Perpetuating Spadina Avenue: Conceptualizing the Creative Milieu
This thesis begins with Toronto’s Spadina Avenue. Admiration for its social and cultural past and present contrasts with its seemingly inevitable future; ethnically charged sections of the avenue will succumb to real estate pressures and be lost to new market-driven development. Focusing on the section of Spadina Avenue bound by College Street to the north and Queen Street West to the south, its central location and surrounding diversity; partially deteriorating urban fabric; history of immigrants and the working class; and demographic transitions are conditions that inform the framework for the generation of a “creative milieu” as means of perpetuating the inherent spirit of Spadina Avenue.
Charles Landry defines the “creative milieu” as a place – either a cluster of buildings, a part of a city, a city as a whole or region – that contains the necessary preconditions in terms of “hard” and “soft” infrastructure to generate a flow of ideas and inventions. To understand its greater context, this thesis examines the merits of the original “creative city” concept developed by Landry along with the implications of globalization and gentrification which affirms the vital role of the working class and their communities in the city.
The “creative milieu” can form the genesis for the “creative city”, acting as catalytic sites where creativity and culture can be expressed, explored and nurtured. This thesis presents a catalogue of proposed typologies for Spadina Avenue that consider four characteristics of a “creative milieu” – diversity, interactivity, locality, capacity – and range in scale from small to large interventions
Herba Epimedii: Anti-oxidative properties and its medical implications
Herba Epimedii is a Chinese herbal medicine with proven efficacy in treating cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis, and in improving sexual and neurological functions. This efficacy is found to be related to the potent anti-oxidative ability of Herba Epimedii and its flavonoid components, with icarrin as the main effective constituent, along with polysaccharides and vitamin C. These ingredients have been proven to be effective against oxidative-stress related pathologies (cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease and inflammation) in animal rodent models and in vitro studies. Their antioxidative properties are found to be related to an inductive effect on endogenous freeradical scavenging enzymes such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase and the inherent electron-donating ability of flavonoids. © 2010 licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.published_or_final_versio
Shaolin Dan Tian Breathing Fosters Relaxed and Attentive Mind: A Randomized Controlled Neuro-Electrophysiological Study
Neuro-electrophysiological studies on meditative breathing revealed its association with either a
relaxed or an attentive state. The present study aimed to investigate whether the Shaolin Dan
Tian Breathing (DTB) technique, which consists of the Passive and Active subtypes and can be
considered as a relaxation exercise and Qigong, would induce both relaxed and attentive states.
Twenty-two adults and 22 age-, gender- and education-matched controls received training on the
Shaolin DTB (experimental group) and the progressive muscle relaxation respectively for one
month. Eyes-closed resting EEG data before and immediately after each type of breathing were
obtained individually at baseline and after one-month training. At baseline, the EEG changes
after the Shaolin DTB between both groups were comparable. After one-month training,
participants in the experimental, but not the control, group showed enhanced temporal alpha
asymmetry (an index of relaxation and positive mood) after performing the Passive DTB for five
minutes, and enhanced intra- and inter-hemispheric theta coherence (an index of attention and
alertness) after performing the Active DTB. The present findings suggested a positive effect of
the Shaolin DTB technique on enhancing human neural activity and connectivity, which may
possibly enhance mood state and cognitive functions

Non-granulomatous Interstitial Nephritis in a Chinese Man with Sarcoidosis
Clinical renal involvement in sarcoidosis is rare and has not been previously reported in Chinese patients. We report a case of non-granulomatous interstitial nephritis that presented with acute renal failure in a Chinese man with underlying sarcoidosis. Use of prednisolone led to dramatic renal improvement and partial resolution of his asymptomatic lung parenchymal lesions. Unfortunately, the patient subsequently died of cryptococcal meningitis and episodes of nosocomial pneumonia. One should closely monitor a patient with a presumptive diagnosis of sarcoidosis after embarking on treatment since infections like tuberculosis may mimic or coexist with the disease. This is particularly important in areas where sarcoidosis is exceedingly rare
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy v. group psychoeducation for people with generalised anxiety disorder: randomised controlled trial
Background:
Research suggests that an 8-week mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) course may be effective for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).
Aims:
To compare changes in anxiety levels among participants with GAD randomly assigned to MBCT, cognitive–behavioural therapy-based psychoeducation and usual care.
Method:
In total, 182 participants with GAD were recruited (trial registration number: CUHK_CCT00267) and assigned to the three groups and followed for 5 months after baseline assessment with the two intervention groups followed for an additional 6 months. Primary outcomes were anxiety and worry levels.
Results:
Linear mixed models demonstrated significant group × time interaction (F(4,148) = 5.10, P = 0.001) effects for decreased anxiety for both the intervention groups relative to usual care. Significant group × time interaction effects were observed for worry and depressive symptoms and mental health-related quality of life for the psychoeducation group only.
Conclusions:
These results suggest that both of the interventions appear to be superior to usual care for the reduction of anxiety symptoms
Computer-aided screening of aspiration risks in dysphagia with wearable technology: a Systematic Review and meta-analysis on test accuracy
Aspiration caused by dysphagia is a prevalent problem that causes serious health consequences and even death. Traditional diagnostic instruments could induce pain, discomfort, nausea, and radiation exposure. The emergence of wearable technology with computer-aided screening might facilitate continuous or frequent assessments to prompt early and effective management. The objectives of this review are to summarize these systems to identify aspiration risks in dysphagic individuals and inquire about their accuracy. Two authors independently searched electronic databases, including CINAHL, Embase, IEEE Xplore® Digital Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (PROSPERO reference number: CRD42023408960). The risk of bias and applicability were assessed using QUADAS-2. Nine (n = 9) articles applied accelerometers and/or acoustic devices to identify aspiration risks in patients with neurodegenerative problems (e.g., dementia, Alzheimer’s disease), neurogenic problems (e.g., stroke, brain injury), in addition to some children with congenital abnormalities, using videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) as the reference standard. All studies employed a traditional machine learning approach with a feature extraction process. Support vector machine (SVM) was the most famous machine learning model used. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the classification accuracy and identify risky swallows. Nevertheless, we decided not to conclude the meta-analysis findings (pooled diagnostic odds ratio: 21.5, 95% CI, 2.7–173.6) because studies had unique methodological characteristics and major differences in the set of parameters/thresholds, in addition to the substantial heterogeneity and variations, with sensitivity levels ranging from 21.7% to 90.0% between studies. Small sample sizes could be a critical problem in existing studies (median = 34.5, range 18–449), especially for machine learning models. Only two out of the nine studies had an optimized model with sensitivity over 90%. There is a need to enlarge the sample size for better generalizability and optimize signal processing, segmentation, feature extraction, classifiers, and their combinations to improve the assessment performance.Systematic Review Registration: (https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/), identifier (CRD42023408960)
