,200μm for a field strength of H=346Oe on a dry plate. The pattern of breaking sub-scale droplets can be categorized into three main parts: (1) a central droplet, (2) the outer fluids in forms of either an outer residual annulus or an outer array of primary subdroplets, and (3) the middle region that might evolve into a single circular array of middle subdroplets. A more complex and disorder mode IV instability is recorded for large drop sizes D≥2,300μm. Nevertheless, the central droplet is pulled apart for an even large droplet D≥2,600μm, and is referred as a new mode V instability although the topology remains features of the mode IV instability. Because of height variation along the ferrofluid surface, domination of the central droplet is significant. On the other hand, a prewetted plate leads to a nearly flat fluid surface. The breakups of sub-scale droplets are nearly evenly distributed. The sizes sub-scale droplets are weakly dependent on their initial diameters. The number of breaking sub-scale droplets N and the diameter of initial droplet D can be approximated by a correlation of N~D2 .vk201

Sleep Duration and Diabetic Kidney Disease

Aims: Abnormally short or long durations of sleep have been proposed as a risk factors for diabetes and its micro- and macro-vascular complications. However, the relationship between sleep duration and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has not been well-characterized. Thus, we aimed to examine the association of sleep duration with DKD in two Asian populations. Methods: We included 1,258 persons (Malay, n = 403; Indian, n = 855) aged 40–80 years with diabetes from a population-based cross-sectional sample from Singapore. DKD was defined by low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio ≥30 mg/g, only measured in Indian participants). Self-reported habitual sleep duration was categorized into 4 categories: very short (<5 h), short (5–6.9 h), normal (7–8 h) and long (>8 h). The associations of sleep duration with low eGFR and albuminuria were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for multiple potential confounders (including classic risk factors such as HbA1c and hypertension). Results: In total, 268 (21.3%) participants had low eGFR, and 271 (34.7% in Indians) had albuminuria. The number (%) of individuals with very short, short, normal, and long durations of sleep were 117 (9.3%), 629 (50.0%), 429 (34.1%), and 83 (6.6%), respectively. Long sleep duration was associated with a higher odds of renal insufficiency compared to normal sleep duration (OR [95% CI]: 2.31 [1.27–4.19]) on multivariable analysis. Similarly, both long and very short durations of sleep were associated with higher odds of albuminuria (OR [95%]: 2.44 [1.36, 4.38] and 2.37 [1.25, 4.50], respectively) in Indian participants (where data on albuminuria were available). Conclusions: Our study suggests that abnormally short or long durations of sleep were associated with DKD, manifesting as either a reduced eGFR or increased albuminuria. However, further longitudinal data would be required for confirmation

An autonomous multisensor in situ metrology system for enabling high dynamic range measurement of 3D surfaces on precision machine tools

Meanwhile, in-situ measurement is of prime importance when trying to maintain the position of the workpiece for further compensation processes in order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the precision machining of freeform surfaces. However, the coordinates of most of the machine tools with closed machine interfaces and control system are not accessible for users, which make it difficult to use the motion axes of the machine tool for in-situ measurement. This paper presents an autonomous multisensor in-situ metrology system for enabling the high dynamic range measurement capability of machine tools for freeform surfaces. It makes use of a designed tool path and an additional motion sensor to assist the registration of time-space data for the position estimation of a 2D laser scanner which measures the surface with a high lateral resolution and large area without the need to interface with the machine tool system. A prototype system was built and integrated into an ultra-precision polishing machine. Experimental results show that it measures freeform surfaces with high resolution, high repeatability, and large measurement range. The system not only improves the efficiency and accuracy of the precision machining process but also extends the capability of machine tools

Gene Expression Profiling of Biological Pathway Alterations by Radiation Exposure

[[abstract]]Though damage caused by radiation has been the focus of rigorous research, the mechanisms through which radiation exerts harmful effects on cells are complex and not well-understood. In particular, the influence of low dose radiation exposure on the regulation of genes and pathways remains unclear. In an attempt to investigate the molecular alterations induced by varying doses of radiation, a genome-wide expression analysis was conducted. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were collected from five participants and each sample was subjected to 0.5 Gy, 1 Gy, 2.5 Gy, and 5 Gy of cobalt 60 radiation, followed by array-based expression profiling. Gene set enrichment analysis indicated that the immune system and cancer development pathways appeared to be the major affected targets by radiation exposure. Therefore, 1 Gy radioactive exposure seemed to be a critical threshold dosage. In fact, after 1 Gy radiation exposure, expression levels of several genes including FADD, TNFRSF10B, TNFRSF8, TNFRSF10A, TNFSF10, TNFSF8, CASP1, and CASP4 that are associated with carcinogenesis and metabolic disorders showed significant alterations. Our results suggest that exposure to low-dose radiation may elicit changes in metabolic and immune pathways, potentially increasing the risk of immune dysfunctions and metabolic disorders.[[notice]]補正完畢[[incitationindex]]SCI[[incitationindex]]EI[[booktype]]電子

Electronic band structure of a Tl/Sn atomic sandwich on Si(111)

    Get PDF
A two-dimensional compound made of one monolayer of Tl and one monolayer of Sn on Si(111) has been found to have a sandwichlike structure in which the Sn layer (having the milk-stool arrangement) resides on the bulklike terminated Si(111) surface and the Tl layer (having the honeycomb-chained-trimer arrangement) is located above the Sn layer. The electronic band structure of the compound contains two spin-split surface-state bands, of which one is nonmetallic and the other is metallic. Near the Fermi level the metallic band is split with the momentum splitting Δk∥=0.037 Å−1 and energy splitting ΔEF=167 meV. The steep dispersion of the band when crossing the Fermi level corresponds to an electron velocity of ≈8.5×105 m/s, which is comparable to the value reported for graphene. The 2D Fermi contours have almost circular shape with spin texture typical for hexagonal surfaces
