Relationship Between Soil Properties and Plant Diversity in a Desert Riparian Forest in the Lower Reaches of the Tarim River, Xinjiang, China
Based on data from soil characteristics of 217 soil samples collected from 31 soil profiles that were located at eight monitoring sections in the lower reaches of the Tarim River in southern Xinjiang, we analyzed the spatial distribution of soil properties using nonparametric tests and ANOVA. Plant species diversity was analyzed based on vegetation data that were collected over several years. In addition, the study also examined the relationship between plant species diversity and soil parameters by using grey correlation analysis. The results show a significant difference (p < 0.05) in soil organic matter, total N, and total K between the top layer (0-50cm) and the deep layers (>50cm). Along the different monitoring sections, going from the upper to the lower reaches at locations of 150m away from the right riverbank of the Tarim River, the plant species diversity index (Shannon-Weiner index) has the same trend as total N. Furthermore, plant communities change from compound communities to a single community corresponding to the changes in plant species diversity-namely, from the communities composed of trees (Populus euphratica Oliv.), shrubs (Tamarix spp), and herbs to a pure Tamarix community. Grey correlation analyses indicated that significant relationships exist between plant species diversity, soil organic matter, and total N at the 0-50cm soil layer
Traditional zootherapeutic studies in India: a review
The present study aims to review the zootherapeutic practices of the different ethnic communities of India. This work is also an attempt to present a list of animals' use for medicinal purposes by different communities of India. Data were gathered from 15 published research papers of various authors on zootherapeutic studies in India from 2000 to 2007. Approximately 109 animals and their 270 uses are reported in traditional medicine in different parts of India. Of these, the highest numbers of animal species (42, 38.5%) with 50 (18.5%) uses have been reported for the treatment of Respiratory system related problems. Rheumatic and other pains are treated with 32 species (29.4%) in 34 (12.9%) uses. Gastric problems are reported to be treated with 22 (20.2%) species in 26 (9.9%) uses. The mammals constitute the highest number of animals used for medicinal purposes. 44 (40%) mammals, 24 (22%) invertebrates, 18 (17%) birds, 12 (11%) reptiles, nine (8%) fishes and two (2%) amphibians have been reported for medicinal purposes. Of the total 109 animal species reported, 76(70%) are included in IUCN red data list and 36 (33%) animal species are listed in CITES appendix I, II, and III. This work will be helpful in biodiversity conservation in India and also give a clue to investigate bio-active compound in these animal raw materials

The Nepomorpha of the Guyana Region are keyed out and described. In addition distributional, faunistical and comparative notes on the species are given.
New species and subspecies: Ochterus aeneifrons surinamensis, O. tenebrosus; Limnocoris fittkaui surinamensis; Ranatra adelomorpha; Neoplea globoidea; Buenoa amnigenopsis; Tenagobia pseudoromani from Suriname and Ranatra ornitheia from Guyana.

A temporally cyclic growth model of urban spatial morphology in China: evidence from Kunming Metropolis
Rapid urbanization and complexity of political-economic transition in China has brought about continuous and remarkable changes of urban morphology over the past decades, which were driven by a mixture of spatial, social-economic and institutional forces. Understanding such urban morphological evolution requires new mixed evidences and holistic perspectives. In this paper, it is argued that two dominant types of urban growth in China: low-density expansion and high-density infill might be driven by different forces at different stages. To interpret the processes of urban development, two easy-to-understand morphological indicators: expansion-induced investment density index” (EID) and “infill-induced investment density index” (IID) are defined to measure the investment density per unit of developed land and used to compare the morphological changes between different phases in a long period by integrating spatial and socio-economic data. The temporal variation of these indicators suggests a cyclic growth model (CGM), which means the periodic switch between low density expansion and high-density infill. Using Kunming metropolis as a case study, this paper has confirmed that its urban morphological evolution from 1950-2014 was periodically and reciprocally driven by a set of vis-à -vis dualistic dynamics, in which low-density expansion is led by pro-growth infrastructure oriented public investment, while the high-density infill is activated by collective and rational actions of individual enterprises and their economic behaviors. It is concluded that the confirmed CGM model, together with two morphological indicators, offers a new holistic perspective and method to easily and integrally interpret urban morphological evolution and accordingly has potential theoretical implications for reasonably understanding the urbanisation in China
