The Mediating Effect of Commitment on Customer Loyalty in eBrokerage: An Enhanced Investment Model

    Get PDF
Customers could switch service provider easily because of lower searching cost and identical service in online environment. Most marketing research for customer loyalty emphasizes the effect of satisfaction and switching barrier, derived from investment model. However, how satisfaction and switching barrier influence customer loyalty has been less conclusive. The possible reason is neglect of commitment. We inject the concept of commitment in relationship marketing, which consists of affective and continuous commitment, into investment model for enhancing mediating role of commitment. Empirical results gathered from online survey in virtual financial communities show that commitment is the essential mediator in cultivating customer loyalty. Besides, satisfaction and switching barrier influence loyalty by different component of commitment, affective continuous commitment respectively. Affective commitment is more important than continuous commitment. E-brokerage should pay attention to earning customersā€™ commitment for retaining customers

An Economy-wide Analysis of Impacts of WTO Tiered Formula for Tariff Reduction on Taiwan

    Get PDF
In this study we use Taiwan as a case study to provide an economy-wide analysis of impacts on Taiwan of WTO tariff reduction schemes with different combinations of thresholds and reduction rates. The model we utilized in this study is Taiwan General Equilibrium Model with a WTO module (TAIGEM-WTO, hereafter) that is a multi-sectoral computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Taiwan's economy derived from Australian ORANI model (Dixon, Parmenter, Sutton and Vincent, 1982). Simulation results show that results are more sensitive to the scheme of tariff-reduction (i.e., Category 1, 2, and 3) than the tiered levels (i.e., A, B, C, and D) and as a strategy we should pay more attention to the arguments related to the amounts of tariff-reduction. Moreover, changes in nominal average tariff rates are more sensitive and shocks to the economy are more severe when we change the tariff reduction categories rather than the tiered levels. This conclusion also applies to the tiered reduction case when only sensitive products are considered. Finally, simulations with sector's bound rate calculated using arithmetic means have bigger effects than those using import values as weights. Therefore, sector's bound rate using import values as weights would be preferred.International Relations/Trade,

Knowledge Sharing in Virtual Community: The Comparison between Contributors and Lurkers

    Get PDF
Internet-based virtual communities are growing with an unprecedented rate. Virtual communities have been viewed as platforms for sharing knowledge. The present study proposed an integrated model by investigating social capital and motivational factors that would influence the knowledge sharing attitude of members. Data were collected from 207 professional virtual community users (including 53 contributors and 154 lurkers). The results showed that trust and pro-sharing norms mediate the relationship between shared understanding and knowledge sharing attitude. Enjoy helping, commitment, and community-related outcome expectations enhance contributorsā€™ attitudes toward knowledge sharing. When lurkers perceived more reciprocity in their communities and expect more community-related outcome, they incline to sharing knowledge with others. The implications of these results are discussed

Team Quotients, Resilience, and Performance of Software Development Projects

    Get PDF
Past studies have examined actions and strategies that software project teams can take to reduce the negative impact of uncertainties, such as changing requirements. Software development project teams often have to be flexible to follow the pre-defined plans and strive to meet project goals. Sometimes uncertainty may go extreme to temporarily slow projects down and set project teams into reduced productivity. Project teams should be resilient to recover from the reduce productivity condition and move forward toward predefined goals. This study focuses on understanding the importance of team resilience for software project teams and exploring the antecedents of team resilience. Specifically, we investigate the impacts of intelligence and emotional quotient on team resilience capability, the extent to which project team can recover from the impediment and move forward. This is a research-in-progress work. A future empirical test plan has been discussed at the end

BackgroundNeonatal intensive care has changed dramatically over the past few decades and the survival of infants has generally improved in many countries. The purpose of this study was to explore the recent evolution of mortality and morbidities among very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants in southern Taiwan.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records of VLBW (birth weight <1500Ā g) infants who were admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit at a tertiary medical center in southern Taiwan from 2003 to 2010. The study period was divided into two cohorts: the first cohort of 2003ā€“2006 and the second cohort of 2007ā€“2010. Demographic profiles and complications were recorded, including the following information: sex, birth body weight (BBW), gestational age (GA), Apgar score, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy, chronic lung disease (CLD), inguinal hernia, and sepsis. The length of stay (LOS) in hospital was compared between the two cohorts.ResultsA total of 420 (212 male) VLBW infants were enrolled with 52 (12.4%) deaths. Compared to surviving infants, deceased infants had significantly lower GA, Apgar scores, and BBW. The mortality of VLBW infants remained static between the two birth cohorts, but the incidence of major morbidities generally decreased. The LOS for overall surviving infants and the proportion of LOSĀ >Ā 60 days were both reduced in the period of 2007ā€“2010. With further stratification by BBW, the major reduction of long LOS was only found in the group of BBWĀ ā‰„Ā 1000Ā g. The multivariate logistic regression model found PDA, CLD, and BBWĀ <Ā 1000Ā g were major complications to be associated with long LOS among surviving infants.ConclusionPeriodic evaluation of the mortality and morbidity of preterm infants can help to understand the changes and trends of our neonatal care. Further study using the national dataset to provide more representative information is warranted

Preparation, characterization, and application of titanium nano-tube array in dye-sensitized solar cells

The vertically orientated TiO2 nanotube array (TNA) decorated with TiO2 nano-particles was successfully fabricated by electrochemically anodizing titanium (Ti) foils followed by Ti-precursor post-treatment and annealing process. The TNA morphology characterized by SEM and TEM was found to be filled with TiO2 nano-particles interior and exterior of the TiO2 nano-tubes after titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TnB) treatment, whereas TiO2 nano-particles were only found inside of TiO2 nano-tubes upon titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) treatment. The efficiency in TNA-based DSSCs was improved by both TnB and TiCl4 treatment presumably due to the increase of dye adsorption

Examining the Antecedents of Repurchase Intention in Convenience Stores: A Perspective of Expectation-Disconfirmation Theory

    Get PDF
The density of convenience stores in Taiwan is the highest in the world. In a convenience store context, this study attempts to examine the relationship between service quality, customer satisfaction and repurchase intention, as well as the impact of customer familiarity with employees on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention. The result indicated that expectation had direct effect on service quality. The result also showed that service quality was positively related to disconfirmation. As expected, there were interrelationships among service quality, satisfaction, and repurchase intention. Moreover, customer familiarity with employees had positive, direct influence on both satisfaction and repurchase intentions

The incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism following hip fractures with or without surgery in Taiwan

AbstractBackgroundInformation on the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following hip fractures in Asia is rare. This study will investigate the epidemiology of symptomatic VTE in Taiwanese patients experiencing hip fractures. Methods and resultsWe used Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database to retrospectively identify patients (ā‰§45years) who experienced hip fractures from 1998 to 2007 and were followed up for 3months after the discharge. Logistic regression analysis determined the independent risk factors of symptomatic VTE after the fractures. We identified 134,034 patients (mean age: 76.2Ā±9.7years; female: 57.8%) who experienced hip fractures, 83.2% of whom underwent hip surgery. The overall pharmacological thromboprophylaxis rate was 2.7%. The mean length of stay was 11.3Ā±7.9days. The 3-month cumulative incidence of symptomatic VTE was 77 events per 10,000 persons. Multivariate analysis showed that previous DVT, previous PE, varicose veins, cancer, heart failure, renal insufficiency, and older age were independent risk factors of developing VTE.ConclusionsThe incidence of symptomatic VTE after hip fractures is low in Taiwan. Patients rarely received pharmacological thromboprophylaxis following hip fractures. Universal thromboprophylaxis for patients experiencing hip fractures was not necessary in Taiwan, but it should be considered in high-risk populations

Sorafenib for hepatocellular carcinoma patients beyond Milan criteria after orthotopic liver transplantation: a case control study

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is one of the most effective treatments for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the Milan criteria. However, for patients beyond these criteria, the recurrence rate is higher and the prognosis is worse. Sorafenib is the only drug showing survival benefits in advanced HCC patients; however, its role in patients beyond the Milan criteria after OLT remains unclear and requires further investigation.

Methods

As a case-control study, we retrospectively analyzed 17 Chinese patients beyond Milan criteria undergoing OLT for HCC. These patients were stratified into adjuvant (n = 5), palliative (n = 6), and control groups (n = 6).

Results

Nine of 11 patients who received sorafenib after OLT needed dose reduction due to more than grade 2 side effects. The disease-free survival rates for patients with or without adjuvant sorafenib were 100% versus 37.5% (p = 0.034) at 6 months, 66.7% versus 9.4% (p = 0.026) at 12 months, and 66.7% versus 0.0% (p = 0.011) at 18 months, respectively. The overall survival rates for patients in palliative and control groups were 66.7% versus 40.0% (p = 0.248) at 6 months, 66.7% versus 40.0% (p = 0.248) at 12 months, and 50.0% versus 20.0% (p = 0.17) at 18 months, respectively. Patients in the adjuvant group had better overall survival rates than those in the palliative and control groups (p = 0.031) at 24-month follow-up.

Conclusions

Adjuvant sorafenib could possibly extend both disease-free and overall survival for HCC patients beyond Milan criteria after OLT.</p
