Improving Safety on the Road through Occupational Therapy Intervention
As the U.S. population ages, increasing the likelihood of impaired fitness-to-drive, the topic of road safety holds strong interest among numerous professionals. The field of occupational therapy (OT) affirms the importance of community mobility in supporting overall health and well-being. OT practitioners who encounter clients with questionable driving ability should refer them to driving specialists. However, the question remains what kind of interventions may help clients with cognitive decline who have the potential to return to safe driving. This project’s evidence search revealed a wide range of interventions that show promise including: classroom education (especially when augmented by on-road training), cognitive-perceptual trainings, simulator and virtual reality training, and physical exercise incorporating cognitive challenges. Because there is no definitive one-size-fits-all approach that works for everyone, approaches should be highly individualized. Throughout the process, OT practitioners should maintain an open dialogue and sensitivity with their clients
Effectiveness of Peer-Facilitated Workshops on Student Performance in Introductory Financial Accounting
There has been a need for reform in accounting education at universities so that students can better understand the accounting material and also perform better in the workplace. Prior research has been conducted on the effectiveness on student performance for methods that move away from the traditional classroom format. While these methods include laboratories, cooperative learning, and online learning modules, no research has been done to assess the effectiveness of peer-facilitated workshops on accounting students’ performance. This thesis assesses the effectiveness of peer-facilitated workshops that focus on the accounting equation on student performance in a Principles of Financial Accounting course. Students had the option of attending up to seven peer-facilitated workshops that were held outside of normal class. The workshops took place between the first and second exams. Results indicated that students who attended at least four out of the seven workshops performed significantly better than students who did not attend the workshops for Exam two. These students, however, did not exhibit the same performance for the remainder of the course exams
Using Quantum Computers for Quantum Simulation
Numerical simulation of quantum systems is crucial to further our
understanding of natural phenomena. Many systems of key interest and
importance, in areas such as superconducting materials and quantum chemistry,
are thought to be described by models which we cannot solve with sufficient
accuracy, neither analytically nor numerically with classical computers. Using
a quantum computer to simulate such quantum systems has been viewed as a key
application of quantum computation from the very beginning of the field in the
1980s. Moreover, useful results beyond the reach of classical computation are
expected to be accessible with fewer than a hundred qubits, making quantum
simulation potentially one of the earliest practical applications of quantum
computers. In this paper we survey the theoretical and experimental development
of quantum simulation using quantum computers, from the first ideas to the

Assessing the Forms and Functions of Aggression Using Self-Report: Factor Structure and Invariance of the Peer Conflict Scale in Youths
This study examined the structure of a self-report measure of the forms and functions of aggression in 855 adolescents (582 boys, 266 girls) aged 12 to 19 years recruited from high school, detained, and residential settings. The Peer Conflict Scale (PCS) is a 40-item measure that was developed to improve upon existing measures and provide an efficient, reliable, and valid assessment of four dimensions of aggression (i.e., reactive overt, reactive relational, proactive overt, and proactive relational) in youths. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that a 4-factor model represented a satisfactory solution for the data. The factor structure fit well for both boys and girls and across high school, detained, and residential samples. Internal consistency estimates were good for the 4 factors, and they showed expected associations with externalizing variables (i.e., arrest history, callous-unemotional traits, and delinquency). Reactive and proactive subtypes showed unique associations consistent with previous literature. Implications for the use of the PCS to assess aggression and inform intervention decisions in diverse samples of youths are discussed

Responses of vascular plant fine roots and associated microbial communities to whole-ecosystem warming and elevated CO2 in northern peatlands
Warming and elevated CO2 (eCO2) are expected to facilitate vascular plant encroachment in peatlands. The rhizosphere, where microbial activity is fueled by root turnover and exudates, plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycling, and will likely at least partially dictate the response of the belowground carbon cycle to climate changes. We leveraged the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment, to explore the effects of a whole-ecosystem warming gradient (+0°C to 9°C) and eCO2 on vascular plant fine roots and their associated microbes. We combined trait-based approaches with the profiling of fungal and prokaryote communities in plant roots and rhizospheres, through amplicon sequencing. Warming promoted self-reliance for resource uptake in trees and shrubs, while saprophytic fungi and putative chemoorganoheterotrophic bacteria utilizing plant-derived carbon substrates were favored in the root zone. Conversely, eCO2 promoted associations between trees and ectomycorrhizal fungi. Trees mostly associated with short-distance exploration-type fungi that preferentially use labile soil N. Additionally, eCO2 decreased the relative abundance of saprotrophs in tree roots. Our results indicate that plant fine-root trait variation is a crucial mechanism through which vascular plants in peatlands respond to climate change via their influence on microbial communities that regulate biogeochemical cycles
