    Coherence retrieval using trace regularization

    The mutual intensity and its equivalent phase-space representations quantify an optical field's state of coherence and are important tools in the study of light propagation and dynamics, but they can only be estimated indirectly from measurements through a process called coherence retrieval, otherwise known as phase-space tomography. As practical considerations often rule out the availability of a complete set of measurements, coherence retrieval is usually a challenging high-dimensional ill-posed inverse problem. In this paper, we propose a trace-regularized optimization model for coherence retrieval and a provably-convergent adaptive accelerated proximal gradient algorithm for solving the resulting problem. Applying our model and algorithm to both simulated and experimental data, we demonstrate an improvement in reconstruction quality over previous models as well as an increase in convergence speed compared to existing first-order methods.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in SIAM Journal on Imaging Science

    Corrosion Evaluation of Additive Manufacture Metal Alloy by Nondestructive Line-Focused Transducer

    In this study, the elastic properties of the additive manufactured and the traditional manufactured standard sample of stainless steel – grade 420 (SS420) before and after the electrochemical corrosion will be characterized by using the line-focused ultrasonic transducer system. The calculation was based on the measurement of the surface Rayleigh wave’s velocity. The result showed that the velocity of the surface wave and Young’s modulus had a negative correlation with the degree of corrosion, which means as the degree of the corrosion became severer, the velocity of the surface wave and Young’s modulus decreased. A galvanic cell to simulate the electrochemical corrosion in this test was established and a concave transducer with a motorized stage was used to emit and detect the ultrasonic waves which could be used in surface wave’s calculation. This thesis research includes four parts: 1) theoretical consideration of the surface wave propagating and the elastic constants in an isotropic material; 2) basic principles and procedures of the measurement regarding the surface Rayleigh wave and the corrosion evaluation; 3) data processing and the result of Young’s modulus variation with regards to the corrosion; 4) the conclusions about this experiment and some future expectations

    Differential metabolic responses of clam Ruditapes philippinarum to Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio splendidus challenges

    Clam Ruditapes philippinarum is one of the important marine aquaculture species in North China. However, pathogens can often cause diseases and lead to massive mortalities and economic losses of clam. In this work, we compared the metabolic responses induced by Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio splendidus challenges towards hepatopancreas of clam using NMR-based metabolomics. Metabolic responses suggested that both V anguillarum and V splendidus induced disturbances in energy metabolism and osmotic regulation, oxidative and immune stresses with different mechanisms, as indicated by correspondingly differential metabolic biomarkers (e.g., amino acids, ATP, glucose, glycogen, taurine, betaine, choline and hypotaurine) and altered mRNA expression levels of related genes including ATP synthase, ATPase, glutathione peroxidase, heat shock protein 90, defensin and lysozyme. However, V. anguillarum caused more severe oxidative and immune stresses in clam hepatopancreas than V splendidus. Our results indicated that metabolomics could be used to elucidate the biological effects of pathogens to the marine clam R. philippinarum. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.     Clay mineralogy indicates a mildly warm and humid living environment for the Miocene hominoid from the Zhaotong Basin, Yunnan, China

    Global and regional environmental changes have influenced the evolutionary processes of hominoid primates, particularly during the Miocene. Recently, a new Lufengpithecus cf. lufengensis hominoid fossil with a late Miocene age of ~6.2 Ma was discovered in the Shuitangba (STB) section of the Zhaotong Basin in Yunnan on the southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau. To understand the relationship between paleoclimate and hominoid evolution, we have studied sedimentary, clay mineralogy and geochemical proxies for the late Miocene STB section (~16 m thick; ca. 6.7–6.0 Ma). Our results show that Lufengpithecus cf. lufengensis lived in a mildly warm and humid climate in a lacustrine or swamp environment. Comparing mid to late Miocene records from hominoid sites in Yunnan, Siwalik in Pakistan, and tropical Africa we find that ecological shifts from forest to grassland in Siwalik are much later than in tropical Africa, consistent with the disappearance of hominoid fossils. However, no significant vegetation changes are found in Yunnan during the late Miocene, which we suggest is the result of uplift of the Tibetan plateau combined with the Asian monsoon geographically and climatically isolating these regions. The resultant warm and humid conditions in southeastern China offered an important refuge for Miocene hominoids

    Plant resistance to tomato yellow leaf curl virus is enhanced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Ba13 through modulation of RNA interference

    IntroductionTomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), which is a typical member of the genus Begomovirus, causes severe crop yield losses worldwide. RNA interference (RNAi) is an important antiviral defense mechanism in plants, but whether plant beneficial microbes used as biocontrol agents would modulate RNAi in defense against TYLCV remains unclear.MethodsHere, we employed whole-transcriptome, bisulfite, and small RNA sequencing to decipher the possible role of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Ba13 as a bacterial biocontrol agent against TYLCV in RNAi modulation.ResultsPotted tomato plants were exposed to whiteflies for natural viral infection 14 days after bacterial inoculation. Compared with non-inoculated controls, the abundance of TYLCV gene in the leaves of inoculated plants decreased by 70.1% at 28 days post-infection, which mirrored the pattern observed for plant disease index. The expression of the ARGONAUTE family genes (e.g., AGO3, AGO4, AGO5, and AGO7) involved in antiviral defense markedly increased by 2.44–6.73-fold following bacterial inoculation. The methylation level at CpG site 228 (in the open reading frame region of the RNA interference suppressing gene AV2) and site 461 (in the open reading frame regions of AV1 and AV2) was 183.1 and 63.0% higher in inoculated plants than in non-inoculated controls, respectively. The abundances of 10 small interfering RNAs matched to the TYLCV genome were all reduced in inoculated plants, accompanied by enhancement of photosystem and auxin response pathways.DiscussionThe results indicate that the application of Ba. amyloliquefaciens Ba13 enhances plant resistance to TYLCV through RNAi modulation by upregulating RNAi-related gene expression and enhancing viral genome methylation

    Occurrences and distribution characteristics of organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers in the sediments of the Bohai and Yellow Seas, China

    Concentrations and distribution characteristics of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface sediment samples were analyzed and discussed for the first time in the open Bohai Sea (BS) and YellowSea (YS). Three halogenated OPEs [ tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), and tris-(1,3-dichloro2- propyl) phosphate (TDCPP)] and five non-halogenated OPEs [ tri-isobutyl phosphate (TiBP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP), tripentyl phosphate (TPeP), triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) and tris-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP)] were detected in this region. The concentrations of eight OPEs in total (Sigma 8OPEs) ranged from 83 to 4552 pg g(-1) dry weight (dw). The halogenated OPEs showed higher abundances than the non-halogenated ones did, with TCEP, TCPP, and TEHP the main compounds. Generally, concentrations of OPEs in the BS were higher than those in the YS. Riverine input (mainly the Changjiang DilutedWater (CDW)) and deposition effect in the mud areas might have influenced the spatial distributions of OPEs. Correlation between OPE concentrations and total organic carbon (TOC) indicated TOC was an effective indicator for the distribution of OPEs. Inventory analysis of OPEs implied that sea sediment might not be the major reservoir of these compounds. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</p
