Multicolor emission based on a N, N′—Disubstituted dihydrodibenzo [a, c] phenazine crown ether macrocycle
Dynamic fluorophore 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) affords a new platform to produce diverse emission outputs. In this paper, a novel DPAC-containing crown ether macrocycle D-6 is synthesized and characterized. Host-guest interactions of D-6 with different ammonium guests produced a variety of fluorescence with hypsochromic shifts up to 130 nm, which are found to be affected by choice of solvent or guest and host/guest stoichiometry. Formation of supramolecular complexes were confirmed by UV-vis titration, 1H NMR and HRMS spectroscopy
Domain Specialization as the Key to Make Large Language Models Disruptive: A Comprehensive Survey
Large language models (LLMs) have significantly advanced the field of natural
language processing (NLP), providing a highly useful, task-agnostic foundation
for a wide range of applications. However, directly applying LLMs to solve
sophisticated problems in specific domains meets many hurdles, caused by the
heterogeneity of domain data, the sophistication of domain knowledge, the
uniqueness of domain objectives, and the diversity of the constraints (e.g.,
various social norms, cultural conformity, religious beliefs, and ethical
standards in the domain applications). Domain specification techniques are key
to make large language models disruptive in many applications. Specifically, to
solve these hurdles, there has been a notable increase in research and
practices conducted in recent years on the domain specialization of LLMs. This
emerging field of study, with its substantial potential for impact,
necessitates a comprehensive and systematic review to better summarize and
guide ongoing work in this area. In this article, we present a comprehensive
survey on domain specification techniques for large language models, an
emerging direction critical for large language model applications. First, we
propose a systematic taxonomy that categorizes the LLM domain-specialization
techniques based on the accessibility to LLMs and summarizes the framework for
all the subcategories as well as their relations and differences to each other.
Second, we present an extensive taxonomy of critical application domains that
can benefit dramatically from specialized LLMs, discussing their practical
significance and open challenges. Last, we offer our insights into the current
research status and future trends in this area
Structure–property relation and relevance of beam theories for microtubules: a coupled molecular and continuum mechanics study
Quasi-one-dimensional microtubules (MTs) in cells enjoy high axial rigidity but large transverse flexibility due to the inter-protofilament (PF) sliding. This study aims to explore the structure–property relation for MTs and examine the relevance of the beam theories to their unique features. A molecular structural mechanics (MSM) model was used to identify the origin of the inter-PF sliding and its role in bending and vibration of MTs. The beam models were then fitted to the MSM to reveal how they cope with the distinct mechanical responses induced by the inter-PF sliding. Clear evidence showed that the inter-PF sliding is due to the soft inter-PF bonds and leads to the length-dependent bending stiffness. The Euler beam theory is found to adequately describe MT deformation when the inter-PF sliding is largely prohibited. Nevertheless, neither shear deformation nor the nonlocal effect considered in the ‘more accurate’ beam theories can fully capture the effect of the inter-PF sliding. This reflects the distinct deformation mechanisms between an MT and its equivalent continuous body
Sensibility analysis and further development for dead ship stability criteria based on local linearization method
[Objectives] The dead ship stability, which is defined as a ship losing its power and rolling after turning into beam seas, is recognized as a dangerous stability failure mode. The International Maritime Organization(IMO) and its sub-committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) are expected to finalize the second-generation intact stability criteria in 2019, while a number of sample calculations are currently required for its perfection. [Methods] In this paper, a Level 2 criterion for dead ship stability is conducted for three container ships based on the local linearization method. [Results] Ship design parameters which can influence the probability of capsizing are investigated, and it is concluded that a ship's capsizing probability may first decrease and then increase as draft increases. Besides, standard value for Level 2 criterion is proposed and several suggestions are raised for the improvement of IMO dead ship stability criteria. [Conclusions] This study has a certain value in engineering application and provides technical support for the further development of dead ship stability criteria
PCA3 rs544190G>A and prostate cancer risk in an eastern Chinese population
ABSTRACT Background: The association of prostate cancer antigen 3 (PCA3) polymorphism (SNP, rs544190G>A) with metastatic prostate cancer in European descent has been reported. Our aim of the current study was to re-validate the effect of PCA3 polymorphism on prostate cancer risk in an Eastern Chinese population and then estimate possible genetic discrepancies among population. Materials and Methods: Taqman assay was employed to determine genotype of SNP rs544190 in 1015 ethnic Han Chinese patients with prostate cancer and 1032 cancer-free controls. Simultaneously, odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for risk relationship were calculated by logistic regression models. Results: The statistically significant relationship between PCA3 rs544190G>A and higher prostate cancer risk was not found. Stratification analysis revealed that there was no remarkable association of rs544190 variant AG/AA genotype with prostate cancer risk in every subgroup, except for patients with Gleason score ≤7(3+4). Conclusion: Although the results demonstrated that SNP rs544190 was not involved in prostate cancer risk in Eastern Chinese descent, unlike in European population, these might have clinical implications on prostate cancer heterogeneity around the World. To validate these findings, well-designed studies with different ethnic populations are warranted
Toe Box Shape of Running Shoes Affects In-Shoe Foot Displacement and Deformation: A Randomized Crossover Study
Background: Long-distance running is popular but associated with a high risk of injuries, particularly toe-related injuries. Limited research has focused on preventive measures, prompting exploration into the efficacy of raised toe box running shoes. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of running shoes with raised toe boxes on preventing toe injuries caused by distance running. Methods: A randomized crossover design involved 25 male marathon runners (height: 1.70 ± 0.02 m, weight: 62.6 + 4.5 kg) wearing both raised toe box (extended by 8 mm along the vertical axis and 3 mm along the sagittal axis) and regular toe box running shoes. Ground reaction force (GRF), in-shoe displacement, and degree of toe deformation (based on the distance change between the toe and the metatarsal head) were collected. Results: Wearing raised toe box shoes resulted in a significant reduction in vertical (p = 0.001) and antero–posterior (p = 0.015) ground reaction forces during the loading phase, with a notable increase in vertical ground reaction force during the toe-off phase (p p p p p = 0.002, lateral: p p p = 0.067). Conclusions: Raised toe box running shoes offer an effective means of reducing toe injuries caused by long-distance running
Mechanically interlocked [c2]daisy chain backbone enabling advanced shape-memory polymeric materials
Abstract The incorporation of mechanically interlocked structures into polymer backbones has been shown to confer remarkable functionalities to materials. In this work, a [c2]daisy chain unit based on dibenzo-24-crown-8 is covalently embedded into the backbone of a polymer network, resulting in a synthetic material possessing remarkable shape-memory properties under thermal control. By decoupling the molecular structure into three control groups, we demonstrate the essential role of the [c2]daisy chain crosslinks in driving the shape memory function. The mechanically interlocked topology is found to be an essential element for the increase of glass transition temperature and consequent gain of shape memory function. The supramolecular host-guest interactions within the [c2]daisy chain topology not only ensure robust mechanical strength and good network stability of the polymer, but also impart the shape memory polymer with remarkable shape recovery properties and fatigue resistance ability. The incorporation of the [c2]daisy chain unit as a building block has the potential to lay the groundwork for the development of a wide range of shape-memory polymer materials
